Every time your fingers touch your cell phone, they leave behind traces of chemicals. And each chemical offers clues to you and your activities. By analyzing them, scientists might be able to piece together a story about your recent life, a new study finds.
A molecule(分子)is a group of atoms. It represents the smallest amount of some chemical. Your skin is covered in molecules picked up by everything you've touched. With each new thing your skin contacts, you leave behind some small share of what it'd touched earlier.
Researchers at the University of California. San Diego(UCSD)recently analyzed such chemical leftovers on the phones of 39 volunteers. The study was led by biochemist Amina Bouslimani. To explore those remains, the UCSD team wiped the surface of each volunteer's phone with a cotton swab(药棉签). The scientists also swabbed each person's right hand.
Then the researchers compared the chemicals found on each cell phone. The scientists discovered as many of the molecules as they could. They then compared these to a database of chemicals. Pieter Dorrestein. a UCSD pharmaceutical chemist, had helped set up that database a few years earlier, which contains various substances, including spices, caffeine and medicines.
Traces of anywhere from hundreds to thousands of different molecules turned up on each phone. The molecules reflected what had been in the body, and what each person had handled before touching the phone. From all these molecules, Bouslimani says, "We could tell if a person is likely female, uses high-end cosmetics(化妆品), dyes her hair, drinks coffee, prefers beer over wine or likes spicy food."
Police already use molecular analyses to look for traces of explosives or illegal drugs. To date, Dorrestein says he's never heard of police using phone remains to narrow down behavioral clues to search for a suspect. But detectives might one day use such data to track down someone who left a phone behind at a crime scene.
24. What can we conclude about the user by analyzing the leftovers on the phone
A. Personality. B. Intelligence. C. Appearance. D. Lifestyle.
25. What was the first thing needed to be done for the study
A. Comparing different chemicals. B. Hiring volunteers with cell phones.
C. Building a database containing chemicals. D. Collecting the chemicals from phones.
26. What's the author's attitude towards the application of the research finding
A. Uninterested. B. Disappointed. C. Doubtful. D. Positive.
27. What should be the best title for the text
A. Fingers Leave Clues about You on Your Phone
B. Your Phone May be Home to Various Chemicals
C. Molecules Are Used to Search for Illegal Drugs
D. Cell Phones Will be Used in More and More Fields

