For many years, I wanted to be a music video director. After graduating from high school, I moved to Los Angeles. I earned a degree in video production there. Fortune smiled upon me as I quickly worked as a production helper. I was young and ambitious, doing my best in my dream work.
One day, I worked as a volunteer at an award show. A production manager talked with me and said that I was going to be a “big fish” one day. I was praised, but frightened. I wasn’t sure whether I could bear the pressure of being a “big fish”. Not too long after the show, I was laid off from my position at the production company. I went back home to Florida to think about my next career move.
In Florida, I found a job in a financial company. The pay was good, and the work was not difficult. But a few months later, my creative spirit sent an SOS to my brain. It reminded me that I wasn’t making the best use of my talents. I didn’t have the money to make another cross-country move back to Los Angeles, but I couldn’t wait to create something.
I did some creative writing during my spare time. To motivate myself even further, I promised myself a children’s storybook. My goal didn’t end there, however. I also decided to get the book published. It was not easy, and I continued sending out my work for nearly four years. Finally my work attracted the interest of a publisher.
When I held a copy of my beautiful children’s book in my hands, I felt really happy from the bottom of my heart. I may not have become a big fish, but I did achieve a goal. Success comes from efforts. When you have something to fight for, you’re not far from success.

When does spring begin For some, it’s the second Sunday in March, when we turn our clocks forward by an hour in the United States. For others, it’s when they first realize they’ve finished dinner and it’s still light out. This year, impatient as ever for winter to end, I decided to skip my usual routine of calendar watching and see if I couldn’t do something to speed up spring’s arrival.
It’s only a three-hour flight from La Guardia (rainy, cold), New York to West Palm Beach (sunny,81 degrees, slight breeze), Florida and from there an hour’s drive to Clover Park in Port St. Lucie, the spring training home of the New York Mets, where the traffic of more than 7,000 fans descended. Here in Port St. Lucie on a Tuesday afternoon, weeks before the season’s official start, cheery fans were dressed in lightweight clothing, drinking Modelo Especial and snacking on peanuts, heckling(起哄)the players. Here, spring was already happening.
Being outdoors in the sunshine and fresh air, things do feel slower and easier. I love that baseball has long been considered America’s national pastime. A pastime is something that makes the passing of time pleasant. Isn’t that what we’re dying for in the winter months Something that makes time not just tolerable but enjoyable
By the time I left Florida, it was pouring rain and even a little chilly. How was I supposed to take springtime home with me, I wondered fiercely. It was still raining in New York when I landed. Spring isn’t just weather, of course, and it certainly makes no promises about rain. I'm trying to resist cliché (陈词滥调), to keep from saying something similar to “spring is a state of mind,” even though I wish it were.
I went looking for spring and I found it where spring breakers find it every year, already in full swing in the Sunshine State. My own official removal of woolen coats will occur on Tuesday, when spring finally arrives. But having experienced 24 hours of spring’s full pageant (盛会), my own little preseason, I feel slightly pacified. Perhaps I can be patient as spring establishes itself, and offer the season a little grace as it clicks into place.

A.Spring falls on a fixed date.
B.Spring came late this year.
C.The author was longing for spring restlessly.
D.The author was celebrating the end of winter.

A.A fast-paced world. B.Full of a joyful atmosphere.
C.The birthplace of baseball. D.Home to delicious food.
28.What does the underlined word “pacified” in the last paragraph mean
A.Puzzled. B.Disappointed. C.Curious. D.Calm.
29.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.In Search of Spring B.In Praise of Spring
C.A Trip to Florida D.A Farewell to New York

