Auggie’s Story
Sleep
I’d been reading for over an hour and sleep still didn’t come. It was almost two a. m. Everyone else was asleep. I had my flashlight (手电筒) on under the sleeping bag. Maybe the light was why I couldn’t sleep, but I was too afraid to turn it off. What had happened kept coming back to my mind.
When we got back to the camp, no one noticed we’d been gone. The teachers and all the other kids were still watching the movie. They didn’t know how something bad had just happened to me and Jack. It’s so strange how that can be, how you could have a night that’s the worst in your life, but to everybody else it’s just a usual night.
Amos, Miles and Henry brought us back to our seats. Then they returned to their own seats. In a way, everything was exactly as we had left it. The sky was the same. The movie was the same. Everyone’s faces were the same. Mine was the same.
But something was different. Something had changed.
Home
“So, do you want to hear about the bad part or the good part first ” I asked Mum.
“Whatever you want to talk about,” she answered.
“Well, except for last night, I had a fantastic time,” I said. “I feel like they ruined (毁坏) the whole trip for me.”
“No, sweetie. Don’t let them do that to you. You were there for more than forty-eight hours, and that awful part lasted one hour. Don’t let them take that away from you, okay ”
“I know.” I nodded. “But do I always have to worry about bad guys like that Like when I grow up, is it always going to be like this ”
“There are always going to be bad guys in the world, Auggie,” she said, looking at me. “But I really believe there are more good people on this earth than bad people, and the good people watch out for each other and take care of each other. Just like Jack was there for you. And Amos. And those other kids.”
“Oh yeah, Miles and Henry,” I answered. “They were amazing, too. It’s very strange because Miles and Henry haven’t even really been very nice to me at all during the year.”
“Sometimes people surprise us,” she said, rubbing the top of my head.

Alex noticed a folded piece of paper at the bottom of Leo’s lunchbox.
“What’s that ” asked Daniel, another boy in their class.

Daniel snorted. “Your mom puts notes in your lunchbox ”

(2024·江苏连云港·中考统考真题B篇)Holly gets a pet dog. She’s so happy, and the dog is happy, too! “I want to call him Eco,” says Holly. “Come here, Eco!” And Eco wags (摇摆) his tail.
“That dog is your responsibility (责任), Holly,” says her father. “No problem!” Holly agrees.
Before school, Holly takes Eco for his first morning walk. She feels very tired. It’s really cold and dark—and it’s so early! But Eco doesn’t mind. He runs, stops, runs again, sees a black cat, tries to run after it and nearly pulls Holly off her feet!
Holly realizes it’s late when she gets back from the walk. She quickly eats a piece of bread, takes her bag and jacket, and runs to school.
What a busy morning! But that’s not all for looking after a pet dog.
When Holly takes Eco for his evening walk, it’s quite dark outside. Holly feels nervous. She runs along the road with him, but it’s difficult. Because Eco often stops to study the bushes and trees. And he often tries to catch birds, or play with sticks and fallen leaves.
A few days go by. Then…
It’s raining outside. Eco enters…and the trouble starts. Eco’s dirty paws leave prints everywhere, on the floor, on the blanket, on the sofa…“Come here, Eco!” says Holly. She wants to stop him, but it doesn’t work.
Holly gets really angry now. She decides to punish Eco. So that night Eco is kept in the green house alone.
When Holly enters the green house next morning, it’s a disaster. Her mum’s plants and flowers are lying on their sides or on the floor. And the pots (花盆) are broken into a hundred pieces. And Eco is sitting in the soil and leaves.
“Oh, no,” says Holly. She realizes it’s time to train the dog. “He needs to know the rules.”
Every day after school, Holly repeats simple orders to Eco. If he can do as ordered, he can get nice bones. The amazing thing is, Eco really enjoys it. For him, it’s one big game.

It was my first day at school. It was also Miss Caroline’s first day to be a teacher.
Miss Caroline began the day by reading us a story about cats. Then she started to teach us the alphabet(字母表).
When Miss Caroline discovered that I was literate(有读写能力的), she said, “Tell your father not to teach you any more. It’s best to begin reading and writing with a fresh mind.”
After supper that night, Atticus sat down with the paper and called, “Scout, ready to read ”
I told Atticus I didn’t feel very well and didn’t think I’d go to school any more if it was all right with him.
“You never went to school and you do all right, so I’ll just stay home too. You can teach me like Granddaddy taught you.”