Is boredom a thing of the past, like black-and-white television And, if so, is that a good thing Julie Robinson, a former teacher who now represents the Independent Association of Prep Schools, thinks that boredom is regarded as an enemy of today's children, and they are losing the ability to become thoughtful and reflective(沉思的).
"We should not fear boredom." said Julie Robinson. "Boredom is valuable to children. Quiet, reflective time is just as important as purposeful activity, " she added.
Her opinion is that constant(连续不断的)activity for a child, often the result of the dreams of parents, will lead to concerned and worrying adult. The traditional ideas that children should be constantly active could prevent the development of their imagination. So anything that improves a greater thoughtfulness is to be warmly welcomed.
Parents now feel a sense of failure when they hear their children complain about being bored. They seek an electronic devices(设备)to play games at once. And we didn't feel bored during long car journeys anymore by the impatient "Are we there yet " because all kinds of electronic devices have been taken along to avoid even a minute of boredom. So what chance do children have to allow their thoughts to wander
But it's not just children who need lessons in reflection. Adults need that, too. On my train journey to work this morning, I couldn't see a single person who wasn't using an electronic device. No one was simply looking out of the window at the beautiful views of the county side. Not time for quiet thinking, even in the quiet library. There were emails to send, texts to read, and games to play. The wider world, seemingly, didn't exist. The mobile phone has changed many things about our lives, and has developed an inability—among adults as well as children—to live in the present. What Julie Robinson regards is a cross-generational phenomenon: the fear of "inactivity". And she is right.
28. Julie Robinson thinks boredom is useful because it makes children____________.
A. find effective solutions to social problems
B. improve the ability to learn knowledge
C. have time to think and have their imagination developed
D. communicate more with their parents and friends
29. Which of the following is seen as "inactivity" according to the last paragraph
A. Sending emails on a train.
B. Playing games with friends.
C. Planning constant activity for children.
D. Looking out of the window at the beautiful views.
30. The author mentioned the train journey to show that_________.
A. the trip on a quiet train was very boring
B. the view of the countryside was beautiful
C. people had too much work to do
D. electronic devices influence people's life greatly
31. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage
A. Both adults and children like to stay alone and recall their past days.
B. People fail to leave their children enough time to think and imagine.
C. Electronic devices are always good for both children and adults.
D. Parents should tell their children how to use a mobile phone.
D
This year, people around the world are lining up to buy electric vehicles even as prices increase. Electric vehicle, EV, demand has stayed strong even as the average cost of lithiumion(锂离子)battery cells increased to an estimated $160 per kilowatt-hour in the first quarter from $105 last year. Costs rose due to supply issues, restrictions on Russian metals and investor speculation(投机).
For a smaller vehicle like the Hongguang Mini, the best-selling EV in China, the higher battery costs added almost $1, 500, equal to 30 percent of the listed price. But gasoline and diesel fuel costs have also increased since the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and experts noted that environmental concerns are also pushing more buyers to choose EVs.
Manufacturers from Tesla to SAIC-GM-Wuling, which makes the Hongguang Mini, have passed higher costs on to consumers with price increases for EVs. More may be coming. Andy Palmer, chairman of Slovak EV battery maker InoBat, said, "rising costs will have to be passed onto carmakers." But EV shoppers have so far not slowed down. Worldwide EV sales in the first quarter jumped nearly 120 percent, said the website EV-.
Venkat Srinivasan is director of the Center for Collaborative Energy Storage Science at the U.S. government's Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago. He said, "more and more people would buy EVs despite the cost of the battery and the vehicle."
This increase in battery costs could be an unusual short-term change in a situation in which improving technology and growing production have pushed costs down for almost 30 years. Industry data showed that the $105 per kilowatt hour average cost in 2021 was down nearly 99 percent from over $7,500 in 1991.
Experts say battery costs could stay high for the next year or so, but then another large drop is likely as big investments by automakers and suppliers change the balance from shortage to surplus(过剩). "It's like a bubble and for that bubble to settle down, it's going to be at least the end of 2024," said Prabhakar Patil, a former LG Chem executive.
The industry has long been awaiting the battery cell cost of $100 per kilowatt-hour, as a signal EVs were reaching a similar cost to fossil-fuel vehicles. But with gasoline prices high and consumer preferences changing, such cost considerations may no longer matter as much, experts say.
32. Why does the author mention Hongguang Mini
A. To present a fact. C. To introduce a topic.
B. To give an example. D. To make an assumption.
33. What will possibly lead to the drop in battery costs in the future
A. More EV shops. B. Production growth.
C. Enough supplies. D. Technology improvement.
34. What does the author think of the future of EVs
A. Promising. B. Unclear. C. Doubtful. D. Confusing.
35. What can be inferred from the text
A. At present demands for EVs beat supplies. B. People prefer EVs mainly because of cost.
C. EVs sell much better than fossil-fuel vehicles. D. People concern price more when buying cars.

