At the end of the class, students are able to:

3. Identify cause and effect during a talk.
4. Use some sentences to ask for input, to move on the conversation, to explore more options during discussion.
5. Identify the language characteristic of reminiscence.
diary 3:
We have been struggling for days, but things on Elephant Island are going from bad to worse. We are now crowded together under one of our boats on the rock shore of this miserable place. Soon after we arrived, Shackleton left us to find help on South Georgia Island, 1320 kilometres away---the vovage was too dangerous and difficult for all of us to make it in our small boats. If Shackleton fails, will we have any hope of rescue No. No navy in the world ever stops at Elephant Island, and no one else knows that we are here.
1. Did Shackleton succeed in finding help
2. What happened in the process of finding help
3.Who went with Shackleton
4. What was the result of the rescue plan

let’s observe and talk: what can you see in the picture in Page 42
Before listening 2: Guess what happened in the rescue process
was it easy or difficult
Sample:
According to diary information, I think the small picture was taken by crew members in the Elephant Island recording shackleton and some experienced members tried to sail to find help. Looking at the landscape in the picture I think Shackleton and his team would have faced many challenges. First of all, it was very cold and there was snow and ice everywhere. The area is also very mountainous, so they would have had to climb with their essentials. It would also be hard to know where they were going as the place is very large and all looks the same. On top of the physical challenges, they would have had great mental challenges facing those conditions and not knowing what to expect and whether they would succeed.
let’s listen and check
Listen to one of the team members talk about the rescue plan and their journey. Complete the summary.
The team consisted of __________ members. They sailed on rough seas for days before they landed on the ____________ side of South Georgia Island. Later they climbed over the mountains and _________________ the whaling station. Laster, Shackleton arranged for a rescue boat to return to _______________ Island. Luckily, everyone was __________________.

While listening 1: Listen to the main idea of the rescue plan.
1. Why was it necessary for Shackleton to travel to South Georgia Island
2. Why was it important to include a navigator in the team
3. Why did Shackleton choose the most difficult and unfriendly man to join the rescue mission

cause and effect
While listening 2: Listen again and answer these questions.
Identify cause and effect
During a talk, a speaker can talk about cause and effect. Causes are often introduced with phrases like
Due to..., The reason for this is ..., and because...., while effects are introduced by phrases like, That's why...,This means ..., so as to …, so that ...
Why was it necessary for Shackleton to travel to South Georgia Island
2. Why was it important to include a navigator in the team
3. Why did Shackleton choose the most difficult and unfriendly man to join the rescue mission
Shackleton had to travel to South Georgia Island to get help to rescue the rest of his crew.
It was important to include a navigator so they would know where they were going and not get lost.
Shackleton chose him because he wanted the crew left behind to remain cheerful and positive and the man would have had a negative influence on the crew.
4. Why did Shackleton look extremely old
Shackleton looked extremely old because of the conditions but also because he was very worried about the fate of his crew left behind.
He realised that many of crew were too ill to survive too long without rescue.
He predicted that their journey could be dangerous.
He knew the personalities of his crew very well.
He tried hsi best to find help.

listening text
We had stayed on Elephant Island for only a day, but Shackleton was already worried. He realised that many of us were too ill to survive very long without rescue.
He decided to go to South Georgia Island for help. He chose five members to join him on the trip and I was one of them. I have been working on ships for my whole life and my strong navigation skills could guide us across the dangerous sea. However, to my surprise, Shackleton also picked the most difficult and unfriendly member to join us on the trip. I later learnt that he did this because he wanted the group remaining on the island to stay cheerful and positive until we returned.
We siled on very rough seas for days. The sea was so strong that it was almost impossible for me to check our position. I was only able to use my instruments three times during the trip. It scared me to think that we might sail past South Georgia Island. This would mean that we might sail into the open sea and there would be no rescue!
After listening 2: Identify the text type and the language features
Unfortunately, we did sail off-course for a while, meaning we landed on the wrong side of South Georgia Island. We had to climb over the mountains to get help. The mountains looked so steep that I thought we might have to slide down them on our bottoms!
When we arrived at the whaling station, Shackleton immediately arranged for a rescue boat to return to Elephant Island.
However, due to the rough seas, we could not get near to the island.Shackleton became worried about the men. He was very anxious and began to look extremely old. We tried for three months to rescue the 22 men. Finally we were able to reach Elephant Island and luckily find everyone still alive! They were overjoyed to see us and everyone began to cry.
