Helen Keller Dies at 88
Helen Keller, the well- known writer and educator, died yesterday at the age of 88. Helen Keller was a model for people around the world.
Helen was born in 1880 in the United States. When she was nineteen months old, Helen fell ill. She had a high fever that made her blind and deaf. Before her illness, Helen was a bright and happy girl. After she lost her ability to see and hear, she became difficult and wild. She often shouted and cried.
In 1887, a young teacher named Anne Sullivan, began to help Helen. She spelled words on Helen's hand with her fingers. At first, the words didn't mean anything to Helen. Then, one day, while Helen was playing in some water, Anne spelled W A T E R on Helen′s hand. Suddenly, Helen understood. That day, she learned many more words: mother, father, sister and teacher. Anne was filled with pride.
As Helen grew older, she made a lot of progress and learned to read. She had special books with letters that she could feel with her fingers. She also learned to write and even speak. When Helen studied at university, Anne sat beside her. She listened to the professors' words and spelled them on Helen's hand.
After Helen finished university, she visited many countries. She spoke about her life. She was very famous for her courage and hard work. She did her best to help others in the community who were deaf or blind. She tried to live her life without any regret.
She will be greatly missed.

Helen Keller is a well known writer and educator.
When she was nineteen months old,she had a fever that made her blind and deaf.

1. blind
作形容词,意为“失明的、瞎的、盲目的”,在句中作表语或定语。另,the blind表示“盲人”,是集体名词。

3. Helen Keller, the well-known writer and educator, died yesterday at the age of 88. 海伦·凯勒,著名的作家和教育家,昨天去世了,享年88岁。
句中的at the age of 意为“在……岁时”,后加基数词的单数形式,用来表示年龄,可以与“when + 主语 + be + 年龄”替换。
e.g. He began to learn the accordion at the age of four. = He began to learn the accordion when he was four years old.他四岁时开始学手风琴。
【拓展】类似的短语还有“in one’s + 基数词复数形式”,意思是“在……多岁时”。
e.g. Mr. Wang went to America in his thirties.
王先生在他30多岁时去了美国。
4. Before her illness, Helen was a bright and happy girl.
在得病之前,海伦是个聪明快乐的孩子。
before her illness是介词短语,意为“在生病之前”,在句中作状语。我们可以用时间状语从句Before she was ill替换它。这种介词短语作状语的句式可用从句进行替换。

=She didn’t come to school because she was ill.

=Nothing can live if there is no air or water.

Stephen Hawking was born on January 8, 1942 in Oxford, England. He is a famous mathematician(数学家) and theoretical physicist(理论物理学家). Stephen Hawking was afflicted with ALS(卢伽雷氏症)when he was 21 years old.
He was informed that he would die within 3 to 5 years.But fortunately,he overcame the difficulties with disabilities and is still alive now. Zhang Haidi was born on September 16,1955 in Jinan. When she was 5 years old,she was ill.She became a paraplegic (截瘫病人).She finished learning primary,secondary and university study by herself. She also studied medicine and helped people. In 1983,Zhang Haidi won two titles:one is “the 1980s New Lei Feng”, and the other is “the Contemporary Paul”.
Huang Yangguang was born in 1977 in Guang Xi. At the age of 5,he lost his arms because of touching high voltage(高压).With amazing perseverance(毅力),he not only learned to live with his feet,but also learned to write and paint. His artistic talent was targeted by China Disabled Art Troupe. He became a professional dancer.