Sam and I walked along the main street, the small buildings giving us a break from the sun. Through the window of the candy shop I could see tubes of colorful jelly beans. A sign on the window’s glass read LOST: Gold and blue necklace. Verry special. If found, call Chrissy at 555-9924.
Chrissy had drawn a crayon version of the necklace at the bottom of the poster and a border made of orange exclamation points.
The necklace looked different from the one I clutched(紧握)in my pocket, I decided. Rounder, bluer. The poster appeared old and weathered. It must have been put up months ago.
“Hey,” Sam asked, “are you coming with me ”
We continued to walk, and I noticed four more posters. Someone must have returned that necklace by now, I thought.
Once home, I placed the necklace into my old yellow retainer box. I’d cleaned it out and made it my special place for special things. So far, it held twin miniature seashells, a pebble that looked exactly like a bird’s egg, and 11 half-burnt birthday candles.
I looked at the stone, so clean and polished. Could it be Chrissy’s Was it her “very special” necklace
“Uncle Coop,” I called, “would you take me to the store ”
We went into town together and stopped at Luann’s. Uncle Coop let me borrow his cell phone to call the number on the poster.
“Hello ” said a girl’s voice after one ring.
“Hi,” I said, . “Is this Chrissy ”
“Yes.”
“Um, my name is Ryan. I think I may have something that belongs to you.”
“My necklace ”
Fifteen minutes later, I was sitting at a table across from Chrissy. We were drinking milkshakes and sharing an order of sweet-potato fries while Uncle Coop and Chrissy’s dad drank coffee at the counter.
“It was a gift from my mom,” she said, “before she got sick.”
Chrissy looked down at the blue stone in her hand.
“I’m really sorry,” I said. “Holding on to it somehow makes things a little better,” she said. “Do you know what I mean ”
I thought about the mean kids at school and how holding on to beautiful things often made me feel better.
I nodded. “I think I do.”

(2023·江苏镇江·中考统考真题C篇)Katie was waiting for Gulliver’s calls. Instead, she just heard sparrows making noise in the bushes. “Maybe Gulliver missed the harbour.” Dad said. After breakfast, Katie took her camera to the harbour. All the colourful boats made pretty pictures, but not the one she wanted most.
Katie waved to Ernest, her uncle’s neighbour, on the boathouse. The gull’s name, Gulliver, was given by him. The gull’s size and his single leg made the bird itself different. But Ernest told Katie what Gulliver did that first summer Katie and her dad came caught everyone’s attention. Young Katie lay in her stroller(婴儿车)on the floating dock(码头)when Uncle Ralph and Dad were repairing boats nearby. The waves from the passing boat made Katie’s stroller shake strongly. “Kee-aah! Kee-aah!” Gulliver made the loudest cry. Dad and uncle rushed to Katie and stopped the stroller from falling into the water. They kept a close eye at Katie after that. Another summer Katie was three years old, she liked to touch everything. But Dad didn’t watch her every minute when she tried to catch small ducks around or fish from water. “Kee-aah! Kee-aah!” The gull’s cry brought Dad back in time. He stopped Katie as she tried to follow the small ducks running towards water. Several summers passed, and Gulliver continued to call out as Katie tried new things.
This summer Katie did the usual by-the-sea things she’d learned to do. One day, she rowed a boat out but was trapped on a rock by a storm. As she looked up and tried to catch the last warmth of the sunshine through dark clouds, she saw a single white feather. A gull feather She searched the sky for an answer. Putting her arms around knees, she closed eyes to hold in the tears(眼泪). “Kee-aah! Kee-aah!” Katie sat up. “Katie! Katie!” Soon, Dad and Uncle Ralph appeared. “How lucky! (2023·江苏南通·中考统考真题D篇)Jordan had his eye on a scoring record. Jordan took a deep breath as he stood in the doorway, looking in at the basketball court. Maybe today I’ll make history, he thought.
The city’s youth basketball league was holding a celebration. Today’s championship game marked 50 years since the league’s first title game(冠军争夺赛).
Before the game, Jordan looked over a special program. It listed the winners of each championship game and the top scorers.
Jordan stopped when he read the name of the top scorer from a game 30 years before. “Devin, look!” he said to his friend, “You see who has the all-time record My dad! Twenty-four points. But he never told me that.”
“Twenty-four points,” Devin said. “That’s great.”
Jordan’s best was 19 points. He was the league’s top scorer.
When his parents showed up at the gym, Jordan brought the program over to them.
His dad laughed. “I had quite a game that day,” he said. “But look at the score. I prefer to trade all my points for a win.”
Jordan hadn’t noticed that his dad’s team had lost by one point.
“That was a great group of teammates,” Dad said. “I’m still friends with a lot of them.”
As game time came near, Jordan slapped hands with his teammate Tara and then started to warm up. The courts filled up quickly.
Jordan felt strangely calm. He’d played so many games in this gym that it was like his own home. Jordan had led his team to a victory over the Lions last season. Why shouldn’t today be like that
Jordan grew even more confident when he hit the first 2 shots(投篮).
The Lions called a break. Jordan ran to the bench and jumped up and down with excitement.
“Great start,”Coach said. “But those guys are tough. They’ll come back on us.”
He was right. By half time, the Lions had pulled ahead, 27-24.
Jordan looked up at his parents. His dad nodded and called, “Great work!”
But Jordan didn’t feel quite as confident as he had before.
The teams traded baskets throughout the second half, with neither building a lead.
Eleven seconds left. The scoreboard was clear: LIONS 51. BADGERS 51.
Coach told Jordan to bring the ball up the court. “Look for Devin inside, but take the shot if you’re open,” he said.
Jordan glanced at his dad again. His dad pointed to Jordan, then held up two fingers on one hand and three fingers on the other.
“Me ” Jordan mouthed.
Dad nodded. Jordan had scored 23 points. Another basket would break the record. And it was the right time to do it!
Jordan ran right, then left, but he was still a long way from the basket.
The viewers started counting the seconds. “Four... three... two.”
Jordan rose to shoot. As the Lions rushed toward him, he passed the ball to Devin—wide open near the basket.
Devin turned and shot. The ball fell cleanly through the net for the winning points.
“Yes!” Jordan shouted. After celebrating with his team, he ran to hug his parents. “You still have the record,” he told his dad.

