首页 Hello, everyone. As our journey of discovering the wisdom of the ancient Greeks approaches to the end, it’s time for us to have a revision. Let’s take this chance to know more about those ancient Greeks.
目标 In today’s lesson, we will review the words and the present perfect tense. We will try to offer, accept and refuse help in the dialogue. And then we’ll talk about the characters we’ve known about in this unit.
猜测人物 Do you still remember the game ‘Who am I’ First, let’s play this game and see if you can guess who I am. I’m going to pretend to be six different characters. Let’s start. 1. I’m good at solving maths problem. Once I got an idea when I took a bath. Who am I 2. I found the Greeks had left. I wondered why the horse was on wheels. Who am I 3. Helen and I were married. I was the King of Sparta. Who am I 4. I gave the golden apple to Aphrodite. I fell in love with Helen. Who am I 5. I suspected one of my crowns was not made entirely of gold. I asked Archimedes for help. Who am I 6. I ordered the soldiers to drag the horse into the city. The Greeks seized me after they entered the city. Who am I Have you got all of the names Number 1 is Archimedes. He got an idea when he got into a bath. Number 2 is the soldier from Troy. He talked with the captain at the beginning of the story, the night of the horse. Number 3 is Menelaus, the King of Sparta. Number 4 is Paris. He and Helen fell in love. Number 5 is Hiero. He was king who asked Archimedes to weigh his crown. Number 6 is the captain from Troy. He refused to listen to the soldier. In today’s lesson, we are going to know more about these six characters.
复习语法 Here are some words those six characters said. Take out your plete the sentences and figure out who said the sentence. Let’s start. 【练习1.5分钟】 We have fought the Greeks for ten years and we’ve won. The captain said it when he saw the Greeks sailed away. I have never seen such a huge wooden horse. But why is it on wheels The soldier said it when he saw the wooden horse. I have been in love with Helen since I saw her. It was Paris who said that. I have already asked other Greek kings to help me attack Troy. King Menelaus said it when he found Paris took Helen to Troy. Have you solved the problem of the crown yet It must be King Hiero, who cared about his crown. I have just thought of a way to solve the problem. Archimedes said so. These six sentences are all in the present perfect tense.
复习词汇 Here are also some words the six characters said. Finish task plete the sentences with the words in the box. Let’s start. 【练习1.5分钟】 Let’s check the answers. The captain said, ‘I can’t believe the Greeks tricked us and returned in the darkness. The soldier said, ‘The captain ordered us to drag the horse into the city.’ Paris said, ‘All the citizens of Troy love Helen because she is beautiful. Menelaus said, ‘I’ll send the army to attack Troy.’ Archimedes said, ‘I succeeded in solving the problem my king gave me.’ Hiero said, ‘I will seize the crown-maker and put him in prison.’
对话 Do you still remember how to offer, accept and refuse help Here are two situations. Dialogue one, before midnight, the soldier offers to guard the main gate of Troy. What will the soldier say to the captain Dialogue two, Archimedes is busy doing an experiment. How will Archimedes reply to the servant Let’s start. 【练习2分钟】
对话呈现 Let’s have a look at how my student completes the dialogue. Dialogue 1 【读屏幕】When the soldier offers help for the second time, the soldier gives a reason. It’s necessary especially when you are refused and you offer the help again. Let’s see dialogue 2. 【读屏幕】Archimedes refuses the servant’s help twice. When he refuses, he gives reasons and expresses thanks. For the third time, he accepts help and says thanks. Good job.
阅读 After we learned the story, the start of the Trojan War, my student Benny posted a question online. I’ve just read the story about the start of the Trojan War. I wonder whether Paris was brave or selfish. What do you think Read Linda’s opinion and answer the question. What does Linda think of Paris Let’s start. 【阅读2分钟】 What does Linda think of Paris She thinks Paris only cared about himself, so he was selfish. That’s Linda’s opinion. But how does Linda support her opinion How many examples does Linda use 【停顿】
理解结构 In order to explain why she thinks Paris was selfish, Linda explains why Paris chose Aphrodite. Paris didn’t care about who was the most beautiful goddess. He only wanted the most beautiful woman to fall in love with him. Next, Linda writes about what Paris did to King Menelaus. Linda highlights how Menelaus welcomed Paris to emphasize her point. Finally, she discusses the result of Paris’s action, which led to the war and the destruction of the city of Troy. So how to write about your opinion on the characters At the beginning, you need to express your opinion. And you need to find some details to support your opinion, like the characters’ action, the reason behind their action or the result of their action. In this unit, we’ve talked about a lot about the characters’ speech or dialogue. We can also find details from them. What’s more, you can pay attention if the writer has some descriptions about the characters.
收集信息 You are going to write about your opinion on the characters. First, choose one of the characters you want to write about and collect useful information from the story. You can choose the captain or Archimedes, or you can choose any character in this unit. If you have an opinion now, you can collect the information based on your opinion. If you haven’t formed an opinion yet, you can collect the information first and try to reach a conclusion based on the information you get. Fill in the table on task 4. Let’s start. 【练习2.5分钟】
信息呈现 Let’s take a look at what information my student gets from the story. What did the captain do He was no longer listening. He interrupted the soldier. What did he say They’ve taken everything. You don’t have to think. The captain thought the Greeks didn’t take the horse because it was too big. What was the result of the captain’s order The horse was moved into the city. And we all know what happened later. Now look at the information about Archimedes. The writer says Archimedes was the best scientist in the kingdom. Archimedes thought about the problem while a servant poured water. We all remember his speech. He made a clear explanation of the experiment. How could Archimedes solve the problem He solved the problem because he saw some water come out when he got in the bath. And in the end, he successfully solved the problem and actually his discovery changed the world.
写中 What do you think of the captain or Archimedes Or any other character you want to write about Don’t forget to use and organize the information you get. Let’s start. 【写作3.5分钟】
写后呈现 Let’s take a look at one of my students’ writings. After reading the story, I can understand why Archimedes was the best scientist at that time. He spent all of his time trying to solve the problem even when he took a bath. His ability to connect the problem to real life enabled him to solve the problem. He proved his thought step by step and explained it clearly. His discovery changed the world. The writer tries to explain the quality Archimedes shows from the story. The writer uses three examples, the time he spent on the problem, his ability to connect the problem to real life and his clear explanation. I think the examples the writer uses are fair. They are all based on the story. And I hope to see the writer can go further into the details and focus on one quality. Let’s read the second one. As a leader, the captain was supposed to give careful thought to the situation, but he didn’t. He simply concluded that the Greeks left the horse outside the gate because it was too big. He never wondered about the wheels and refused to think about the soldier’s doubt. He held responsibility for being tricked by the Greeks. I can see the writer’s opinion clearly. The captain didn’t give careful thought to the situation. The writer uses the captain’s words and action to support the point, and in the end, talks about the result of his action. I like this one.
作业 As the journey of discovering the wisdom comes to an end, I hope you can continue this journey yourself and read more about ancient Greece after class. Here is your homework. Goodbye, everyone.
