首页 Hi, everyone. Nice to see you again. Did you have a good time playing the game ‘Who am I’ with your classmates Who is good at asking questions and who is good at giving clues
目标 In today’s lesson, we will move on to learn how to offer, accept or refuse help in our daily life.
导入 First, let’s read a dialogue between the captain and the soldier. Captain, is there anything I can do to help No. We’ve found enough soldiers to pull the horse. Maybe I can collect more ropes. Fine. Do it now. What does the soldier try to do He tries to offer some help. He says he is willing to help and to collect more ropes. Does the captain accept his help At first, the captain doesn’t accept his help. He refuses his help. It means he doesn’t want the soldier’s help. But when the soldier offers to collect more ropes, the captain accepts his help. It means he agrees to let the soldier help them by collecting more ropes.
听对话 Now, listen to the dialogue between Jenny and Tony. Answer the questions. What’s the possible relationship between Jenny and Tony Who offers help And how does the other reply to the offer The recording will be played twice. Let’s listen. 【播放录音1分20秒】 Let’s check the answer. What’s the possible relationship between Jenny and Tony They are probably friends. It seems that Tony knows Jenny pretty well, so at least they are not strangers. Who offers help Tony offers help. He offers to help Jenny three times. Is the offer accepted Jenny refuses his help twice. She accepts his third offer.
朗读对话 Now you can open your book and turn to page 11. Let’s read the conversation after the recording. 【跟读录音】 What are the words Tony uses to offer help And what are the words Jenny uses to refuse and accept help Underline them in different colours in your book. Let’s start. 【练习1.5分钟】 These are the words Tony uses when he offers help. Anything I can do to help Come on, let me give you a hand. If you want, I could do some typing. And these are the words Jenny uses when she refuses Tony’s help. Thanks very much, but I can manage. No, thanks. I’m OK. Manage here means to be able to solve the problem or to deal with a difficult situation. Jenny means she is able to deal with lots of work on the school newspaper so she doesn’t need Tony’s help. And these are the words Jenny uses when she accepts Tony’s help. Oh, that would be good. Thanks a lot.
提供帮助 Here are some useful patterns to use when you want to offer help. If you try to offer help to a senior or a stranger, you may use these words like, Can I give you a hand Do you need any help Is there anything I can do Shall I help you May I assist you If you try to offer help to your peers like your friend, your brother or sister, your classmates, you can say Anything I can do Do you want anything Need a hand How about doing something for you
接受帮助 If you want to accept the help from a senior or a stranger, you may say That would be nice. Indeed, you could. Thank you. Yes, if you don’t mind. or Yes, I’d love some. If your peers give you a hand and you want to accept it, you can say Yes, please. Sure, thanks. That’s a good idea. Sounds nice! etc.
拒绝帮助 And if you really want to refuse a senior’s or a stranger’s help, you may say No, thank you. That’s very kind of you. But... I’d love to. But… Thanks for asking, but everything is under control. When refusing the help from your peers, you can say I’m fine. Thanks. Thanks, but… That’s all right. No. Everything is OK.
练习 Now, it’s time for you to practise. Take out your worksheet and complete task one. Let’s start. 【练习1.5分钟】 Let’s check the answers. Hello, Jenny, you look busy. Anything I can do to help Thanks, but I can manage. Let me give you a hand. No, thanks. I’m OK. If you want, I could wash the dishes. Wash the dishes Oh, that would be good. Thanks a lot. We’ve learned a lot of patterns to use when we want to offer, accept or refuse help. But how can we be better at talking with others
Tips Let’s go back to the conversation again. What else does Tony say when he offers help 【停顿】He says you look busy and Don’t be so independent all the time. If someone is independent, they do not need help from anyone else. So Tony means Jenny always refuses others’ helps and he hopes she doesn’t do so. When Tony offers help, he also give reasons. Does Jenny give reasons when she refuses Tony’s help Yes. She says but I can manage and I’m OK to show she is capable and doesn’t need Tony’s help. The first tip for you. Give reasons when you offer or refuses help. Let the other know why you want to help or why you don’t need help. Jenny uses thanks quite often in this dialogue. When she accepts Tony’s help, she says Thanks a lot. When she refuses Tony’s help, she also says Thanks very much and thanks to show she is thankful for Tony’s help although she doesn’t need it. So tip number 2, say thanks when you are offered help, whether you want to accept it or refuse it. And let’s think about why Jenny accepts Tony’s third offer. Tony tells Jenny the exact thing he can help with instead of just telling her he wants to help. And Jenny is surprised when he says he could do some typing. She may not know Tony could type or Tony is willing to do typing. So next time, if you really want to help, try to offer specific help.
话语标记 If you want to make a smooth conversation, here are some words that can be helpful. Why do they use hello and but in the conversation 【停顿】 These words are called discourse markers. Discourse markers are words and phrases used in speaking and writing to organize communication. Here these words help us organize the conversation. Hello is used to start a conversation. You draw the other’s attention. When you are saying sorry about something, you can use but to connect a reason. We can read the dialogue between the captain and the soldier again. What does “well” mean in the dialogue Well marks a change in the focus. Previously they focus on why the Greeks left the horse. By using “well”, the captain changes the topic and talks about pulling the horse inside. These words are called discourse markers. They help us organize our speech. And discourse markers can also help us show our feelings. As we’ve talked before, the captain uses “Ah” to show his surprise. Can you find such words in Tony and Jenny’s conversation 【停顿】 Sometimes we use “come on” to show that you do not believe what the other is saying. And we can use “come on” to encourage somebody to do something they do not want to do. Here Tony tries to encourage Jenny to accept his help. Tony uses all the time to show that Jenny refuses help very often, which upsets him a little. Jenny uses ‘Oh’ to show her surprise. So we can use the discourse markers to show our feelings. And most importantly, we need to understand what feelings the other wants to show by using the discourse markers.
练习 Let’s try to complete the dialogue again. This time, focus on how to offer, accept or refuse help in a better way. Finish task two. Let’s start. 【练习1.5分钟】 Let’s check the answers. Hello, Jenny. You look busy. Anything I can do to help Good start. And you offer the reason. Thanks, but I can manage. Let me give you hand. There seems a lot of work. This is a good reason. No, thanks. I’m OK. If you want, I could wash the dishes. This is a specific help. Oh, that would be good. Thanks a lot. Nice, you show you are surprised and thankful.
产出情境 Now read the situations and complete the conversations. Your teacher, Miss Li, is busy collecting books in the classroom. You really want to give her a hand. And you are laying the table before dinner. Your brother, Sam, wants to offer help. I’m wondering what you will say. Let’s start. 【练习1.5分钟】
产出呈现 Let’s take a look at how my student Linda complete the conversations. Hello, Miss Li. Can I give you a hand You look busy. Thanks, but I can manage. Maybe I could carry the books to the office. They look heavy. Oh, that would be nice. Thanks a lot. In this conversation, Linda gives reasons and offers a specific help. Let’s look at conversation two. Hey. Need a hand I’m fine, e on, let me help. Maybe I can help with the chopsticks. Ah, sounds nice. Thanks. In the second conversation, Linda uses proper words to refuse and accept help and she says thanks. Good job.
作业 After class, hope you can use what you’ve learned today in real situations. Here’s your homework. See you next time.
