Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass are the greatest children’s book ever written.
The way it came into being is curious, an accident as interesting as the book itself. On a “golden afternoon” in
1832, a shy Oxford teacher Charles Dodgson took the three little daughters of his college dean (主任) on a boat trip
on the river with another Oxford teacher. Together they rowed along the river and had tea on the bank. As they
moved along slowly over the river, Dodgson created the world of Wonderland. We like to think that he invented the
story to make the young girls laugh, but more likely, he told the story in order to keep them quiet, to hold their
attention, or to stop their many questions--or perhaps even to keep them from rocking the boat.
The story almost evaporated (蒸发) in thin air and would have but for the persistence of Dodgson's favourite
of the three sisters, ten-year-old Alice Liddell. Many years after the river picnic, when Alice was an old woman, she
remembered that the story that Dodgson told on that particular river journey “must have been better than usual”
because “on the next day I started to pester (纠缠 ) him to write down the story for me which I had never done
before.” Alice remembered that she “kept going on, going on at him” until he promised to satisfy her. For one
reason or another, however, it took him almost two and a half years to deliver to his young friend the completed
manuscript (手稿), illustrated with his own drawings.
He gave the small green leather book to Alice as a Christmas present in 1835. It was then clearly kept in an
obvious place, and visitors would sometimes pick it up and look at it, even read through it. One visitor told Mrs.
Liddel to advise its author to publish it.
On May 9, 1863, Dodgson got a letter from a publisher announcing that they would get the book published.
4. What did the two Oxford teachers do with the three little girls on the afternoon in 1832

B. She reminded Dodgson of the picnic.

6. How did Charles Dodgson respond to Alice in about 1835
A. He sent Alice a birthday present.
B. He drew some paintings for Alice.
C. He showed the green leather book to visitors.
D. He delivered a completed manuscript to Alice.
7. What is the passage mainly about
A. HowAlice books came into being.

To understand Hip-hop’s future, look no further than the lead single “K-Pop” on the album "Utopia" by Travis
Scott. Mr Scott is American, but the song’s beat is part-Brazilian. The song features two other big stars, the
Weekend, a Canadian hit, and Bad Bunny, a Puerto Rican who raps in Spanish and has been the world's
most-streamed artist for three years on Spotify. The song has also generated interest from fans of Korean pop.
One critic has called it a "shockingly stupid plan to create the most popular song in the world", by bringing stars
and elements of global hip-hop into a single tune.
Since its supposed origin at a block party in New York on August 11th 1973, hip-hop, which includes rap
music, has become the most popular musical type in America, together with R&B. It has shaped the cultural image
of black Americans and has become so much a part of America’s identity.
Hip-hop’s past 50 years have been heavily American, with many stars and songs emerging there. But
America's hip-hop dominance (支配) in the next half-century will not be as great.
The geographical centre of hip-hop is shifting: first from New York City and Los Angeles, then to southern
cities like Atlanta in the 2000s, and now to everywhere. Many of the most influential new hip-hop stars are no
longer African-American. Take the very good Bad Bunny, whose song, "Me Porto Bonito", has been streamed
1.5bn times on Spotify since its release last year. A greater pool of talent is one reason that people in many
countries increasingly listen to local rap rather than American hip-hop artists. Also, people want to see themselves
represented.
This is the first time that artists in other countries are taking on Americans’ dominance of hip-hop so directly.
However, despite all the talk of a hip-hop downturn (低迷时期) in America, its influence remains undeniable and it
is just starting a new sort of tour: with more artists from more countries embracing the type than ever.
8. Why does the author mention “K-Pop” by Travis Scott
A. To give an example of classic hip-hop. B. To demonstrate the trend of hip-hop.
C. To stress the popularity of hip-hop. D. To recommend this global draw.
9. What influence has hip-hop had on America according to the text
A. It has made great contributions to America.
B. It has generated some other musical genres.
C. It has given rise to block parties in New York.
D. It is representative of African American culture.
10. Why do people in many countries prefer local rappers to American hip-hop artists
A. Because American hip-hop is out of date.
B. Because America doesn't have talent pool.
C. Because local rap reflects their own life.
D. Because they dislike American influence.
11. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. The rise and fall of American hip-hop.
B. The past glory and great promise of hip-hop.
C. Americans' dominance of hip-hop has gone.
D. Hip-hop will be less American and more global.
D
Of the five robotic landers that have made the attempt to land on the moon in the past year, only two sent by
national space agencies— those of India and Japan succeeded. Neither of the two from private companies
succeeded in their attempts. As a result, all eyes are now on Odysseus, a private lander which set off for the Moon
on a SpaceX Falcon 9 shortly after 6 am GMT on February 15th.
Odysseus, partly-funded by America’s space agency, NASA, was built by Intuitive Machines, an American
firm. It is aiming to land Odysseus near the Moon’s south pole, an area never visited before and considered rich
with promise because of the presence of frozen liquids and gases in some of its craters (大坑). Those deposits are
of great interest to scientists and may also be of practical use, providing water or rocket fuel to future lunar bases
and the rockets launching.
The two-ton lander, roughly the size of a telephone box, is carrying six NASA instruments that are intended to
pave the way for future human visits and a potential long-term presence. Five of NASA’s instruments will test
various navigation and landing technologies. The sixth will evaluate the Moon’s potential as a site for radio
astronomy, as well as the challenges of radio communication from a location where Earth is always low on the
lunar horizon.
A large number of things have to go right for the landing to succeed— and the failures of other recent lunar
missions demonstrate the wide variety of ways in which things can go wrong. Sometimes the problem is
software-related. In other cases, hardware is at fault. So for now the immediate question is whether Odysseus can
succeed where all previous private landers have failed. If all goes well, a successful lunar landing by Odysseus
would not just be the first by a private company; it would also be the first soft landing on the Moon by an
American-made spacecraft after the Apollo 17 mission of 1972.
12. Why does Odysseus attract all the attention
A. Because it will conduct a manned mission. B. Because the other private landers failed.
C. Because people trust the private firm. D. Because NASA funded it.
13. What does the underlined word “deposits” refer to in paragraph 2
A. The frozen liquids and gases. B. Areas rich with promise.
C. Water and rocket fuels. D. Some of the craters.
14. What does NASA expect this lander to do
A. To standardize the landing procedures.
B. To find an alternative navigational route.
C. To establish a base station for radio communication.
D. To explore the possibility of using Moon for radio astronomy.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Since 1972, no American spacecrafts have landed on the moon.
B. Private companies are more powerful than national ones.
C. Previous landing failures are all related to software.
D. Odysseus’s landing on the moon is impossible.

