If you put your history notes under your pillow (枕头) and sleep on them the night before an exam, will you do any better in the test Most of us have hoped this might help. However,can't go through the pillow into your brain. But that doesn't mean you can't learn while you sleep.
Scientists aren't exactly sure how it works, but they have discovered that the brain can learn things during sleeping hours.
In one experiment (实验),researchers gave German speakers some Dutch words to learn. Then, they divided them into three groups. The researchers played the Dutch words for people in Group 1 while they were sleeping, without telling these German speakers what they were doing. The sound was low so it didn't wake them up, and only the newly introduced words were used.
Another group listened to the same words while they were awake. The researchers found the people in Group 1 were better able to identic and translate the words later. This was true only for the words that were played while they were sleeping. The third group listened to words while they walked. The walkers did not have the same success remembering the words as the sleeping group.
The researchers later found that people had more slow- wave (慢波的)brain activities throughout the night. They said that more slow waves made people have better memory for the new words.

A tree has roots. People have roots, too. If you get to the root of a problem, you will solve it. It's the same thing as words. Dig deeply into a big, unfamiliar word, and you will understand where it came from.
As readers, especially those reading in a second language, we need to deal with the text as if we were detectives (侦探)looking for information to unlock the unknown. Like any good detective arriving at the crime scene, the first thing to do when meeting a new and difficult word is to judge the situation, to look at everything that is known and see if it helps us to understand what it means.
As you know, prefixes (前缀)and suffixes (后缀)can be added to the beginning or end of words to change the meaning. Know them, and you will have the word building power. But root words are the key. Take time to learn a few of these, put them in your memory, and you will become a master word detective.
Let's look at one common root word used in English. “Alter“ from the Latin word means “other”. When you meet this root word, you know that the bigger word has something to do with “other”. Examine the word “alternate”. Can you find the Latin root in it
If you and your friend like to eat out, first you pay and the other pays the next time. You are alternating paying.