But maybe he will just keep surfing. “I think it would be interesting to try to surf until I’m 100,” Sano said. “I think I take better care of myself when I have dreams like this. Even now, I take better care of myself than I did before.”

Wednesday
Today it snowed for the first time this winter, and school
was cancelled. We were supposed to have a test in Pre-Algebra, and
I’ve been lazy ever since I became a Safety Patrol. So I was excited.
I called Rowley and told him to come over. We have been talking about building the world’s biggest snowman for the past couple of years now.
And when I say the world’s biggest snowman, I’m not joking. Our goal is to get into the “Guinness Book of World Records”.
But every year we’ve got serious about going for the record, all the snow has melted(融化), and we’ve missed our window of opportunity. So this year, I wanted to get started right away. When Rowley came over, we started rolling(滚)the first snowball to make the base. I thought the base was going to have to be at least eight feet tall on its own if we wanted to have a shot at breaking the record. But the snowball got very heavy, and we had to take a bunch of breaks in between rolls so we could catch our breath.
During one of our breaks, Mom came outside to go to the grocery store, but our snowball was blocking her car in. So we got a little free labour out of her.
After our break we pushed that snowball until we couldn’t push it any further. But when we looked behind us, we saw the mess we had made.
The snowball had got so heavy that it tore up all the turf(草皮)Dad had just laid down last autumn.
I was hoping it would snow a few more inches and cover up our tracks, but just like that, it stopped snowing.
Our plan to build the worlds’ biggest snowman was starting to fall apart. So I came up with a better idea for our snowball.
Every time it snows, the kids from Whirley Street use our hill for sledging, even though this isn’t their neighbourhood.
So tomorrow morning, when the Whirley Street kids come marching up our hill, we are going to teach those guys a lesson.

“Deal,” said Leo, taking his bag of pretzels out of bis lunchbox.
Alex noticed a folded piece of paper at the bottom of Leo’s lunchbox.
“What’s that ” asked Daniel, another boy in their class.
Before Leo could answer, Daniel grabbed the paper. He unfolded it and read in a loud voice: “Dear Leo, I hope you have a great day. Love. Mom.”
Daniel snorted. “Your mom puts notes in your lunchbox ”
“Yes,” Leo said.
Daniel read the note again, to himself. It almost looked as if he wanted to keep it.
“Give it back to Leo,” said Alex.

