本单元话题是“难忘的事件”（Unforgettable events）。本节课是本单元的第三节课，是一节语法课。本单元语法为过去进行时，学生需要掌握在含有该时态的句子中如何使用 when和while引导时间状语从句，并能够用过去进行时提问和回答。学生在前两个课时对这个语法项目的场景运用有了体会。本课时主要针对过去进行时的结构与表意功能，基本句式、用法，特殊用法以及when和while引导的时间状语从句的区别进行系统地讲解，并让学生通过练习，熟练掌握这个语法项目。
学完这一课，学生能够掌握：
1．词汇：have a look、icy、kid；
2．语法：过去进行时；when和while引导的时间状语从句。
复习动词-ing形式的构成；过去进行时的结构与表意功能；when和while引导的时间状语从句。
when与while的用法与区别。
新课导入
【教师活动】
（1）提出问题“Do you remember Ben’s experience in the rainstorm ”，让学生回忆上节课所学的内容，通过问答的形式与学生进行交流：
T: What was Ben’s dad doing while his mom was making sure the flashlights and radio were working
S: Ben’s dad was putting pieces of wood over the windows while his mom was making sure the flashlights and radio were working.
T: What was Ben doing when the rain began to beat heavily against the windows
S: Ben was helping his mom make dinner when the rain began to beat heavily against the windows.
T: What did Ben do when the wind was dying down at around 3:00 a.m.
S: Ben finally fell asleep when the wind was dying down at around 3:00 a.m.
（2）通过这些对话让学生回忆七年级学过的现在进行时中动词-ing形式的构成规律，并给出示例。让学生核对课前学习任务中的学习任务二。
【学生活动】在教师的指导下回忆Ben在暴风雨时的经历，并回顾动词-ing形式的构成规律，完成学习任务单中的课堂学习任务一。
新知探究
Step 1: New words and expressions
要求学生课前预习新词，教师可抽出的适当时间进行检测，确保学生掌握本节生词，为新课学习作准备。
Step 2: Pre-learning
【教师活动】让学生根据汉语提示完成句子，然后请几名学生读一读他们补全后的句子。提醒学生重点关注填空处内容的特点，然后引出本节的重点语法——过去进行时以及when和while引导的时间状语从句。
【学生活动】完成学习任务单中课堂学习任务二的第1题。
Step 3: While-learning
【教师活动】让学生观察Grammar Focus中的句子，引导他们感知过去进行时的功能结构、句式及用法，以及when和while引导的时间状语从句。
【学生活动】观察并思考，完成学习任务单中课堂学习任务二的第2题。
【教师活动】让学生分组进行探究，由学生整体总结归纳语法知识。教师最后进行整体讲解。
【学生活动】小组讨论，总结归纳语法知识，完成学习任务单中的课堂学习任务三。在教师讲解后，根据自己的实际掌握情况进行查漏补缺。
Step 4: Post-learning
【教师活动】
（1）让学生朗读4a方框中的语块。
（2）引导学生按照4a的活动要求完成4a的任务，然后全班核对答案。
（3）让学生逐一读出编写的句子，并将其翻译成汉语。
（4）让学生找出表格中哪些动作是延续性的、哪些是瞬间性的。
【学生活动】完成学习任务单中的课堂学习任务四。
【教师活动】
（1）引导学生明确4b的活动要求，然后让学生独立完成4b的任务。
（2）请一名学生朗读补全的短文，全班一起核对答案。
（3）要求学生两人一组，用“What was the writer doing when/while ... ”句式根据短文进行口语问答。例如：
What was the writer doing while his brother was listening to the radio
What was the writer doing when the radio news talked about a car accident near their home
（4）请几组学生在课堂上展示对话。
【学生活动】完成学习任务单中的课堂学习任务五。
【教师活动】
（1）将学生分成几个小组，让学生在组内进行调查并做好记录。
（2）让学生模仿4c给出的示范对话，利用调查结果进行对话练习。
（3）教师在黑板上画出表格，分别问几个学生“What were you doing at 9:00 a.m./... ”，将学生回答的核心动词原形填在表格里。
（4）利用表格信息提问其他学生“What was ... doing at 9:00 a.m. What were you doing while he ... ”
