Dear Chris,
How is everything going I’m writing to share with you one of my favourite
scientists. Recently I have learnt the stories of some amazing scientists, of whom I
admire Tu Youyou best, the first female scientist to be awarded the Nobel Prize in
China.
Born in a well-educated family in 1930, Tu had access to good education and
acquired a good knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine in college. After
graduation, she devoted herself to finding a cure for malaria patients, who suffered a
lot at that time for lack of effective medicine. After countless failures, she succeeded
in discovering qinghaosu. Tu’s spirits inspired me not to give up my dream no matter
what difficulty I may encounter.
Do you have an idol to share with me I hope to hear from you soon.
Yours,
Li Hua

第二节 读后续写(满分 25 分)
Finally his name was called. With his heart pounding wildly, he entered the office.
After giving a brief introduction, Jimmy waited for the interviewer to ask questions.
But out of Jimmy’s expectations, the interviewer just stared at him, saying nothing.
Jimmy felt the air frozen, not knowing what to do. After what seemed like a century,
the interviewer opened his month, “You should wear a dirty shirt for the interview. It
seems that you don’t take it seriously. ” Jimmy wanted to explain, but the interviewer
just signed to him to leave.
Disappointed, Jimmy left the office and unexpectedly met with Mr.
Anderson.“Young man, you failed your interview because of your dirty shirt ” Mr.
Anderson asked, with a smile on his face. When hearing the question, Jimmy nodded
his head, feeling his face burning. “Do you regret helping me ” Mr. Anderson asked
seriously. “No,” Jimmy answered firmly with a sincere expression and added he
would come to others’ help as long as he was needed. Mr. Anderson nodded
approvingly. “Congratulations, young man. You have passed the real interview.” It
turned out the old man was the General Manager of the company.

M: No. I would have died if I hadn’t given up. You know, 18 of 73 failed to complete

W: I heard in the women’s marathon event 28 of 68 competitors who started the race
failed to finish.
M: That’s true. My friend Jennifer didn’t finish it, either. Though we had received

W: John, did you go to China with your parents as planned in the summer
M: No. My father had to take a business trip in Kenya, so I went to that country with
him instead. It was a great opportunity for me because I had always wanted to see
wild animals there.
W: So did you have a great time there
M: Yes. I saw many big animals there. But I also experienced something very bad.
While I was visiting a village there, I saw some men killing an elephant.
W: What I just couldn’t believe that. Why did they do that
M: Well, the elephant was damaging their farm. The men didn’t want their farm to get
damaged.
W: That’s really sad. I do hope there’ll be safe methods to keep elephants from eating
crops.
M: Me, too. Also, I think farmers should plant new crops that require less land so that
elephants can have more land to live on. After all, farmers are taking up their land.
W:I cannot agree more.

dancer I’ve ever seen.
W: Really I didn’t think you liked her that much. I thought you liked Justin Lakeford
better.
M: I do like Justin Lakeford, but my favorite female artist is Brenda. Well, I like her
and Carrie Domino, but Brendahas a better voice than either Justin or Carrie.
W: Did you notice how Brenda and all of the other dancers on stage moved together
when they danced Their costumes were also amazing!
M: There’s no doubt about it. All of her costumes looked great! I am going to watch

W: Margaret Atwood’s book The Testaments and Bernardine Evaristo’s Girl, Woman,
Other both won the Booker Prize on October 14, 2019. The two writers will share
the$62, 800 in prize money. Each will take half of it home. The award recognizes the
best novel of the year written in English and published in Britain and Ireland.
Margaret Atwood won the prize in 2000 for her book The Blind Assassin. The
Testaments was published just one month before the award. It is the second book to
the 79-year-old Canadian’s best-selling 1985 novel, The Handmaid’s Tale. Evaristo is
the first black woman to win the prize. Her book Girl, Woman, Other tells the stories
of 12 people living in Britain. They are mainly female and black. While the Booker
Prize has been jointly awarded to two writers two times before, the rules changed in
1993 limiting the award to one person. The judges broke those rules, saying they
could not agree on a winner between the two books. The judges chose from a list of
six novels.

