Here are some wonderful festivals around the world that happen in spring. If you want to know more about them, please click here or visit http://www./festival.htm
Songkran—Thailand
Dates: 13 th-15th, April
In Thailand, people celebrate a festival called Songkran, when people head out to the streets with water guns to spray (喷洒) everyone who walks past. It’s a very important traditional celebration in the country.
Naghol—Vanuatu
Dates: Every Saturday from April to May
Every year, villagers come together to celebrate the harvest of yams (甘薯), an important part in the people’s diet in Vanuatu. The festival is most famous for its “land diving (潜水) ceremony”. During the ceremony men and boys dive to the ground from high wooden towers with only two thin vines (藤) tied to their feet.
Cherry Blossom Viewing—Japan
Dates: The cherry blossom season is different from year to year depending on the weather.
The festival is well-known. The Japanese celebrate the days when the flowers finally blossom. Only a few days later, the petals (花瓣) fall to the ground, like pink snowflakes. That means the traditional festival only lasts for several days. In Japan, almost everyone has picnics in the parks to view the flowers.
Sinhalese New Year—Sri Lanka
Dates: 13th or 14th, April
Just like in many other countries in South East Asia, this is the time when people celebrate the traditional New Year, an ancient celebration which marks the end of the harvest season and is one of two times of the year when the sun is straight above Sri Lanka. There are a lot of delicious foods during the celebration.

It was New Year time, but I wasn’t looking forward to it. That winter, my mother and my stepfather moved our family to Southern California. This would be our first New Year away from Alabama. My little brother, Paul, was delighted at a climate that allowed him to go to the beach whenever he wanted.
I, however, was a fat child with heavy southern accent. On my first day in the new class, I introduced myself in a low voice. The moment I opened my mouth to speak, the whole class burst into laughter, “He talks funny.” I was so frustrated that I went to call Granny Smith after school, who was my biggest support. But I didn’t get through.
On Sunday evening, the phone rang. It was Granny. She said she’d sent a New Year package. Sure enough, it arrived. We eagerly opened it. The smell of Granny’s house filled the room: a combination of fried meat, cakes, and decorations. Her house was small and always filled with tacky holiday decorations and homemade food before New Year. But in my childhood eyes, it was precious and fantastic. In the box, there was a familiar holiday.
Every New Year that we spent in California, the postman would call and said our package had arrived. Over the years, many treasures arrived in the box. For me, it’s always been the best part of the holiday.
24.How did the author’s brother feel when they were moving to California
A.Sad. B.Joyful. C.Grateful. D.Disappointed.

27.Which of the following can be the best title of the text
A.Granny’s Care Package B.An Unforgettable Holiday
C.Our Move to California D.A Telephone Call from Granny.

English businessman Richard Branson made history on July 11, 2021 as he and three other crewmates became the world’s first space tourists. The flight was made by a spacecraft named VSS Unity that was built by Branson’s company, Virgin Galactic. The flight lasted slightly more than an hour, and took Branson and crew to 53.5miles above the Earth, just a little above the boundary (边界) of space which lies 50 miles above the Earth.
At that height, the atmosphere turns into the black of outer space and the Earth becomes a bent ball of blue. Travelers also exhibit weightlessness as there is no gravity, the force that keeps our bodies walking on the Earth’s surface. Therefore, Branson and his fellows were able to float around in VSS Unity while enjoying the views.
On landing back, Branson said, “I have dreamt of this moment since I was a kid but honestly, nothing could prepare you for the view of the Earth from space. It was just magical. I’m just taking it all in, and it’s unreal.”
July 11’s flight is the start of space tourism for one and all. In early 2022, customers who can afford a ticket for a quarter of a million dollars can line up for a seat on a trip to space. And guess what—they will have a choice of spacecraft. Jeff Bezos, who owns a famous company, is all set to launch himself into space on July 20 on board a spacecraft built by his new branch company Blue Origin. Blue Origin will also carry tourists to space.
28.What is Richard Branson famous for
A.His success in tourism.
B.His company of Virgin Galactic.
C.His spaceship named VSS Unity.
D.His first commercial space travel in history.
29.What does Branson think of his space travel
A.Unbelievable. B.Adventurous. C.Regrettable. D.Worthless.
30.What do space tourists have to do
A.Take a spacecraft of Virgin Galactic.
B.Pay $250,000 for the rocket tour.
C.Pass the fitness test for astronauts.
D.Line up for a position in Blue Origin.
31.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.Humans will move to other livable planets.
B.Ordinary people will soon land on the moon.
C.Private rocket space travel is growing gradually.
D.Some companies give up their previous business.

