On my twelfth birthday, I desired a shining new bicycle. However, considering our family’s financial struggle, I realized that such a bike was merely an impossible dream. Then, I decided to choose a nightstand (床头柜). It seemed like a sensible choice, as it would provide me with a safe space to store my personal things. Therefore, I requested my parents for a nightstand equipped with lockable drawers.
We visited the second-hand furniture store and chanced upon an old nightstand in a dark brown color. Although its appearance wasn’t attractive, it had drawers that could be locked. I decided to repaint it in order to make it look better.
After bringing it home, I prepared to paint the nightstand. However, as I pulled out the drawers, I found something stuck to the back of the bottom drawer. Curious and eager, I reached deep into the back and was surprised to discover a bag.
Upon opening the bag, I discovered several official-looking papers within, under which there was a wad (沓) of dollar bills! Imagine my surprise when I found such a treasure, especially on my birthday! Eagerly, I read the papers, which turned out a will. A certain elderly woman was leaving her savings to her son and grandchildren. It must have been that after her passing no one knew of the money. Her family donated the nightstand to a second-hand furniture store, and now it has found its way into my hand.
I counted the money and found it totaled over 1,000 dollars. My heart was racing with excitement. With such a large amount, I could buy the coolest bicycle. I even had enough to buy bicycles for my younger brothers. Perhaps I could even surprise my parents with a car. What a dilemma! Should I keep the money and use it to buy all kinds of things for myself and my family Or should I return it all “Somebody helps me with this!” I begged. But I knew I didn’t truly need anyone to give me the answer. I had a clear sense of right and wrong. I decided not to fail this test. It was a test of my virtue.

Mama looked up from her weaving (编织), a half-finished mat (垫子) spread across her lap. Beside her was a pile of wild-grass. In the corner were pots of dye(染料) she'd use to paint the finished mats. “Will you fetch me some water for the dyes ” Mama called.
“Of course, Mama!” Alice picked up a clay pol as she ran outside.
She didn't like mat weaving, although it was a tradition for a mother to pass on the trade to her daughter. Alice would rather be playing outdoors with her friends.
Outside, Alice called Jenny, whose house was across from hers. Both girls, with clay pots balanced on their heads, made their way to the Niger River.
When they arrived at the water, they found a huge surprise. The river was gone! In its place was a blanket of dark green leaves dotted by purple flowers——the hyacinths (水葫芦) .“Oh no!” Alice cried, “The river is gone! There's no water for drinking, cooking, or bathing! Mama won't have water to mix the dyes for her mats.” How could such a pretty plant cause such harm Alice wondered.
Some adults arrived at the riverbank. They shook their heads and then walked into the water and began pulling out hyacinths and throwing them onto the riverbank. Alice and Jenny joined them. When they'd cleared enough plants, the girls filled their pots with water.
A pile of hyacinths lay on the riverbank. What a shame to waste such pretty flowers, Alice thought. She picked some for Mama, and then the girls headed home.
Each day, they found the river covered by hyacinths as if no one had cleared the waterfront the day before. To fill their pots, they again had to pull and throw hyacinths onto the riverbank. The pile on the sand grew taller.
One day, as Alice moved an armful of dried hyacinths out of her way, she had an idea.

There was a lively young boy named Jimmy who had a bit of an anger problem. He got angry very easily. Whenever something didn’t go his way, Jimmy would shout, stamp his feet, and say some mean words to people.
For example, one day at school, Jimmy’s classmate accidentally knocked over his lunch tray (托盘). Jimmy yelled at his classmate, ignoring the tray that had fallen to the floor, and stomped (迈着重重的步子走) angrily to the corner of the canteen. Another time, his little brother borrowed one of his favorite books without asking. When Jimmy found out, he screamed at his brother, seized the book back, and threw it across the room, which made his brother cry.
Such behavior worried his parents, who wanted to help Jimmy learn to control his temper (脾气). One night, they sat him down and handed him a special notebook and a set of colorful pens. “Jimmy,” his mother said, “every time you feel angry, I want you to write about it in this notebook. Write down what happened, how you felt, and what you did.” Jimmy thought this was a strange request. He looked at the notebook and pens. “Writing about my anger ” he thought. But he agreed.
The next day, when Jimmy was at school, his friend accidentally bumped (撞) into him, causing him to drop his books. Jimmy felt the familiar increase of anger rising inside him. He was just about to shout when he remembered the notebook in his backpack. He took it out, sat down, and began to write. He wrote about the bump, how it made him feel, and what he wanted to do. By the time he finished writing, he felt much calmer.
This continued every day. At first, his notebook filled up quickly with annoying incidents. But as the days passed, the notebook saw fewer and fewer intense stories. Jimmy found that writing down his feelings helped him to control his temper. By the end of the month, Jimmy noticed he was writing in his notebook less and less.

