M: Right, we need to get this place tidy before Mom gets home or she will go crazy. You wash the dishes and I will clean the floor.
W: OK. You’d better wipe the table as well.
(Text 2)
M: Why didn’t we discuss the new order at our last meeting
W: It was too late to discuss it at the December meeting. I’ve carried it forward to the January meeting.
M: OK, so we should have a decision in time for the February meeting.
(Text 3)
M: Eek, you are blinding me. Turn that light away.
W: Sorry, I forgot how powerful it is.
M: It’s OK. It was just a shock, stepping out of darkness into that.
(Text 4)

(Text 6)
Good morning, William. I wanted to wish you a happy Lunar New Year. What time is it there
M:Thanks, Mom. It’s 9:00 a, m. I wish I could be there to join the family celebration.
W:Well, we still have some lucky money for you. Can I send it on WeChat
M:That’s inconvenient to use that here. Can you send it to my US account
W:I’d love to give you a red envelope as usual, but that’ll work, instead.
M: Thanks, Mom. I still have school these weeks. Unfortunately, I won’t have much time off.
W:I’m sorry. We’ll call you from your grandma’s house when we get there!
(Text 7)
W: Did you know it is more common for young people to take taxis and public transportation than to own a car.
M: I saw that this morning in the newspaper as well.
W: I guess it’s because income levels have really dropped since the last decade. Can you imagine taking a bus everywhere
M: Traffic has gotten so bad in the city. Since last year, it’s been nearly impossible to park anywhere. That must have led to the fact that nobody is buying cars. Also, people can order taxis on their phones now—it’s so convenient.
W: But when you are driving, you feel so free. There are so many places a bus can’t take you to.
M: Well, I haven’t had a car for six months till now and have never looked back. Getting around has not gotten any harder, either by bus or taxi.
W: Don’t you have to wait a long time when getting a taxi
M: No way. These days they come so fast. The last time I had to wait more than 10 minutes was over a month ago.
(Text 8)
M: So, Lisa, what makes you believe that you’re the best person for the job
W: Well, I have five years of experience in a similar position at another company.
M: And why is it you are looking to leave that company
W: Well, the pay is better, but I’m looking for a place where I can grow.
M: And you think that is with us
W: Yes. One of my friends works for you. She told me about the role. She’s always talking about how the company supports her in learning new skills and pushing her to advance.
M: We do have a skills training school and we expect our employees to try and better themselves.
W: Well, I’m definitely eager to learn.
M: We also offer flexible working hours if that suits.
W: It would. We have two girls aged three and four.
M: Lovely. We like to think of ourselves as a family, so as long as you do the work, we’re happy for you to set your own schedule.
W:That sounds perfect,
(Text 9)
M:Hi. My roommate wants to get a dog but I have never owned one before. Where can I learn how to take care of a dog
W:You might try volunteering at a local animal shelter.
M:Oh How will that help me
W:It will teach you how to properly feed, exercise and clean up after a dog. You get to work with abandoned animals, helping them become used to human beings so they can find new homes.
M:Is working at a shelter expensive
W:No, other than maybe buying some clothes you can get dirty. Cleaning-up can be messy and smelly.
M: What is the best part about working at a shelter from your experience
W:You get to interact with dogs and cats, while cleaning their cages. You get to give them love and attention, and they will give you far more of both than you give them.
M:Is there anything you regret about volunteering at a shelter
W:Only that I am unable to adopt every animal. I learned a lot and enjoyed it.
M:Thank you for the advice. I will look into helping a shelter near me.

Jimmy Kimmel Live is an American late-night talk show. It can be seen five nights a week on the ABC channel. There’re some other nightly talk shows that are very popular at the moment, for example, NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Conan on the TBS network. The hosts of those shows are some of the most famous figures in show business. However, Kimmel has been known to start crying on the show when he talks about what he cares about, and he has become especially famous after Donald Trump became president. All late-night talk shows tend to follow the same timing: there is an opening speech by the host, followed by a special comedy performance done with a partner. Then there is a series of interviews with other famous people, and a musical performance comes at the end. Kimmel has been so successful at his show that he was asked to host the Oscars for the last two years. In his early career, Kimmel worked at a radio station in Los Angeles, which helped him practice his comedy. Jimmy Kimmel Live! is one of the only shows in America that are loved by both young people and older generations.树德中学高2023级高一下学期期末考试英语试题

