What’s the difference between the two sentences
In sentence (a) past continuous passive is used and the action was being done.
In sentence (b) past simple passive is used and the action was already finished.

Which sentence emphasises process and which emphasises result
Sentence (a) emphasises process.
and sentences (b) emphasises result.
Try to find out the difference of meaning in each group of sentences.

3) I didn’t realise our conversation was being recorded at that moment.

表示“某人/事过去的某个时刻正在被…”，主语是动作的承受者。
1）肯定形式：was/were＋being＋过去分词
Past continous passive
例：The house was being painted.
例：The house was not being painted.
2）否定形式: was/were＋not＋being＋过去分词
3）一般疑问形式: Was/Were＋主语＋being＋过去分词？
例：Was the house being painted？
例：How many houses were being painted in the
village
4）特殊疑问形式: 特殊疑问词＋was/were＋主语＋being＋过去分词？
基本用法：
1）过去进行时态的被动语态同它的主动语态一样，表示
过去正在进行的被动动作；
例：A meeting was being held when I was there.
我在时，会议在开着。
例：The college was being built at this time last year.
去年这个时候这所大学正在建设中。
2) 一般不与表示一段时间的状语或表示次数的状语连用，这时需要用完成时态的被动语态。
例：
The house over there was being built for two months.
应改为：
The house over there has been built for two months.
“三变”:
原句主语变为by短语
宾语变为主语
谓语由主动变为被动
“三不变”:
原句意思不变
原句时态不变
原句主谓宾以外成分不变。
They were building nine parks.
→Nine parks were being built by them.
→How many parks were being built
主动语态变被动语态
Walking home a few days ago, I saw that people were doing reconstruction work on the old market. It would be turned into a modern shopping mall. Some people were tearing down the old gate. Some were removing the wooden stands. Some were clearing away rubbish from the floor. While all this was going on, a journalist was taking photos. The resulting story in the local newspaper divided the people of the town: some were in favour of the new shopping mall, and some were against it.

Yesterday, I watched a documentary about the news industry in the past. I saw that an interview was being done face to face. But now, interviews can be done online. News was being edited with a pen while it can now be edited on a computer. News was being printed on paper while it can now be released on the Internet. Newspapers were being deivered to readers’ doors, whereas news can now be read online.
