Give fishermen a string, and they can use it to catch fish, but give it to young men from Huotong Town and they can make a lion fly. Indeed, many children growing up in the town in Ningde City, Fujian Province, might be under the impression that lions can actually fly, as they come into contact with the popular string lion dance at an early age.
From a distance, bamboo lions with colorful long hair could be seen high above a small wooden stage in Xingxian Village in mid-March, each seeming to have a life of their own. Closer up, it was possible to see that they were linked by what looked like countless long strings that were being operated by a team of young people behind the stage.
The young people made every effort during the show, sometimes using their weight to pull the strings, and other times jumping up and down to control the strings to make the lions do various fancy actions, ranging from rolling, jumping, to running one after another, and fighting for a ball.
Applause broke out from the crowd as the lions came to rest, and a group of young boys stepped out from behind the curtain.
"This is my happiest moment, getting recognition from the audience," says Chen Jihong, 24, who leads the team of around 30 members aged between 13 and 24.
Like other children in the region, Chen was first fascinated by the dance as a child when his mother took him to watch a lantern show on the day of longtaitou, or Dragon Head Raising Day. He remembers how the crowd suddenly became excited and cheered for the string lions to come out. Curiously, he pushed through the crowd to get a closer view as the lifelike lions came into sight.
Huang Zhenqiao, a senior inheritor of the tradition that was named a national intangible (非物质的) cultural heritage in 2006, says that the string lion dance dates back about 1,300 years and is one of the most attractive shows at the local lantern show on that day.

The recorder (竖笛) is a pipe-like musical instrument which has been taught in British primary schools for many generations. But now, it faces extinction, with one of the UK's top music schools reporting an 80% reduction in the number of young people playing it in the last 10 years.
The instrument's future is so worrying that the European Recorder Teachers Association is trying to bring it back to life again so it does not go the way of the lute. The ERTA argues that if the recorder was good enough for the Beatles, it has a place in modern music today.
Tom Redmond, the headmaster of Chetham's school of music in Manchester, said only three of its pupils practised the recorder, compared with 15 a decade ago. "More pupils were taking up the piano or other instruments," said Redmond. "The ones that became really popular are the ones students spend more time playing alone. With the instruments being more socially based, there has been a reduction."
Redmond also said that this problem went "beyond the recorder itself" and was a mirror of the future of music. "Like removing any plant or animal from an ecosystem (生态系统), removing the recorder has a huge chain reaction beyond just the instrument. You need these instruments to create the inspiration for music, and without that, there is less excitement for them and to learn music," he said.
Chris Orton, a recorder tutor and chair of the ERTA, is leading the fight against the instrument's extinction. He said, "The recorder is increasingly ignored by students, and yet it has a rich history and unbelievable attractions. As well as making beautiful sounds, it's an accessible instrument because it is low-cost compared to other woodwind instruments, and it's light and easy to carry."
66.What can we learn about the lute from Paragraph 2
A.It's an endangered wild animal. B.It's a newly-discovered wild animal.
C.It's a fashionable musical instrument. D.It's an out-of-date musical instrument.
67.What can we infer from Redmond's words in Paragraph 4
A.The piano is easier to learn than the recorder. B.Music education is necessary for top students.
C.Any instrument plays an important role in music. D.Nature is a rich source of inspiration for musicians.
68.What does Ort on think of the recorder
A.It needs to be improved. B.It is very difficult to play.
C.It is worth more attention. D.It is a must-choose for students.
69.What can be inferred from the text
A.The price of the recorder is going to be raised. B.The Beatles musicians used to play the recorder.
C.Students will choose to learn the recorder soon. D.80% music learners played the recorder 10 years ago.
70.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.The Recorder Is Heading for Extinction B.The Number of UK Musicians Is Falling
C.Music Is Increasingly Influencing the Youth D.Technology Brings New Life to Instruments
D
China's development in space technology is likely to modernize food preservation on Earth, with spacecraft engineers changing and reusing a barrier film (隔离薄膜), originally designed for the orbital space station, to effectively maintain the health and freshness of people's daily meals.
This flexible film that can block gases and germs, providing exceptional protection for food. The China Academy of Space Technology presented a video showing lab researchers dividing a piece of tofu into two parts and placing each in separate packages—one regular and one made of the new high-barrier film. After seven days, it was observed that the tofu stored in the regular package had gone bad, while the tofu contained within the high-barrier material remained fresh.
The new high-barrier film draws inspiration from space coating technology. The original purpose of this coating technology was to protect the equipment of the space station from atomic oxygen. In low-orbital space, sunlight can break down oxygen molecules into atomic oxygen, which can erode (腐蚀) spacecraft materials. Therefore, engineers apply a barrier coating to prevent erosion.
It is also necessary to package food and medicine to prevent the entry of water and oxygen, as they can lead to the growth of tiny living things and result in spoilage (变质).
Since 2016, the Academy has proposed using space coating technology for the development of next-generation high-barrier films. After four years of exploration, the research team has achieved significant progress and successfully established China's first high-barrier film production line and mass production line.
The high-barrier film has very strict requirements for water resistance. If a football field was covered with such a film, the amount of water that could pass through it each day would be the size of your finger.
The new high-barrier film is increasingly used for packaging expensive food. When the cost drops, the range of its application will be much greater, serving as an option to food preservation in the future, reducing or even removing the need for additives in food. This would both ensure the quality of food and so that it can be kept longer.
71.How does the author prove the advantage of the new barrier film in Paragraph 2
A.By listing figures. B.By presenting a theory. C.By quoting remarks. D.By showing an experiment.
72.What does the author try to tell us in Paragraph 3
A.Who invented the barrier film. B.Why the barrier coating was used in space.
C.Why we need to develop space technology. D.When we can make good use of the barrier film.
73.Which of the following can be inferred from the text
A.The high-barrier film is often used to cover a football field.
B.The high-barrier film can keep food fresh for at most seven days.
C.China began to make high-barrier film in large amount in 2020.
D.You must cut tofu into two parts to keep it fresh in the barrier film.
74.Why isn't the high-barrier film widely used at present
A.Its quality is not good enough. B.The production cost is too high.
C.The raw material is hard to find. D.The production time is too long.
75.In which section of a website can you find this text
A.Medicine and Food. B.Lifestyle and Film. C.Travel and Relaxation. D.Science and Technology.

M: Is there anything else you do to improve your playing
W: Sometimes I go to the gym. I eat healthy food. But the main thing is that I feel relaxed when I play.
M: Do you think classical music has helped you through some difficult time

Text 10
M: My wife and I are from France. Recently we were faced with a difficult situation while traveling by car in the mountains with our hired driver. It was going to be a long ride. Just as we began to fall asleep, the engine made a loud noise and then stopped working. The sun was just setting and the air was getting cooler. The driver insisted on going to get help and then he left. We were in a place with no houses in sight. We didn't have much food and it was getting darker. We were very worried. Suddenly, the headlights from another car appeared in the dark. A stranger got out of the car. He asked us to go with him. He had such a kind face, and we believed him. We climbed into his car. Before we left, he put a note on my car with his phone number on it. Then he drove us to a nearby village, and we met his family. They offered us local foods. Later that evening, the phone rang. It was our driver. He had kept his word and fixed my car. I will never forget the warmth we received on that day.