John Cruitt, 62, spent decades tracking down his third-grade teacher.
He wanted to talk with Cecile Doyle about 1958— the year his mother, who was seriously ill, passed away.
Her death came just days before Christmas. Cruitt had been expecting to go home from school and decorate the Christmas tree.
Doyle tells Cruitt at StoryCorps in Monroe, N. Y. “And you just don’t know how you’re going to go on without that person.”
When Cruitt returned to school, Doyle waited until all of the other children left the room at the end of the day, and told him that she was there if he needed her.
“Then you kissed me on the head,” Cruitt says. “And I felt that things really would be OK.”
“Well, Cruitt, I’m so glad that I could be there with you for that time,” says Doyle, 82.
Decades after his mother’s death, Cruitt began to think more and more of Doyle. He finally wrote a letter:
Dear Mrs. Doyle,
If you are not the Cecile Doyle who taught English at Emerson School in Kearny, N. J., then I’m embarrassed, and you can neglect the letter. My name is John Cruitt, and I was in your third-grade class during the 1958-1959 school year. Two days before Christmas, my mother passed away, and you told me that you were there if I needed you. I hope life has been as kind to you as you were to me.
God bless you.
John Cruitt
Doyle says his letter, which arrived in February, could not have come at a better time. Her husband, who passed away this August, was struggling with Parkinson’s disease.
“Well the funny thing is, when I finally wrote to you again after 54 years, I typed the letter —I was afraid my penmanship wasn’t going to meet your standards,” Cruitt says as Doyle laughs.
“John, what can I say —I’m just glad that we made a difference in each other’s life.”
30.Before Cruitt wrote the letter, he ________.
A.knew Doyle’s husband had passed away
B.believed Doyle was leading a happy life
C.considered it embarrassing to write to Doyle
D.was unsure whether Doyle could receive the letter
31.Doyle believed the letter ________.
A.was a gift coming late
B.came at just the right time
C.lifted her confidence greatly
D.served as a reminder of her husband
32.The underlined word “penmanship” probably means “________”.
A.pen repairer B.pen friend C.handwriting D.biography

Creating Young V&A
When the V&A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green was founded in 1872, it was East London’s first public museum. Today, we are transforming this beloved building into a new national museum of design and creativity dedicated entirely to children.
Relaunching later this year as Young V&A, the museum will be a place to imagine, play, create, debate and design. Young V&A will help children to develop abilities such as creative thinking, problem-saving ad collaboration through imaginative, hands-on gallery displays and creative programing for schools, families and community groups. How you can help
In a climate of growing inequality and reduced funding for the arts, it is vital that wed support young people’s creative development. We rely on your generous donations and are so grateful for your support. Whether you can give 25 or 25,000, all donations will help to complete this project.

第二节七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,共12.5分)
Accents in English
Accents are fascinating and usually come with kinds of information. 36 . So many people, especially actors, are interested in learning accents.
Thanks to the development of technology, various handy accesses are available for people to share and pick up accents. English actor and accent coach Sarah Valentine is an expert in teaching the tones which can change the English language. 37 .
Valentine has been working in TV since the 1990s. She appears to have found success coaching other actors to speak in a variety of dialects. 38 , TikTok is a medium to educate the masses. Valentine’s TikTok takes simple phrases, such as “I’m hungry” or “the milk smells funny”. Valentine then repeats these simple words in accents including German, Dutch, and New York. She also highlights the rich variety of dialects within the UK, including Yorkshire, Scouse, Cockney, Geordie, Welsh, and Northern Irish.
“ 39 ,” James Lantolf, a professor at Penn State, said. “Isolated (偏僻的) areas, such as New Orleans, develop different dialects. Since there is no contact between regions, entire words and languages can grow and develop independently. Social standing and education also affect the language of an individual person.” It is thought that accents have psycho-social purposes, allowing individuals to identify oneself and others as part of a group.
Everyone has an accent. A dialect coach like Valentine can help one learn to speak differently, for an acting job or for fun. 40 . Learning a second language as an adult is difficult; for much the same reason, it’s tricky to change your accent. With that in mind, watching Valentine change accents at the drop of a hat is all the more impressive.
A.In fact, all accents are worthy of pride
B.One’s birthplace can affect his accent
C.However, not all accents are worth learning
D.While much work with actors is done in one-on-one coaching
E.They can signal one’s living places, education and personality
F.On TikTok, she gives examples of simple phrases repeated in over 20 accents
G.A region’s location has a direct influence on the development of a local language

