Sometimes when it feels like things are falling apart, they may actually be falling into place. This is exactly the case for Holly Smith, when she lost her job two years ago.
At the beginning of 2020, Holly was working as a general manager for a small independent bakery business in Surrey. She had been there for six years and couldn’t believe it when they told her she was fired, which came as a huge shock for her. She panicked about struggling to pay the bills and finding another job during such a difficult time.
Holly didn’t know where to turn at first, but she was determined to find a silver lining, so she picked up a paintbrush and began to paint. Holly painted a picture of her parent’s dog—Bailey, and shared the image online. Straight after, a few friends requested their own pet paintings and soon her career took off.
Holly named her business Holly & Murphy, after her special five-year-old cocker spaniel (可卡犬), Murphy. She is often inspired when she’s floating on water, together with her furry companion in her boat. She combines watercolour paints and pencils to bring dogs’ faces to life. A small painting usually takes two to three days to complete. Customers love how she captures their pet’s personality in great detail. Some of the most memorable paintings she has been asked to do are of dogs that have passed away. Her dog portraits start at 295 and can cost up to 595.
“When it first happened, it felt like the end of the world,” Holly, a current full-time painter and business owner, told The Mirror, “but it was the best thing that ever happened to me. And I’m so grateful to have a job that I love.”

The Masai (马赛人) are continually trying to keep their own ways in an increasingly modern world. They live along the border of Kenya and Tanzania in East Africa, moving their homes from time to time to follow their cattle, the source of their livelihood. They rely on their cattle in many parts of their life. They like drinking the cows’ milk.
They don’t kill their cattle for food. But if a cow is killed, the parts of its body are used to make containers, shoes, clothing, ropes, bed coverings and so on. Not all of the men have cows. The more cattle a man owns, the richer he is considered to be. A man who owns 50 or fewer cattle is considered poor. Rich men have a thousand or more. The cattle, though owned by the man, are considered to belong to the man’s entire family. The family names the cattle and can recognize each animal’s special voice.
The Masai men have become known as warriors (勇士), protecting their cattle against other wild animals. They wear their red long hair. Most women often take care of their children, cook food, clean clothes and make clothing at home. They also make necklaces, dresses and headdresses. A few women can also become authorities once they are powerful enough. They speak a language called Maa.
The houses of Masai made from sticks and grass, which are held together with a mixture of mud, are not very firm or safe. These plain houses with some basic supplies are built in a circle and make up a Masai village. They are not meant to last long since the migration (迁徙) of the cow population means that the Masai move as well. In the meantime, in order to prevent animals from entering, they also form a wall of branches. The whole setup is to protect the cattle, which sleep at night in the middle of the village. They seem to live a natural and self-sufficient life but lack modern civilisation.
28. What do we know about the Masai
A. They don’t move in their lives. B. They each have their own cows.
C. They don’t kill their cattle at all. D. They are heavily dependent on cattle.
29. What do most of the Masai women work as

30. Which word best describes Masai’s houses
A. Modern. B. Simple. C. Lasting. D. Safe.
31. What can be the best title for the text
A. Africans: Living a Moving Life
B. Africans: Brave People in the World
C. The Masai: Rich People in East Africa
D. The Masai: Maintaining a Traditional Lifestyle

These days, children spend less time in the fresh air. Many of them are addicted to a screen either on a computer or a TV—they seem to be living in a virtual world. They have lost touch with nature.
But now 400 organizations in the UK, from playgroups to the National Health Service, are encouraging children to have some “wild time”. They want kids to replace at least 30 minutes of watching TV or playing computer games for time playing outside. Activities such as building caves, climbing trees and playing hide and seek are just some of the things kids can do. Even if they live in a city, they can go on adventures in the garden or the park.
Children often need a helping hand from their mum and dad. They need to be shown what to do and where to go. Andy Simpson from National Health Service says, “We want parents to see what this magical wonder product does for their kids’ development, independence and creativity, by giving wild time a go.”
So despite the complicated (复杂的) world that young people grow up in now, it seems that going back to basics and experiencing “nature’s playground” is what modern children need. David Bond from Project Wild Thing says, “We need to make more space for wild time in children’s daily routine, freeing this generation of kids to have the sort of experiences that many of us took for granted (想当然).”
This might sound a bit old-fashioned to you or maybe, like me, it makes you think about sticking on your boots, getting outdoors and reliving your childhood. There’s no age limit on enjoying yourself!
32. What makes children lose touch with nature
A. Playing hide and seek. B. Building caves frequently.
C. Being addicted to a screen. D. Going on adventures in parks.
33. Who should be advised to see the effect of wild time according to Andy Simpson
A. Teachers. B. Experts. C. Children. D. Parents.
34. What might David probably agree
A. Children need more time to get close to nature.
B. Children always take it for granted to play outside.
C. What modern children need is spiritual satisfaction.
D. Parents should make larger room for kids to study.
35. What can be inferred from this passage
A. Everyone lives in a high-pressure world.
B. People at any age can enjoy wild time.
C. Adults desire to go back to childhood.
D. Watching TV is a good way to learn about nature.