When Param Jaggi was five years old, he had a passion to take things apart to see what was inside. He started with toys and even broke a computer, which made his parents not too pleased. As he got older, he shifted from breaking things to building things, which greatly comforted his parents. In middle school he started working on projects in his kitchen laboratory, and his first project was making biofuels.
Although Jaggi’s parents initially thought his experiments were just a boyhood fancy, he remained determined to make a difference to the environment. Eventually, his parents came around and started supporting his dreams. Jaggi’s interest continued as he grew up, but he focused more on solving real problems, especially those related to the environment.
At 17, Jaggi went beyond his school projects and co-founded Ecoviate, a company that uses technology to solve everyday energy and environmental problems. He planned to change people’s idea that going green is expensive, by making accessible a series of affordable products that are easy to use. Through Ecoviate, he designed products that could contribute to a greener future. One of his remarkable inventions was the “CO2ube”, a device that could be attached to vehicle tailpipes to reduce carbon emissions(排放), and it’s accessible to many people at low prices. He also created a smartwatch that changed body heat into energy, which can be used to power up the watch as well as mobile phones.
Young Jaggi, now a third-grade college student studying engineering and economics, has become a famous eco-innovator and his company is developing promisingly. However, Jaggi’s vision to save the environment goes beyond creating products. He plans to launch an online platform through Ecoviate, which will encourage young students interested in science and technology to get actively involved in innovation and invention. Students can submit a science project online, and talk about the help that they need to make the project a reality.
24. What can we learn about little Jaggi

As this year’s graduates prepare to step into the workplace, many are either anxious or scared about the impact of artificial intelligence — particularly large language models such as ChatGPT — on their careers.
According to a vote by the BestColleges website, six in ten US college students worry that the use of AI in their studies is lowering the value of earning a degree. Even worse, more than half expect that increasing use of AI in the workplace will further devalue the worth of their studies to potential employers.
Fears are very common that women, who are not enough in computing and science degrees, will be kept out of the job market. Right now, company technology departments are mostly male.
But the impact of AI on employability may be quite different outside of computer programming, some employers say. The rise of AI is already creating new opportunities for students who have studied liberal subjects(文科). This is particularly true for writing-intensive subjects, such as English and history, that draw more female students than technology and require students to pull together diverse sources of information. That is because the companies that are starting to use AI to deal with customers are hiring writers to produce scripts for chatbots to use.
Once graduated, both genders also worry that AI could reshape the job market for entry level work. Early experiments in the economic and professional services industries do suggest that AI tools will change the way marketing, investment banking and legal documents are created. Those changes could free junior employees from boring work. But the more work that is turned over to AI, the fewer jobs will be needed. And most of these jobs now use an apprenticeship (学徒) way, where doing the simple work gives young employees a good place for more important work.
Some also worry that the focus on tech will hit workplace diversity efforts. “It is automation at a completely different level, which is why I’m concerned about women . . . My biggest fear is that women will fall behind again,” says Roya Rahmani, chair of Delphos International, which provides investment markets advisory services.
What can we know from the first three paragraphs
A. It may be harder for graduates to find a job.
B. It is certain that more women will lose jobs.
C. The use of AI makes a degree more valuable.
D. The impact of AI gives the graduates more hope.
29. Why do liberal arts students have new opportunities
A. The companies need to deal with customers.
B. They are good at gathering diverse information.
C. They may have an advantage of writing scripts.
D. The subjects they learn are all writing-intensive.
30. What is the concern about the job market for entry level work
A. AI will make the job market more diverse.
B. AI will transform the way some work is done.
C. AI will make the boring work more interesting.
D. AI will give more opportunities to junior employees.
31. What does Roya Rahmani worry about
A. The decrease of workplace diversity.
B. The influence of AI on women’s careers.
C. The lack of apprenticeship chances for women.
D. The application of AI in the investment markets.