of the presents " asked my son, Blake.
Money was tight, and as a single parent, I was doing the best I could. My feelings were hurt, but l didn't want
to show it. I was very disappointed in their reactions to their presents.
“What kind of Christmas is this ” asked Allison.
I was starting to get angry now. How selfish and unappreciative could my children be What had we done I
was on my own now, and I couldn't maintain our old lifestyle.
"Okay! I want you to remember how you are acting this Christmas and the hurtful thing you have said. We
will be celebrating Christmas in a whole new way next year!" I told them.
The months went by quickly. I was planning our next Christmas celebration in my head a little every day and
determined to teach them a lesson. I contacted agencies to find a family that desperately needed help. That's how I
found the family with four children to support on low income.
That next Christmas we did all the usual traditions, but as Christmas Eve drew closer, there were still no
presents under the tree. Finally, my kids asked where the gifts were and I explained that we would be giving gifts to
a family that truly needed them. They needed to see what it was like to need essentials such as clothing and food.
We went shopping that weekend. We bought gifts for all the children and purchased everything they would
need for a nice Christmas dinner and the winter.
Blake and Allison didn't seem happy with the situation, but I was sure I had them thinking about their attitudes
last Christmas. I had a couple of gifts hidden in my closet, but they would only get them if they were polite and
respectful to this family and to me.

47. It was the day before Christmas Eve, the day we would deliver the food and gifts. When we arrived at the
family’s house, a warm but humble hut, their eyes widened at the sight. The youngest child of the family, barely
five years old, ran up to us with a smile that lit up his face brighter than any Christmas lights. As we handed out the
gifts and saw the genuine joy and gratitude on their faces. Meanwhile, I found that Allison’s eyes welled up with
tears, and Blake stood quietly, watching the scene.
The drive home was quiet. Maybe something unusual was growing in their hearts. When we finally reached
our house, Allison turned to me, saying "Mom, I’m sorry for being so ungrateful last year. Seeing that family today
made me realize how much we actually have." Blake nodded in agreement, adding, "I promise to never take
anything for granted again." Their words warmed my heart, knowing that they had learned a valuable lesson about
gratitude and empathy. As we sat down for our Christmas dinner, I sensed the atmosphere was filled with
appreciation and love, a true spirit of Christmas.
