Analysis of the teaching content
This lesson is from Unit 5 of PEP English Go for it, the second semester of Grade 7. This lesson is the reading part of this unit. The topic of this unit is Animals in a zoo. The reading material of this lesson is a website article. The title of the article is Let’s save the elephants. It introduces the elephants in Thailand and the culture behind it. Hence, it serves as practice and development of reading skills, such as classifying and grouping information and other reading strategies, like using key words to search for target information.
Analysis of the students
The students of Grade 7 are familiar with and interested in the topic. When coming to the reading part of this unit, the students will have already mastered the vocabulary required to understand the text. So it won’t be a big challenge for them to learn this lesson. And most of the students have the sympathy for the endangered animals, but they may still lack of some reasoning abilities in analyzing the problem.
Teaching objectives
Figure out the problems elephants face and the solutions.
Use the reading strategies: skimming and scanning to find the target information.
Raise the awareness to love and protect wild animals.
Reflect on what people from all walks of life can do to help protect wild animals.

The structure of the text and the logic within and among paragraphs.

Leading-in Predict from the picture: Where do these elephants live Free talk about elephants: What do you know about elephants Predicting from the picture helps from students’ reading expectation, which can get students ready for the reading process.
General reading Choose the title of the text from the four options in 20 seconds. How did you get the correct answer in such a short time Find the topic sentence of each paragraph. See the main idea of each paragraph. Introduce the reading strategy: Read the first sentence of each paragraph. Topic sentence tells the main idea of a paragraph.
Importance in Thailand Para 1: Think about the questions: Are elephants important in Thailand Which sentence supports your idea The inquiry into weather elephants are important is a good example of evidence-based task. By looking for evidence students’ thinking ability will be improved.
The abilities of elephants Para 2: Classify the facts of elephants into two categories: general facts and specific details. Fill the missing information in the blanks. Find the supporting details of the facts about elephants. Classifying the information can help students have a clear idea about the information in the text. By filling in blanks, students can understand what is special about the elephants.
Problems & solutions Para 3: Read the text and answer these questions: What problems are elephants facing Why are they facing these problems How to solve these problems (the solutions) 2. Draw a mind-map of this paragraph. 1. Questions are provided as scaffolding to help students see the logic : “cause-effect-solution” 2. The mind map serves as a very good tool to help students understand the logic in the paragraph.
Further-thinking Group discussion: What can we do to protect elephants Encourage students to think from different perspectives: tourists, government... To apply what the students have learned Enhance students’ ability to express themselves better.
Post-reading Pair-work: Work in pairs, make an interview. Interview the students from Thailand, what questions do you want to ask them ... This part is designed for students to go over what they have learned. And also let students to experience the love and responsibility from the Thailand students.
Homework Level A: Design a poster to call on more people to protect the elephants. Level B: Read to find more about elephants. To arouse students’ affection to wildlife. To expand students’ knowledge elephants.