When we look at a lovely baby, a puppy or a really cute kitten, many of us want to pinch (捏) or bite it. Why is that
According to a study published in the journal Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, it’s a typical experience of “cute aggression”. The experience results from the fight between the brains “emotion system” which impels (驱使) people to pinch cute things, and its “reward system”, which deals with feelings of “wanting”.
In the study, 54 participants between the ages of 18 and 40 were presented with four groups of photos. Two of the groups of photos were of cute human babies and animals and the other two were of less adorable adult humans and animals. As the participants looked at the photos, the researchers watched their brain activities.
According to the researchers, the participants reward systems were found to be active as they looked at the cute babies, and they seemed to be overwhelmed (征服的). By contrast, the reward systems of the people looking at the less cute adults were found to be inactive, and they seemed to be less impelled by their reward systems.
This suggests that cute things activate their emotion systems in such a way that people are overwhelmed by the experience of cuteness. But reward systems work against these emotions by creating the desire to protect cute things.
As Katherine Stavropoulos, the lead researcher of this study at the University of California in the US, told Science Alert, “The cute aggression is the brain’s way of bringing us back down by balancing our feelings of being overwhelmed.”
Stavropoulos compared this process of balancing to an evolutionary adaptation. Such an adaptation may have taken place to ensure that people are able to continue taking care of creatures they consider particularly cute. So, although cute babies and adorable animals may look completely helpless, their vulnerable (易受伤害的) appearance may in fact help them to survive.
According to the text, “cute aggression” refers to _______.
A. the emotion of wanting to protect cute things
B. the task of emotion system and reward system
C. the adaptation of consistently taking care of cute creatures
D. the behavior of pinching a cute baby or animal when seeing it
33. What leads to “cute aggression” according to the study
A. The need of the brain to balance all feelings.
B. The photos of cute human babies and animals.
C. The vulnerable appearance of babies or animals.
D. The battle between emotion system and reward system.
34. Which of the following statements about the study is TRUE
A. Facial expressions of the participants were observed.
B. Katherine Stavropoulos conducted this study on her own.
C. Cute babies and animals activated the participants’ brain activities.
D. The participants were divided into two groups to make a comparison.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text
A. To present findings on cute aggression.
B. To share an interesting fact with readers.
C. To persuade readers to protect cute animals.
D. To stress the significance of cute aggression.

The Chinese lunar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. Grain in Ear, the 9th solar term, begins on June 6 this year and ends on June 20. The arrival of Grain in Ear represents the ripening (成熟) of crops such as wheat. It is also a busy period for farmers. The solar terms were created thousands of years ago to guide agricultural production. 36 The following are three things you need to know about Grain in Ear.
An increase in rainfall
37 Regions in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River are about to enter the Plum Rains season. Plum Rains, often occurring during June and July, refer to the long period of continuous rainy or cloudy weather. This happens to be the time for plums to ripen, explaining the origin of its name. Plum Rains is a good period for growing rice, vegetables and fruits.
Pray for good harvest
“An Miao” is a traditional farming activity that has been practiced since the early Ming Dynasty. Every year when Grain in Ear comes, people hold the sacrificial (祭祀) ceremony to pray for good harvests in the fall. 38 The bread is used as a sacrificial offering to pray for a good harvest and people’s safety.
39
The weather is hot during the Grain in Ear period, therefore vegetables and fruits of a cool nature are recommended. The balsam pear is a classic choice. 40 It’s also said to have healing properties which are good for patients suffering from high blood pressure. Other recommendations include tomatoes, eggplant, water melon and strawberry. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine theories, they are all cool-natured and can help remove heat in the body.
Have light food
Eat fruits and vegetables with cool nature
It contains a lot of natural and nourishing water.
The culture remains useful today to guide people’s lives.
Today, this custom does not exist in many areas of China.
Rainfall increases during Grain in Ear compared to the previous eight solar terms.
People make different types of bread from wheat flour and color them with vegetable juice.

Jimmy, who has a good heart, is an automotive mechanic (修理工), but unfortunately, he lost his job a few months ago. He was caught in a dilemma (困境), wanting to find a new job but fearing applying for a new job.
One day, he gathered up all his strength and decided to attend a job interview for a position in a well-known company, whose recruitment (招聘) advertisement said it needed someone who was skilled, but more importantly, kind-hearted. His appointment was at 10 am and it was already 8:30. While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed to be interviewed, he saw an elderly man wildly kicking the tyre of his car, wearing a worried expression. Obviously there was something wrong with the car. Jimmy immediately went up to lend him a hand. To Jimmy, it was an easy job though it took some time. When Jimmy finished working on the car, the old man asked him how much he should pay for the service. Jimmy said there was no need to pay him; he just helped someone in need, and he had to rush for an interview. Then the old man said, “Well, I could take you to the office for your interview. It’s the least I could do. Please, I insist.” Jimmy agreed. When Jimmy told the old man where he would go, the old man showed a smile and said, “I know the company. By the way, young man, you can call me Anderson.”
Upon arrival, Jimmy found a long line of applicants waiting to be interviewed. Jimmy still had some grease (机油) on him after the car repair, but he did not have much time to wash it off or have a change of shirt. One by one, the applicants left the interviewer’s office with disappointed look on their faces. “With the way I look now, how could I possibly pass this interview ” he thought to himself, feeling his heart sinking.
Finally his name was called.__________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Disappointed, Jimmy left the office and unexpectedly met with Mr. Anderson.__ _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________2023-2024 学年第二学期期末六校联合调研考试