When I was 9 years old, I received my first handmade card from a classmate, who had just moved to New Jersey. I helped him in his hard time adjusting to his new school. So he made me a card. It was a folded piece of paper from his notebook, with a picture of us he'd drawn on the front. There were only a few sentences inside. 36
Special handwritten cards take time and effort to make and feel very personal. Like photographs, cards can be stored and looked back on. You can make your own unique card with supplies you have at home. What's most important is the message you write inside. 37 But getting a handwritten card or letter can make someone who needs it feel appreciated.
The first step is to think of a person for whom you'd like to make a card. 38 There are many types: Thank-you cards, congratulation cards, holiday cards, and I'm-sorry cards which are just a few.
39 A big trip for writing a card to keep the person you're making it for in mind while you work. You can ask yourself some questions while writing: What are your favorite memories of that person What do you appreciate most about him or her Your words can be as sweet or as funny as you want. If they're personal, the message will be special.
Last, sign your name at the bottom. 40 The recipient like me will keep the card to reread sometime far in the future.
A. Don't forget to include the date.
B. Or you can buy a card from a store.
C. Now it's time to gather your thoughts.
D. This is the easiest but least rewarding part.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As he lay awake that night, Tony could hear his parents discussing his sister Alice's birthday. It was just two days away. Birthdays were always a lot of fun, even though there was no money for store-bought gifts. Nearly all the toys he and his sister had were homemade. There was nothing wrong with that, he knew. Like many families in this part, they were poor.
This birthday would be different, though. Alice was older now, and he'd seen how her eyes lit up when she saw the new doll at Honey House, a neighborhood store just down the road from their house.
How he longed for her to have it! An idea finally came to him just before he went to bed. After a quick breakfast the following morning, he placed a tin can and a piece of string in a large bag. Then he tied the bag to the handlebars of his bike and headed toward a village hill.
After a long journey, he reached his destination, the mango(芒果)forest. There were already two other boys there. Tony grabbed his bag and set to work immediately. The smaller trees had already been picked over pretty well, but he was able to find a half-dozen mangoes before noon.
When the sun was high overhead, the hard work began. Nearly all of the taller trees held ripe mangoes, but they were well beyond reach. The other boys took their fruit and went away. Tony used his pocketknife to cut a long piece of bamboo. Then he took the tin can from the bag, tied it to one end of the bamboo stick, and walked over to the base of the mango tree.
He stayed there, holding the tin can high up into the tree. His efforts were occasionally rewarded when a mango dropped into the can. After a while his neck ached from looking upward, and his arms grew sore. He kept at it, though, and by late afternoon his bag was nearly full.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
On the way back to town, Tony began to worry that the other boys might already have sold or traded their mangoes with Honey House.

The following morning, Alice walked into the kitchen and took a seat at the breakfast table.

第四部分写作(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(应用文写作,满分15分):
Possible version 1:
Dear Ryan,
I am Li Hua from Grade 2, a participant in the last continuation writing competition. Having scored only 14 for my continuation writing, I felt it unfair, so I am writing to you to state my reasons.
For my writing, I felt it totally meets the requirements put forward in the contest. To begin with, the structure of my composition is definitely clear and the plot develops reasonably, no prolixity at all. Additionally, the words and sentences used are colorful, without repeatedly using the same word. I even wrote some compound sentences to update my writing, such as attributive clause, the emphatic pattern, inverted sentence and so on. Finally, a well-known saying is used to end my article, which I think is a perfect highlight of the passage.
In a word, with the merits mentioned above, I wonder why I got such a low score. If it is convenient for you, please give me an explanation.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
Possible version 2:
Dear Ryan,
I am Li Hua from Grade 2, a participant in the last continuation writing competition. I received a score of 14 out of 25, and I believe this score is unreasonably low.
Firstly, I carefully followed the guidelines and requirements of the competition. I made sure to address the given topic and structure my writing appropriately. Secondly, I also paid attention to grammar, vocabulary, and coherence in my composition. Therefore, I believe my writing should have been evaluated more favorably.
In conclusion, I feel that my score of 14 does not accurately represent my writing abilities. I kindly request you to reconsider my score and provide me with a fair evaluation.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to your prompt response.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节(读后续写, 满分25分):
On the way back to town, Tony began to worry that the other boys might already have sold or traded their mangoes with Honey House. When finally reaching Honey House, Tony just rushed in, out of breath. The owner of the store looked at him with a curious look. On hearing Tony’s explanation, the owner opened the bag to check the mangoes. To Tony’s disappointment, they’re not enough to exchange a lovely doll. He walked out with tears rolling down his face when he met the other boys carrying bags of mangoes. Knowing Tony’s situation, they decided to gather all their mangoes to give his sister a dream present.
The following morning, Alice walked into the kitchen and took a seat at the breakfast table. When subconsciously reaching out for a glass cup, she found a card saying “Look at the sofa.” Then she surprisingly saw the doll she had been dreaming of for a long time. When Tony said “Happy birthday,” Alice couldn’t help crying and hugged him tightly. Touched by the warm atmosphere, their parents smiled with pleasure, knowing their son had grown up and reliable enough to take care of his sister. They felt very relieved.