As much as we like to think about nature embodying balance, the universe is actually filled with imbalance, too. Let’s take the supernova (超新星) for example. Two stars orbit each other. One of the stars is older, called a “white dwarf,” while the other star is a bit younger. Their mutual gravitational (重力的) interaction pulls material off the younger star and dumps (倾倒) it onto the surface of the white dwarf. If enough material falls onto the dwarf, the stuff dumped on to the white dwarf begins to “burn”.
If the conditions are right, you always burn up the same amount of material that gets added. If the donor star is dumping too much material onto the dwarf, the burning runs out of control. It consumes not just the new material on the white dwarf’s surface but the whole of the dwarf star itself. So much energy is release so quickly that the star finds itself wildly out of balance. In an instant, it becomes a super-hot ball of unbalanced pressure, BOOM! A supernova is born.
Closer to home, a similar but different kind of process happens in volcanoes. Volcanoes are born when magma (熔岩) from deep in the Earth makes its way slowly to the surface through cracks in the planet’s crust (地壳). The heat from the magma builds up a massive pressure imbalance inside the mountain. It’s that imbalance that drives the BOOM, the volcanic eruption that rips a zillion tons of rocks away and sends ash 15 miles into the sky.
But here’s the thing: Supernova, volcanoes and all those other explosions in the universe are not just awesome sights. They are all essential players in cosmic evolution Supernova create a lot of the elements in your body that are essential to life. No supernova, no you. And volcanoes are essential to evolution of the planet, including the cycling of greenhouse gases like CO2 that make Earth habitable. No volcanoes, no you.
32.What does the underlined phrase “the donor star” refer to in paragraph 2
A.The younger star. B.The older star.
C.The supernova. D.The white dwarf.
33.What factor leads to both the birth of supernovas and volcanic eruption
A.Hot magma. B.Burning material.
C.Unbalanced pressure. D.Gravitational interaction.
34.What can we learn about the explosions in the universe in the last paragraph
A.They evolve as players. B.They create human bodies.
C.They are awesome sights. D.They are necessary to life.
35.In which section of a website can you find this passage
A.Profile. B.Science. C.Health. D.Economy.

40 The outlook of college is very exciting, especially if you’re a rising junior or senior. Every college has a website, so start by visiting college websites that have majors that interest you. You can also read college review websites to get a sense of things like how much colleges cost and what students think about their schools.

We sometimes think we can take care of things on our own. However, sometimes we need to use the strength of our groups to get things done.
Ray Drake knew this better than anyone, because he was moved to tears when he understood how good it was to have good neighbors when he needed them.
In 1989, Drake lost the use of his legs. The Iowan man did have family, though. His two older sisters were there to help him get his life back on track and deal with his new situation. The plan worked for years, and their love helped him through hard times.
In August 2020, a strong windstorm stopped everything in Iowa. There was terrible damage, and 40% of the crops in the state were lost. People lost their electricity. Businesses were a mess and homes were all broken. So many people had a hard time.
The storm caused Drake to have a specific trouble. There were broken trees all over his yard, and he couldn’t move them. His sisters were also too small to clean up the trees. The three people really needed help.
After about a week, Drake’s sisters decided to ask for help because the power lines were still down and people were still trying to get their lives back together. They called some of their brother’s old high school friends to see if anyone had a chainsaw (链锯) they could bring over to start cutting up the fallen trees.
Doug Applegate, a friend, looked at the damage and realized that just a chainsaw wouldn’t be enough to clear the fallen trees from Drake’s yard and that the family would need more. He made a call for help in the area to see if anyone there could give a helping hand.