Jake and Jullie were celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary (周年纪念日). They decided to make this particular one special. Instead of their usual dinner dates and overseas vacations, the two decided to take this particular anniversary to the next level. For this vacation, they decided to take a trip back to where they first met.
The hike was filled with memories. The two went to many of the spots they had visited on their first trip. It wasn’t until they started looking through the pictures to see which they would keep that something in the background of one of those photographs caught their eyes. There was something in the distance in the picture. It was too small to make out in detail, but it was definitely there.
Jullie wanted to find out whatever that was, so they returned to the spot. Jake had been sure that they wouldn’t find anything there, but the moment he entered the spot, he knew he’d been wrong. Just a few feet away from him and Jullie lay the whitest dog he’d ever seen in his life. Something must have been wrong with it, he thought.
That night, Jake and Jullie found themselves in their accommodation with a new roommate. Throughout the night, the dog hid in a corner. Something was definitely wrong with the dog. Its movements were slow, and no matter what they tried, it didn’t seem to respond.
The next day, Jullie suggested they take the dog to a vet (兽医) and Jake agreed. On getting to the vet’s, they were in for another surprise. The vet hadn’t even examined the creature for one minute before he turned to them with an amused look on his face. “Didn’t you say you found a dog ” he asked. “Yes,” Jake replied. “Well, I’d love to see the dog, but what you’ve found in the woods is not a dog. It’s actually a fox.”

47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was shy when I was ten, and most of the time I was afraid of talking to people around. But then one day, one single ride on a school bus changed all that.
The school bus that day was crowded, hot and smelly. The windows were all rolled up — the bus driver’s orders — it was simply raining too hard to have them down. I sat alone as usual, speaking to no one.
The bus stopped, waiting for an accident to clear. As I sat quietly, I saw a very small and thin cat across the street- on the other side of the road. Poor cat, I thought. He was all wet and didn’t seem to know where to go to get out of the rain. I wanted to go to get the cat, but I knew that the bus driver, Mrs Foster, would never allow me to get off the bus. It was against the rules to even stand up, so I knew that I would be in big trouble for trying to rescue a cat across a busy, rainy street.
My window became unclear again, and when I wiped (擦) the window clear, I could see that the cat was now struggling in what seemed to be a rushing, dirty river. He swallowed (吞) water and took quick deep breaths as he fought the current with all of his strength.
My heart was racing. Tears were rolling down my cheeks. I felt like I was drowning (淹死) along with the little cat. I wanted to rush off the bus without asking permission, pull the cat from the water, and cover him with my warm jacket. But I also pictured getting into trouble before the cat could be saved. And I imagined the other kids would laugh at me.
The bus began to move forward, and the traffic was finally moving. The cat’s eyes locked onto mine. He was begging for help. I looked around, but no one else seemed to have noticed. The weight of hopelessness surrounded me.

67.
I asked my family to come to my bedroom and showed them what I’d found. Eyes caught by the wad of dollar bills at once, they stood there, frozen with shock and open-mouthed. I told them of my intention to return the entire sum, and without hesitation, they all supported me. We then sought help from the owner of the second-hand furniture store. By looking through the donation records, we spotted the son’s telephone number. We immediately reached out to him, informed him of the will and the money, and made an appointment with him.
A few days later, the old lady’s son came to my house with his wife. Tears welled up in the man’s eyes when he saw the money and the papers, which brought back his memories about his mother. The couple expressed their gratitude to us, saying that they were in trouble and that my act of honesty came as a timely help, not only offering them a ray of hope but also strengthening their faith. No new bicycle could ever compare to the excitement I experienced on that day, as I had finally passed a significant test of virtue.

67.Carrying the plants under her arm, she ran home. “Mama, will you teach me to weave ” Alice asked breathlessly. Surprised, Mama nodded, wondering what had sparked her daughter’s sudden interest in mat weaving. Alice explained her idea, “We could use the hyacinths to make mats instead of wild grass. They’re abundant, and we could turn the problem into an opportunity.” Mama listened intently, her eyes lighting up as she understood Alice’s plan. Together, they started experimenting with the hyacinths, trying different weaving techniques and dyeing methods to create unique patterns and designs.
So Mama and Alice taught Jenny, and they also taught other neighbors. Word spread quickly, and soon, the entire community was involved in turning the invasive hyacinths into beautiful, functional mats. The women gathered at the riverbank, working together to clear the waterway while bonding over their shared craft. 参考范文:
Jake and Jullie looked at each other in disbelief. The vet seemed to read their thoughts as he explained that while it was indeed a fox, it had likely been affected by some sort of poisoning, which explained its strange behavior. He confirmed them that with the right treatment, the fox could recover soon and that it would be best if the fox could stay at the clinic for a few days. Feeling a mix of relief and concern, they agreed to the necessary treatments.
Over the next few days, they visited the vet regularly to see the fox. Each time, they were greeted with news of improvement. Finally, the day came when the fox was well enough to be released back into the wild. As the fox rushed away into the woods, they knew that their anniversary trip would be one they would never forget. It had been a journey filled with surprises and challenges, but in the end, it had brought them closer to each other and to the natural world around them.

I couldn’t sit there, seeing him dying. There was no room for shyness and fear. I stood up, directly disobeying the bus driver. “Mrs Foster!” I cried. “There’s a cat in the water. If we don’t help him, he’ll drown.” I held out a shaking hand and pointed. The bus driver, to my amazement, did not shout at me. Nor did the other kids laugh at me. Instead, Mrs Foster pulled the bus into the side of the busy road. She told everyone on board the bus to remain seated and then rushed out into the traffic and rain.
Mrs Foster came back and handed me the poor little cat. He was trembling with cold and fear. I tried to dry him up. “I’ll help you,” the girl sitting in the front seat whispered to me. “Me too,” came another voice, then another and another. Together, we kept the poor little thing warm and dry. During the course, I was forced to talk to my classmates. From that day on, to my surprise, I slowly gained more confidence in myself and made friends with some of the kids who had helped me. By helping a cat, I totally changed and was not that shy like before.