Now I am a famous writer and public speaker who always believes in the great power of language. I still remember how the very first speech that I gave changed my life more than I could have ever imagined.
When I was in sixth grade, my teacher, Mrs Lin, encouraged me to sign up for the school speech contest. I was pretty bad at the rehearsal (排练). I felt quite nervous and afraid of failure. Therefore, after class, I ran to the office to find Mrs Lin. Hearing what I said, Mrs Lin sounded puzzled. “You’ve put your heart and soul into practicing it all these past few weeks.” “Yes,” I wanted to say. All I had dreamed of was to represent my school on that stage and be the best public speaker ever. Instead, I whispered, “I messed up big time at rehearsal today. I…I’ve been messing up regularly... a lot. I want to quit.” My words came fast on each other’s heels. “Can you tell the judges I’ve been seriously ill, please ” I sounded hopeless.
Mrs Lin was quiet for several moments. “Making up lies is not how we solve problems, Lucy,” she finally said. “You are not the person to shy away from a challenge.” I nodded uncertainly. Then she took out a book about Phoenix. She hoped that Phoenix could give me courage. During reading, Phoenix’s story of bravery and her fight for education fascinated me. Her determination and courage in the face of challenges deeply moved me. Inspired by her story, I decided that my speech would be about Phoenix and the importance of education for everyone.
As the day of the con test approached, I was still struggling with my fears. I knew I had to overcome them, not just for myself but also for the message I wanted to convey through Phoenix’s story. I decided to take a different approach to my preparation. I started by researching more about Phoenix, her life, her struggles, and her devotion to education. During this process, I also sought feedback from Mrs Lin. She listened attentively to my drafts and offered constructive comments. Her guidance was invaluable, helping me to shape a speech that was not only informative but also emotionally rich.

1.续写词数应为150个左右;

Dear students,
There is no denying that reading plays a very important role in our daily life./The value of reading cannot be overestimated. Not only can reading help broaden our horizons, but it also enables us to have a better understanding of the world around us./ Not only is it recreation, but it also lights a lamp in the mind, bettering our understanding of the world around us.
In order to inspire people to read more books, first of all, we can organize book exchanges to encourage traditional reading. Moreover, reading events can be held and online learning platforms can be launched to get people to read and share our favorite books with others.
It’s high time that we devoted ourselves to reading more books. Let’s take action from now on!

The day of the contest arrived and I stood in front of my schoolmates, my heart racing. The lecture hall was filled with students and teachers. As I began to speak, I saw encouraging smiles from Mrs Lin and my friends, which gave me the confidence to continue. I talked about Phoenix’s amazing journey, her challenges, and her great devotion to education. I described how, despite the challenges she faced, Phoenix continued to work hard. I concluded my speech by encouraging everyone to take inspiration from Phoenix and to strive for a better future through working hard. At last, my speech was met with loud applause.
Thanks to Mrs Lin, my dream was coming true. I not only won the contest but also got closer to my dream. I knew that without Mrs Lin, I would not have been successful. I made a promise to myself: to carry forward the lessons of courage that Mrs Lin had given. I would use my voice to empower others, to echo the stories that needed to be told, and to honor the guider who had set me on this path. The journey had just begun, and I was ready to embrace it with open arms and an open heart.
