Mr. Wu is showing his classmates how to make pressed flowers(押花).
Start here
Step 1: Carefully pick a few flowers in a place where you are allowed. Do not take too many! Pick them later
in the day and when the weather is fine so they’re not wet from rain.
Step 2: Open a heavy book and lay a piece of blotting paper(吸水纸)inside. Place your flowers “face”
down to keep the petals(花瓣)nice and flat. You could press some “sideways” for a different result. Then place
another piece of blotting paper on top.
Step 3: Carefully close the book and place more heavy books on top. Put them in a warm place. Check on
your flowers every few days and change the blotting paper if it’s wet. It should take about 2—4 weeks for your
flowers to fully dry.
Pressed Flower Works
Once they’re dry, you can make some amazing art from your flowers. PVA glue is the best thing to stick
them with.
◆Cool Cards
Stick pressed flowers to the cards and give them to your friends and family as presents.

Resting her phone on a stand and making the light more suitable, 49-year-old Lyu Min started her
livestreaming session — her daily job during the COVID-19 outbreak. Dressed in a qipao, a traditional Chinese
dress, Lyu started the livestreaming session from her workshop at 10 in the morning, sharing the art of making
Chinese knots with many handicraft(手工艺) lovers. Lyu, an inheritor(继承人) of the art of making Chinese knots,

Advertisements are everywhere, TV, newspapers, magazines and of course, on the Internet. Is advertisement
really necessary Billions of dollars are spent on it every year, so it must be important. After all, it’s a busy world.
You have to advertise to get people’s attention to sell products!
Not every company thinks that way, however. The NO-AD company doesn’t advertise in traditional ways. It
sells its products by word of mouth. In this way, they can save money and keep costs down, which makes their
products cheaper for customers.
“Word-of-mouth advertising” happens when one person tells another about a good experience with a product
or service. That next person then tells another friend, family member, or colleague (同事 ). And so a chain of
information is created.
Usually, advertisers talk about how good their product is. Although they say things like “Studies show that
our product is the best,” or “Everyone loves this product,” it can sound unconvincing. It’s much more believable
to hear about a product from a family member or friend who has used it and liked it. Our loved ones’ opinions are
very important to us, so we often listen to their advice about a product.
Word-of-mouth advertising has other advantages, too. It’s cost-effective (after all, it’s free) and a company
doesn’t have to create a complex business plan to do it. Here is some advice for small businesses about
word-of-mouth advertising.
● Be prepared to talk about your company at any time. You never know who you will meet. Always carry
business cards.
● Only say good things about your company. Don’t say bad things about your competition.
● Help other companies by recommending people to them. The more you help others, the more good luck
will come back to you and that’s good business.
36.Why do some companies spend lots of money on advertisements

D.Showing people how popular the product is on the Internet.
38.What does the underlined word “unconvincing” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Uncomfortable.B.Unimportant. C.Unbelievable. D.Unusual.

times in the UK within just a few months.

online about the translation. People found it hard to translate some Chinese phrases into English. One e 74

◆Framed(框架的)Flowers
Organize them on paper and frame them! Double-sided glass frames look great, too.
◆Candle Holders
Use PVA glue to stick them to the outside of empty glass jars. Then add a few layers of PVA on top. Once

Lyu, an inheritor(继承人) of the art of making Chinese knots,
which is listed as an intangible(非物质) cultural heritage, became a livestreaming host.
“Though the sales of Chinese knots have dropped a lot, I’m still confident that I can get out of the trouble
brought by the outbreak. I can make full use of this period to improve my skills and develop this traditional
handicraft online,” she said. Lyu is quite new to the world of livestreaming, having bought all the necessary
equipment(设备 ) after following her friends advice. She practises livestreaming every day and records a large
number of educational videos. As face-to-face interaction is still impractical for many, even as the outbreak has
been largely brought under control in China, she thinks livestreaming classes can meet more Chinese knot lovers’
needs to learn the handicraft.
She has integrated the anti-epidemic spirit into her works, expressing the determination( 决 心 ) and
confidence of the Chinese people to win against the COVID-19. “I love Wuhan, where I showed my works in
2019. Chinese knots are popular among many local people, and I made lots of friends there,” Lyu said. She
designed a special Chinese knot to express her thanks to the medics who were sent to support Wuhan several
months ago.
She has more than 200 followers right now. There are more and more Chinese knot lovers on her online
platform. She is using a length of colored string and determination to keep this traditional art of Chinese knots
alive online and help more people understand the culture.

