while 在本句中意为“当……的时候，与……同时”，引导时间状语从句。从句中要用延续性动词。
e.g. Somebody broke in while I went out.
Somebody broke in while I was out.
【辨析】when 和 while 意思相近，都可引导时间状语从句。
when 意为“当……时”，表瞬间时间点，引导的从句谓语动词既可以是延续性动词，也可以是非延续性动词。主从句所述动作、事情可同时发生，也可有先后。
while用于两个延续性动作同时发生。引导的从句谓语动词是延续性动词
e.g.我们到达那里时，正在下雪。
It was snowing when we got there.(同时)
e.g.当我吃晚饭时，有人敲门。
While/When I was having supper,someone knocked at the door.(同时)

过去进行时
过去进行时：表示过去某个具体时间正在进行的动作。
过去进行时： was/were +v.ing
过去进行时由be动词的过去式was/were加动词现在分词构成，主要表示过去某个时刻或过去一段时间正在进行的动作。常与at 6:30 yesterday, at this time yesterday, from 8:00 to 9:30 等时间状语连用。
现在进行时：am/is/are +v.ing
过去进行时和一般过去时的区别：
过去进行时表示过去某时正在进行的动作，强调动作的连续性。
一般过去时表示一个完成的动作，即只表示有过这件事或比较短暂的动作。
e.g.他昨晚写了一封信。
He wrote a letter yesterday evening.(信写完了)
e.g.他昨晚一直在写一封信。
He was writing a letter yesterday evening.(信不一定写完)