Feeling depressed or lonely can age us faster than smoking, researchers say
Feeling unhappy, depressed or lonely could speed up the ageing processes more than smoking or even certain diseases, researchers have suggested. While everyone has an age based on their date of birth - “chronological age”, they also have 56 is known as a “biological age”, based on the ageing of the body’s functions, influenced by genetics, lifestyle and other factors. Studies have previously suggested the higher the biological age, the higher the risk of various diseases, and the risk of death.
Now researchers say they have created a digital model of ageing, 57 (reveal) the importance of psychological health. “Your body and soul are connected, 58 is our main message,” said Fedor Galkin, a co-author of the study and lead scientist at the Hong Kong startup Deep Longevity.
“We demonstrate that psychological factors, such as feeling unhappy or being lonely, add up to 1.65 years to one’s biological age,” they write. While Galkin said the figure is an estimate, not least as the model assumes that different feelings like hopelessness or fearfulness are independent of each other, the study highlights that 59 fast we age is significantly associated with our psychological state.
“Taking care of your psychological health is the greatest contributor that you can have to 60 (slow) down your pace of ageing,” he said. The team also report that people who smoke 61 (predict) to be 15 months older than their non-smoking peers while living in urban areas reduces biological age 62 five months. Similarly, 63 (marry) takes about seven months off one’s biological age.
But, he said, it is unlikely isolation and loneliness are truly worse risk factors for health than smoking, while the study only looked at the data that 64 (collect) at one point in time. “The researchers did not follow up participants to show that those with psychological distress actually aged more rapidly,” he said. “It will be important in the future 65 (test)whether these predictions can be fulfilled by repeating testing over a number of years.”

The real pain for Emma always started when all the students were gathered on the track, ready to run. It wasn’t the fatigue (疲惫) that she minded but the looks others gave her. Emma was bigger for her age. On the outside, she looked big, but on the inside, she felt as small as a pea. And PE class was when she felt at her smallest.
Not all her classmates made her feel uncomfortable, though. It was mainly a group of girls and boys, bursting out in laughter every now and then, commenting on how Emma jogged.
Just one more year, Emma kept telling herself, “One more year and I’ll have graduated and won’t have to take this stupid PE class anymore.” She just wanted to survive it.
But everything changed when a new girl called Kit joined the class. You couldn’t mistake Kit. She had short, jet-black hair, bright eyes, and a long scar (伤疤) across the left side of her face. Her entrance into the classroom that day was met by dozens of curious eyes.
Although their teacher, Ms. Hardy, didn’t ask Kit for a personal introduction, upon putting her bag down on her desk, Kit rose, saying, “Hi, everyone, nice to meet you, I’m Kit. I love boxing, cartooning and fashion. You might be wondering about the scar on my face. I got it when I was young when I fell off my bike. Luckily, I didn’t get hurt more seriously. It’s now like a cool trademark of all the adventures I had as a kid.”
After Kit’s introduction, Emma simply sat there, her heart pounding and mouth wide open. How could someone who looked so different from the others be so confident Even the popular kids were sitting there in shock.

66.Everyone admires beauty, and each person has his own understanding of beauty. As for me, what’s so fascinating about beauty is being kind and genuine because people with these qualities definitely gain respect as well as a good reputation at length.
Take the experience that happened last weekend for example. That afternoon, I went to the park with my parents. On the way, a young man who was wearing designer clothes rode a bike passing by, and was admired with appreciative eyes. However, he rode so fast that he knocked an old lady down carelessly. Without stopping, he pretended not to see this and rode away. We were extremely angry with that young man. The moment I wanted to help the lady, a girl in a plain dress ran forward at once, who picked up the lady. It’s the girl’s action that was worth highly praising.
Therefore, we cannot judge a person by his appearance. If you have a kind heart, you own real beauty. Hoping everyone of us can be a person with true beauty.
67.参考答案
At lunchtime, Emma sat at her usual table when Kit walked over to her. “Mind if I join ” Kit asked politely, her bright smile lighting up the room. Emma was surprised, hardly believing such a confident girl would sit with her. As their conversation progressed, Emma was starting to share what was bothering her — her struggles with her lack of self-confidence. Kit listened attentively, saying words of encouragement now and then. Kit brought sunshine into her life.
On Friday, Emma’s feared PE class came. But this time, Kit was jogging with her. Emma wasn’t surprised to see the popular kids laughing at her as usual. “Take it easy. Just be yourself.” Kit said. Again, a wave of warmth washed over Emma. Relaxed and comfortable, she jogged together with Kit. This time Emma looked big not only on the outside, but also on the inside.
