Analysis of teaching materials Theme:Human and Self & Human and Society Topic:My dream job What: The topic of this lesson is about my dream job, aiming to lead Ss to use the future tense to express their dream jobs and how they are going to do that. And the passage to be learned in this lesson is written by the teacher, a passage about my dream job—A teacher. It is logical, concluding the beginning, body and the ending of a passage. It aims to help Ss to understand the structure of a passage about dream jobs. Why: The material is organized to enable Ss to achieve the following learning objectives: 1. To understand the structure of writing a passage about their dream jobs; 2. To be able to brainstorm more details in their mind map and passage; 3. To know the importance of working hard to make their dreams come true. How: The teaching materials are arranged according to the Ss’ learning progress from easy to difficult. From input to output, this part is close to the life of Ss. From the free talk to the understanding of the passage, and then to the writing, and evaluating, each stage is easy for Ss to accept.
Analysis of students Personality: The students in Grade 8 (=Ss) are active in thinking but not good at language expression. They are enthusiastic about the topic of dream jobs. But they become less interested in English than in Grade 7, as they feel it more difficult to learn English in Grade 8. Knowledge: Ss have learned some dream jobs and the plans to make their dreams come true in Section A, so they can identify them accurately in the text. With certain vocabulary, most of Ss can take part in the activities in class. Problem: It is a little difficult for some Ss to talk about more detail plans to make their dreams come true.
Teaching Objectives After this lesson, Ss will be able to: Use “be going to / plan to/ want to / decide to …” to express their dream jobs. Write a passage about their dream jobs by organizing paragraphs with the Hamburger Structure and a mind map. Evaluate their writing by using an assessment checklist. Learn to know that we should try our best to make our dreams come true.
Teaching focus T guides Ss to read a sample about my dream job and analyze the writing structure. T helps Ss to know that they should try their best to make their dreams come true and what they can do to be what they want to be.
Teaching difficulty Ss may have difficulties in adding more details about “How are they going to be … ” to enrich their wirting.

Lead-in (4 minutes) Activity 1: Watch a video Assign the main task of this lesson—growing a dream seed and writing a passage about my dream job. Show a video made by Ss from Haojiang Huafu about dream jobs. Activity 2: Free talk Have a free talk with Ss by asking the following questions: What do you want to be when you grow up Why do you want to be … To arouse Ss’ learning interest. Pre-writing (18 minutes) Activity 3: Brainstorm Lead Ss to think about “How are you going to be a dancer ” Show some samples and let Ss finish a mind map about their dream jobs. Activity 4: Group work Let Ss work in groups and put the sentences in the right order to make them a passage. Show Ss a writing structure—the hamburger structure. Activity 5: Analyze the Passage Lead Ss to analyze the main content of each paragraph and the structure of the passage. Let Ss read Para.2 and find out how I am going to be a teacher. Lead Ss to think about how we can add more details about our plans. Activity 6: Group work Let Ss discuss in groups and add more details for a job - basketball player. To lead Ss to learn the structure and the main content of a passage about dream job. While-writing (12 minutes) Activity 7: Write your dream job Let Ss add more details to their plans in their own mind map. Show a checklist about this passage. Let Ss write a passage about their dream job according to their mind map. To let Ss use “be going to / plan to/ want to / decide to …” to express their dream jobs. Post-writing (8 minutes) Activity 8: Evaluate Show the checklist. Show one student’s writing and lead all the Ss to give an evaluation for it according to the checklist.