(2024·江苏扬州·中考统考真题B篇)One day in autumn Squire Gordon, my master, went on a trip into town. John, my caretaker, went with him. I pulled the cart. The weather was rainy and windy, but we travelled happily.
Gordon’s business took a long time. We didn’t leave until late afternoon. The wind was then much higher. My master said to John, “I have never been out in such a storm!” Mr Gordon and John could not see well in the rain.
We came to a wooden bridge. It was very nearly dark. We could just see that the water was over the middle of the bridge. But as that happened sometimes when the floods were out, master did not stop. The moment my feet touched the first part of the bridge, I felt sure there was something wrong. I dare (敢于) not go forward, and I made a dead stop. “Go on, Beauty,” said my master, and he gave me a touch with the whip (鞭子), but I dare not move. He gave me a sharp cut and I jumped, but I dare not go forward.
“There’s something wrong, sir,” said John, and he got out and tried to lead me forward. “Come on, Beauty.” But I knew that the bridge was not safe.
Just then the man on the other side saw us.
“Hey! Halloo! Stop!” he cried.
“What’s the matter ” shouted my master.
“The bridge is broken in the middle, and part of it is carried away. If you go onto it, you’ll be into the river.”
“Thank you for saving us, Beauty!” said John. He gently turned me round to the right hand road by the river side. It grew darker and darker, stiller and stiller.
When we returned home the Squire told Mrs Gordon, “Black Beauty saved our lives. He knew the bridge was dangerous.”

I told him what happened at school. “Miss Caroline said you taught me all wrong, so we can’t ever read any more. Please don’t send me back, please sir.”

“But if I keep on going to school, we can’t ever read any more…”
“That’s really worrying you, isn’t it ”
“Yes, sir.”
When Atticus looked at me, I saw the look on his face that always made me expect something. “Do you know what a compromise(妥协)is ” he asked.

“How lucky! We heard Gulliver as we came around the rocks,” Uncle Ralph said, “At least… it sounded like him. Strange, he was nowhere in sight.” Katie remembered the feather. “I thought I heard him, too.”

(2023·江苏盐城·中考统考真题D篇)When Mark walked empty-handed up the sand, the sun was shining brightly. The watching children were as disappointed as he was. They looked at each other and spoke softly so he couldn’t hear.
“Is that all ”
“Is he giving up ”
But Mark wasn’t giving up. He rested on the hot sand. He ate some chocolate biscuits and fed energy back into his body. Slowly his strength and determination returned. “Would the crayfish(鳌虾)still be there ” He wondered.

Down he dived. Down. Down. Down. Lungs bursting, ears popping, eyes painful. Nearly there. Pressure(压力), Pressure. He reached out his hands. Reaching. Reaching. But it was no good. He couldn’t make it. Only an arm’s length away, but he couldn’t reach the crayfish.

“You hurried too much. Take your time. Prepare yourself. Don’t dive until everything feels right,” he spoke to himself calmly, and he felt the confidence building up inside him. “I can do it. But maybe he will just keep surfing. “I think it would be interesting to try to surf until I’m 100,” Sano said. “I think I take better care of myself when I have dreams like this. Even now, I take better care of myself than I did before.”

(2022·江苏无锡·中考统考真题C篇)Lupe Medrano, a shy girl, was a straight-A student. Though Lupe had a sharp mind, she could not, no matter how much she tried, run as fast as the other girls. The truth was that Lupe was no good in sports.
“I’ll never be good at sports.” She felt angry one rainy day as she lay on her bed, looking at the shelf her father had made to hold her awards. “I wish I could win something, anything, even marble(弹珠).”
At the word “marbles”, she sat up. “That’s it. Maybe I could be good at playing marbles, and marbles is a sport.” She rushed out of her room and found the marbles in her brother’s room.
She practiced shooting softly at first. The marble rolled from her thumb(拇指)and clicked against the targeted(作为目标的)marble. But the target wouldn’t budge. She tried again and again, but the power from her thumb made the targeted marble roll only an inch or two.
She realized her thumb was weak and then decided to squeeze(捏)a rubber eraser one hundred times, hoping it would strengthen her thumb.
The weeks passed quickly. Lupe worked so hard that one day, while she was drying dishes, her mother asked why her thumb was swollen(肿胀的).
“It’s muscle,” Lupe explained, “I’ve been practicing for the marbles championship.”
“You, honey ” Her mother, Mrs. Medrano, knew Lupe was no good in sports.
“Yeah, I beat Alfonso, and he’s pretty good.”
When her father, Mr. Medrano, heard this, he was very happy and encouraged Lupe.
Practice, practice, practice. Lupe got better and better. Then the day of the championship came. She beat her first competitor easily, and won one marble, and then one after another. At last, Lupe was in the final to play against a girl in a baseball cap. The girl never even looked at Lupe.
“I don’t know, Dad. She looks tough.”
“You can do it,” her father encouraged. “Just think of the marbles, not the girl, and let your thumb do the work.”