Birds gained the ability to fly about 150 million years ago, which was a major event in animal history. For a long time, though, scientists have not fully understood how that change happened. A new study may cast light on the answer. A team of researchers found that birds evolved to fly due to changes in the part of the brain called the cerebellum (小脑), which is responsible for motor control and physical movement.
For the study, scientists from Stony Brook University in New York and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Maryland compared PET scans of pigeons to dinosaur fossils . Unlike an X-ray, which shows the body’s structure, PET scans create images of the body at work. With the PET scans, the team tracked the brain activity of modern pigeons to see whether it was different when the birds were at rest and right after they flew for 10 minutes. They scanned eight birds and looked at 26 parts of the brain. Only the cerebellum showed significant changes in activity levels before and after flying for all the birds.
These findings indicated that the ability to fly is connected to the cerebellum. To determine exactly how, the research team needed to figure out what the cerebellum looked like in creatures that were alive around the time birds began to fly. They studied a group of bird-like dinosaurs, including a winged species called Archaeopteryx, which had started to develop the brain conditions needed for flight.
The researchers couldn’t look at the actual brains because those disappeared long ago. But they could look at the dinosaurs’ skulls (颅骨), which once held the brains and have been found in fossil form. The researchers studied the inside of the skulls, which showed the size and shape of the creatures’ brains.
In the dinosaurs that were developing the ability to fly, the team saw a significant increase in the size of the cerebellum. They also noted signs of increased brain complexity, like folds in the brain tissue. These findings confirmed a connection between flying and changes to the cerebellum.
24. What might the new study reveal in paragraph 1
A. What transformed birds’ brains. B. How brain controls body movement.
C. What made birds evolve to fly. D. How birds influenced animal history.
25. What can we conclude from the PET scans
A. The body structure of birds has evolved a lot.
B. 26 parts of the brain displayed signs of change.
C Brain activity remained unchanged throughout.
D. The cerebellum holds the key to birds’ flying ability.
26. How did the scientists confirm the connection between flying and the cerebellum
A. By unearthing more brain fossils. B. By scanning brains of Archaeopteryx.
C. By studying structures of winged species. D. By comparing sizes and shapes of brains.
27. Which would be the best title for the text
A. Bird brains came before birds B. Archaeopteryx, the first flying dinosaur
C. PET scans reveal birds’ secrets D. Cerebellum, the key to animal evolution
C
At my first lesson in Chinese calligraphy, my teacher told me plainly: “Now I will teach you how to write your name. And to make it beautiful.” I felt my breath catch. I was curious.
Growing up in Singapore, I had an unusual relationship with my Chinese name. My parents are ethnically Chinese, so they asked fortune tellers to decide my name, aiming for maximum luck. As a result, I ended up with a nonsense and embarrassing name: Chen Yiwen, meaning, roughly, “old”, “barley (薏米)” and “warm”.
When I arrived in America for college at 18, I put on an American accent and abandoned my Chinese name. When I moved to Hong Kong in 2021, after 14 years in the States, I decided to learn calligraphy. Why not get back in touch with my heritage I thought.
In calligraphy, the idea is to copy the old masters’ techniques, thereby refining your own. Every week, though, my teacher would give uncomfortably on-the-nose assessments of my person. “You need to be braver,” he once observed. “Have confidence. Try to produce a bold stroke(笔画).” For years, I had prided myself on presenting an image of confidence, but my writing betrayed me.
I was trying to make sense of this practice. You must visualize the word as it is to be written and leave a trace of yourself in it. As a bodily practice, calligraphy could go beyond its own cultural restrictions. Could it help me go beyond mine My teacher once said to me, “When you look at the word, you see the body. Though a word on the page is two-dimensional, it contains multitudes, conveying the force you’ve applied, the energy of your grip(握笔), the arch of your spine.” I had
been learning calligraphy to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a return to myself. Now I have sensed that the pleasure out of calligraphy allows me to know myself more fully.
During a recent lesson, my teacher pointed at the word I had just finished, telling me: “This word is much better. I can see the choices you made, your calculations, your flow. Trust yourself. This word is yours.” He might as well have said, “This word is you.”
28. What did the author initially think of her name “Chen Yiwen”
A. It was lucky so she gladly accepted it.
B. She felt proud of its symbolic meaning.
C. She understood the intention but still disliked it.
D. Its strange pronunciation made her embarrassed.
29. The author decided to learn calligraphy to ______.
A. pick up a new hobby B. reconnect with her origin
C. gain insights into a new culture D. fit in with local community
30. From the teacher’s words, the author learns that calligraphy ______.
A. reflects the creator’s spirits B. comes from creative energy
C. requires different techniques D. depends on continuous practice
31. What does the author intend to tell us
A. Appreciate what our culture offers. B. Find beauty from your inner self.
C. A great teacher leads you to truth. D. We are the sum of what we create.
D
People have wondered for a long time how their personalities and behaviors are formed. It’s not easy to explain why one person is intelligent and another is not, or why one is cooperative and another is competitive.
Social scientists are of course, extremely interested in these types of questions. They want to explain why we possess certain characteristics and exhibit certain behaviors. There are no clear answers yet, but two distinct schools of thought on the matter have developed. As one might expect, the two approaches are very different from one another, and there is a great deal of debate between proponents (倡导者) of each theory. The controversy is often conveniently referred to as “nature/nurture”.
Those who support the “nature” side of the conflict believe that our personalities and behavior patterns are largely determined by biological and genetic factors. That our environment has little, if anything to do with our abilities, characteristics, and behavior is central to this theory. Taken to an extreme, this theory maintains that our behavior is predetermined to such a great degree that we are almost completely governed by our instincts.
Proponents of the “nurture” theory, or, as they are often called, behaviorists, claim that our environment is more important than our biologically based instincts in determining how we will act. A behaviorist, B.E. Skinner, sees humans as beings whose behavior is almost completely shaped by their surroundings. The behaviorists’ view of the human being is quite mechanistic; they maintain that, like machines, humans respond to environmental stimuli as the basis of their behavior.
The social and political implications of these two theories are profound. In the United States, for example, blacks often score below whites on standardized intelligence tests. This leads some “nature” proponents to conclude that blacks are genetically inferior to whites. Behaviorists, in contrast, say that the differences in scores are due to the fact that blacks are often deprived of many of the educational and other environmental advantages that whites enjoy, and that, as a result, they do not develop the same responses that whites do.
Neither of these theories can yet fully explain human behavior. In fact, it is quite likely that the key to our behavior lies somewhere between these two extremes. That the controversy will continue for a long time is certain.
32. What will the proponents of the “nurture” theory agree with
A. Peter loves talking to strangers because he is friendly.
B. Peter loves maths because his father is a maths professor.
C. Peter loves detective stories because he enjoys suspense and thrill.
D. Peter loves tea because his mother gave it to him since childhood.
33 The underlined word “mechanistic” in paragraph 4 means .
A. Flexible B. rigid C. common D. new
34. Why did the author cite the blacks in the US as an example
A. He wanted to show how the theories have deeply affected the society.
B. He tried to prove that both theories need further discussion and research.
C. He intended to demonstrate why the blacks need more education and support.
D. He attempted to introduce the result of intelligence tests from blacks and whites.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To introduce some theories. B. To explain a social issue.
C. To solve a racial problem. D. To give further suggestions.