38.What does the underlined word “unconvincing” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Uncomfortable.B.Unimportant. C.Unbelievable. D.Unusual.

The folk art form, kuaiban, which has a long history, can be performed by a group or a single person. With
one or two pairs of bamboo clappers — a kind of traditional Chinese musical instrument in their hands, the
performers tell stories in the local dialect (方言). These stories are usually folk tales or about social life.
Recently, Liu Jiming and Wan Yifu made and shared three short videos by using kuaiban which were viewed
about 4 million times. As a result, Liu and Wan have gained more than 1 million followers on the Internet.
They’ve created many new works to raise people’s awareness. Some of their works are about the danger of
drunken driving and food safety. They also write stories to show respect to people who make contributions, such
as traffic policemen.
According to Liu and Wan, people can understand kuaiban pieces without difficulty. The stories told kuaiban
pieces are close to people’s daily lives. Thus, they consider that it is a fun way to introduce the Chinese folk
culture through kuaiban. And what matters to them is that both young people and old people begin to know the
charm of the art form, kuaiban, which may not be paid much attention to, compared to other traditional art forms.
Folk art forms, like xiangsheng, pingshu and kuaiban, share something in common. These traditional art
forms show the beauty and value of traditional Chinese culture so they should be known by more people and get
to more areas. Luckily, through the Internet, new performers who go on sharing kuaiban pieces like Liu and Wan
are playing an active role. Hopefully these Chinese folk art forms will be alive with the times.

Thanks to proper translation, China’s cultural influence is starting to rise around the world. Form sci-fi to
wuxia to animated movies, translation bridges the language gap. In recent years, more and more translators from
both China and a 66 are working to bring Chinese stories to new audiences. Here are some popular
Chinese books and movies that have been w 67 enjoyed in the West.
The Three-Body Problem
This Hugo Award winner has changed h 68 people look at Chinese sci-fi. Its translator, Ken Liu,
contributed to this. Born in China and raised in the US, Liu can speak both Chinese and English. He also writes
sci-fi stories himself. That made him the best c 69 to translate the story. Liu didn’t translate the book word
for word. Instead, he tried to make it easier for English readers to understand. He changed the structure(结构) of
the story and m 70 its historical background to the beginning. The English version has been enjoyed by
many foreign readers, including the former US president Barack Obama.
Legends of the Condor Heroes《射雕英雄传》
Almost everyone in China knows Jin Yong and his wuxia novels. But in the West, he is not that f 71 .
One reason is that his works are hard to translate. But British translator Anna Holmwood, who began to learn
Chinese at 21, took on the challenge. When she read Legends of the Condor Heroes, she loved the wuxia world
and characters in the book and d 72 to bring the book to more people. In her translation, she made many
terms easy and natural to understand, such as “the 18 palm attacks to defeat dragons (降龙十八掌)”. When the
English version came out in 2018, it turned out to be a 73 success in translation. It was reprinted seven
times in the UK within just a few months.
Ne Zha
In 2019, when the animated movie Ne Zha went to North American theaters, there was wide discussion
online about the translation. People found it hard to translate some Chinese phrases into English. One e 74
was the Taoist spell—“jijirululing(急急如律令)”. Jerimiah Willhite, an American translator who learned Chinese
while he was in college and is a big fan of Chinese culture, m 75 to do it. He has read many classic
Chinese books, including Tao Te Ching. He translated the spell to “be quick to obey my command (指令)”. His
work has helped English speakers enjoy the movie. On the movie review website Rotten Tomatoes, Ne Zha has a
high rating (评分) of 88 percent.