W: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to today’s “Where to Eat”. I’d like to introduce some places to eat in Henglong Shopping Center. People who like noodles can go to the Noodle House on the third floor. It is small, but very popular. The fried noodles with beef are delicious. Everything is clean and the waiters are friendly. Prices are good, too, but you may have to wait quite a long time as the restaurant is so busy. The Roma House is a new restaurant and also on the third floor. The pizza there tastes good. But the fish there smells bad. The waiters look a little serious and prices are very high. The Tokyo Restaurant is on the fourth floor next to the lift. It has been there for five years, and the waiters are very kind. The fish is delicious but the amount you get is quite small. Most of the food is delicious and always looks nice on the plate. The Golden Dragon is a large Chinese restaurant on the fifth floor. It has a lot of different food. The Beijing Duck is famous, and the fish is fresh and tastes good. Go there for a really good meal, but expect to pay a lot. Prices are high.

根据最后一段“Jeff Bezos, who owns a famous company, is all set to launch himself into space on July 20 on board a spacecraft built by his new branch company Blue Origin. Blue Origin will also carry tourists to space.(拥有一家著名公司的杰夫·贝佐斯将于7月20日乘坐其新分公司蓝色起源建造的航天器进入太空。蓝色起源还将把游客带到太空)”可知,新的分公司成立,并将继续把游客带到太空,由此可推知,私人太空旅行在逐渐增加。故选C。
D篇【答案】32.A 33.C 34.D 35.B
根据第一段中“One of the stars is older, called a “white dwarf,” while the other star is a bit younger. Their mutual gravitational interaction (相互引力相互作用) pulls material off the younger star and dumps it onto the surface of the white dwarf. 故选A项。
根据第二段中“So much energy is released so quickly that the star finds itself wildly out of balance. In an instant, it becomes a super-hot ball of unbalanced pressure, BOOM! A supernova is born. (如此多的能量释放得如此之快,以至于这颗恒星发现自己严重失去了平衡。
瞬间,它变成了一个压力不平衡的超级热球,轰!一颗超新星诞生)”和第三段中“The heat from the magma builds up a massive pressure imbalance inside the mountain. It’s that imbalance that drives the BOOM, the volcanic eruption that rips a zillion tons of rocks away and sends ash 15 miles into the sky.
根据最后一段“But here’s the thing: Supernova, volcanoes and all those other explosions in the universe are not just awesome sights. They are all essential players in cosmic (宇宙的) evolution. Supernova create a lot of the elements in your body that are essential to life. No supernova, no you. And volcanoes are essential to evolution of the planet, including the cycling of greenhouse gases like CO2 that make Earth habitable. No volcanoes, no you.
通读全文,尤其是第一段中“As much as we like to think about nature embodying balance, the universe is actually filled with imbalance, too. (尽管我们喜欢认为自然体现了平衡,但宇宙实际上也充满了不平衡)”可知,文章主要以超新星的诞生和火山爆发为例介绍了宇宙中不平衡的现象,这些爆炸不仅是令人敬畏的景象,也是宇宙进化的重要参与者,是生命所必需的。因此,文章属于科学范畴,可能出自网站的科学部分。故选B项。

(二)读后续写
Soon, the call for help was answered. A group of high school students, along with neighbors from the
surrounding area, volunteered to lend their strength and equipment. Upon arrival, they began to take things into their own hands. Some cut the fallen trees and removed them, and others repaired the damaged parts of the house. It was a touching sight to see these young individuals and neighbors working side by side with Doug Applegate and Drake’s sisters.
The joint effort turned a seemingly impossible task into a manageable one. In only two days, the community’s efforts began to pay off. The mess was cleared, home repaired, and the power restored. Drake could not believe it. He thanked all those helpful people as his eyes filled with tears. Drake’s heart was touched not only by the help he received but also by the realization that, even in the face of natural disasters, people came together to support one another.