Perseverance isn’t easy. But before you blame your lack of willpower, consider this: Building mental strength is similar to building physical strength. In just a few minutes each day, you can train your brain to think differently, manage your emotions, and behave productively. 36
37 Think about three things you are grateful for in your life. It could be as simple as the clean water that you drink. Write in a gratitude journal, list the things you feel grateful for over dinner, or make it a habit to find what you’re thankful for before you go to bed. Over time, being grateful becomes a second nature.
It’s impossible to stay strong when you’re thinking about something that happened last week or horrible things going to happen tomorrow. 38 It’s therefore of great significance to be able to concentrate on the present. With regular practice, you’ll increase the ability to focus.
It can be tempting to wait until you feel ready to make a change. But waiting until you feel good about yourself before you take action could backfire. Instead, when you change your behavior, your thoughts and your emotions will follow. So when you’re sad, put your shoulders back and smile, and you’ll feel better. 39
Every day is a chance to develop some mental strength. Simple, short exercises performed over time will help you build mental strength. 40 Feeling sorry for yourself and giving up after your first failure are just a few of the bad habits that could discourage you from building your mental strength.
A.The only time you can make changes is right now. B.With regular exercise, you’ll build your mental strength. C.You can stay away from the bad habits by regular training. D.Mental strength has a lot in common with physical strength. E.You can physically change your brain by making gratitude a habit. F.Pay attention to the bad habits that keep you out of mental strength. G.Always remember feelings of confidence won’t come out of nowhere.

It was an early winter morning. Joan was sleeping soundly when the phone rang in the living room. She rolled over and glanced at the clock on the wall—it was already nine o’clock. Every weekend morning, her mother had to work part-time in the cafe. Although Joan was still sleepy, she knew she had to get up. After all, she didn’t expect her brother Mike, who was sleeping like a log, to hear the phone. She quietly went over to the living room. When she picked up the receiver, on the other end came the warmhearted greetings, “Good morning, my dear!” Recognizing the voice from her father, Joan was immediately surrounded by a sense of joy and the sleepiness swept away.
Joan’s father was a seaman, who rarely came back. Working on the sea was really hard. Born in a not-rich family, Joan and Mike felt the stress of life but they were happy to enjoy the family atmosphere.
“Good morning, Dad, what’s up ” Joan said in an easy tone. “I have been very nice recently, my baby. Today is your mother’s birthday, and I have ordered her a cake online and it should come to the house in one and half an hour. Do remember to take the cake.”
Hearing her father’s words, Joan felt a little ashamed. How she could forget Mum’s birthday! She took a glance at the dirty clothes piled on the sofa and the oily floor that hadn’t been mopped (拖地) for a few days—There were two hours before her mother came back. She calculated they had enough time to prepare a surprise for Mum.
Thinking of this, she felt full of excitement. “Well, Dad, now I’m going to wake Mike up. We will give Mum a surprise!”
Joan hung up the phone with Dad, and hurriedly went to Mike’s room to share with him her Big Cleaning plan. After listening to Joan, Mike readily accepted her idea.
The Big Cleaning plan began. Joan collected the clothes from sofa and then put them in the water of a basin. After pouring in some washing liquids, she began to wash them by hand.
Realizing the clothes were clean enough, Joan gently squeezed water out and hung them to dry. Meanwhile, Mike was busy mopping the floor back and forth with all his strength, really aware of what hard work his Mum had at home! They had just finished the cleaning when the express boy came to the door.
注意: 续写字数为100字左右,请按如下格式作答。
With the cake placed on the table, Mum came in.
