Unit 5 Reading Beauty in Common Things
Analysis of the teaching content
The lesson is from Unit 5 of PEP English Go for it, Grade 9. It is the reading part of this unit. The title of the text is Beauty in Common Things, and it is about different forms of traditional Chinese art. The passage has a very clear structure: the first paragraph is the general introduction of traditional Chinese art, and paragraph 2 to 4 each gives specific information of one kind of traditional Chinese art. The theme of the passage is to call on more people to appreciate traditional Chinese art, see beauty in common things and hopefully make beauty out of common things.
Analysis of the students
As native Chinese people, students in Grade 9 are very familiar with and also interested in the topic. And in the previous units, they have learned some of the Chinese culture, like tea, certain traditional festivals...,etc. So they have the prior knowledge of the beauty in Chinese culture. And also they have learned some of the reading strategies in the previous units. So it won’t be a big challenge for them understand the passage and get the target information from it using proper reading strategies.

Leading-in & Predict 1. Teacher makes a paper cutting work, at the same time students guess what the teacher is cutting. 2. Think about the question: Is the red paper a very special or common thing Predict according to the title and the pictures of the text: What’s the logic of the text What do you expect to read in the passage Draw students’ attention. Introduce the topic: Beauty in common things. Form students’ reading expectation.
Analysis of the structure Choose one from the four structures: How did you find the correct answer in such a short time Introduce a common type of structure: from general to specific. Introduce the reading strategy: Read the first sentence of each paragraph.
An introduction to traditional Chinese art Read paragraph one and answer the questions: What do traditional Chinese art forms try to show Are these beautiful things made of very special materials What are these beautiful things made of By thinking about the answers, students will fully understand what traditional Chinese art is. Help students to develop an English mindset.
Sky lanterns Read and fill in the blanks: From the perspectives of these questions: Who used/ uses sky lanterns Why did/ do they use sky lanterns When did/ do they use sky lanterns Questions are provided as scaffolding to help students put the sentences in the correct order. By locating the key word and filling in blanks, students can understand what is special about the sky lanterns.
Paper-cutting Classify the information into two categories: general facts and specific details. Design the mind-map with the teacher. Classifying the information into two categories (general facts or specific details) can help students have a clear idea about the information in the text.
Chinese clay art Group-work: Discuss with group members, cooperate to draw a mind-map. Each group elect one student to present the mind-map representing the group. To apply what the students have learned Enhance students’ ability to express themselves better.
Post-reading: Brainstorming Think about the questions: Which one do you think is the easiest Which one do you think is the most difficult So is it better than the others To understand the truth of Chinese art: the beauty and love beneath it.
Homework Search for information about another kind of traditional Chinese art. Draw a mind-map of it. And introduce it next class. To expand students’ knowledge about traditional Chinese art. To experience the magnificent Chinese culture and the wisdom of ancient Chinese people