M: Wow! Nice place! I’ve never been to this part of suburb before.
W: Thanks. This area’s called Paradise. I chose it because I could have more space here.
M: Yeah, you have an extra room!
W: I use it for work.
M: I thought you worked in an office downtown.
W: My company allows me to work two days a week at home.
M: Lucky! You’ve got a great boss and a great apartment. I’m so happy for you! Let’s celebrate! Let me take you to dinner.

W: Jason, it is said that you were on the design team at Fashion Central.
M: Yes, for about four years. I studied design at college but didn’t get any first-hand experience until I worked for Fashion Central.
W: I see. And how are you with photos
M: Well. I know how to use Photoshop.
W: What about computer programming
M: That’s no problem. I actually studied it before I got into design.
W: There`s travel involved in this job. Any problem flying to France once a month
M: No, that’s fine. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to be good at this job. I can work at weekends.

W: Good morning, sir. Can I help you
M: I’d like to check out. My name is Pitt Green. I stayed in Room 126.
W: Just a moment, please, Mr Pit. Sorry to have kept you waiting. Here`s your bill. The total is 1100 yuan.
M: 1100 yuan! Is there a mistake
W: Please check the bill carefully and see if there’s any mistake.
M: Of course. I’ll check it. The room is 150 yuan per day. I stayed for 4 days. The car is rented by the day. The change is 200 yuan per day. I used it for 2 days. I just drove to the shopping mall and the beach.
W: In any case, you’re expected to pay for extra hours and miles. I understand that you rented the car by the day, but last night you went to a concert, which means an extra charge of 100 yuan.
M: Your car charge is much higher!
Text 9
W: Hi, Tom. I was wondering if you could spare me some minutes.
M: Sure. What is it
W: I remember you toll me that developing a taste for classical music could improve one’s intelligence at least for a short while. Could you tell me more about it
M: Yes. The conclusion was drawn after studying the IQ of 100 senior high students before and after they had listened to a variety of online music.
W: I remember you mentioned Beethoven or…
M: Yes. It is quite interesting that those who listened to a Beethoven piece had a higher IQ than those who had not.
W: That`s really interesting. Does that indicate that Beethoven had a higher IQ than other people
M: I doubt it. That’s beyond the range of my research.
W: How did you carry out the tests
M: I had 50 students complete the exercise twice, after listening to a piece of Beethoven’s. I had the other 50 students listen to other music.
W: What was the performance of the students
M: The IQ improvements were so obvious that I could not even believe the results.
W: How long does the effect last
M: I am not sure, but it is less than 20 minutes.
Text 10
During my last year of school, I was given the opportunity to visit an adviser and I drove her crazy with my choices.
My first choice was a chocolate tester. I discovered that chocolate testers earn a lot of money. so I was sure I had found my dream job. However, when I found out that chocolate testers don`t just sit around eating chocolate all day, they are also involved in the marketing and promotion of the product. I finally gave it up.
Next, I thought of becoming a football referee. I had loved football from a young age, but I couldn’t play well. Anyway, it seems that referees must be able to run 2.5 miles in less than twelve minutes and they are required to take exams throughout their training. On top of that, only after many years of experience-and if they are lucky-do they get the chance to referee big professional matches. So, my dream of showing Lionel Messi a red card disappeared.
Finally, I had this perfect idea of becoming a dos stylist after I realized how much money our dog stylist was being paid. However, once, while a young girl was styling our Spotty, I noticed he tried to bite her. As you can imagine, that really put me of.
All this research made me realize I had a gift for collecting information, so I had decided to become a journalist.
