Everyone tries their best in life, and sometimes a few kind words of encouragement can help people realize that their efforts are not in vain (徒劳).Ⅰ remember a time when I was in fifth grade, and I was a very shy girl.
There was a drawing competition at my school that day. As everyone started to use their creative ideas to draw, I was only trying to think of something creative that could express my thoughts and emotions. Lost in my own world, I was brought back to reality when my art teacher called my name from behind. She came to me and encouraged me, saying, “Don’t over think it, just put whatever comes to your mind on the canvas (画布). Do your best, and you will do well.”
Taking her words of wisdom to heart, I started my painting. Time flew by, and soon the bell rang, signaling the end of the time limit. We all turned in our canvases for inspection (检查).The next day, the winners of the competition were announced in front of the whole school. To my surprise,I heard my name being called second prize. It was a bolt from the blue for me, as I had never dared to dream of winning any prize.
Later on, I expressed my gratitude to my art teacher for her words of encouragement and for believing in me. That day, I became aware of my talent and started painting more whenever I had free time. Sometimes, I think that if it weren’t for her words of encouragement, I may have never discovered the talent I have.
Overall, this experience taught me the importance of encouraging others and how a few kind words can make a significant impact on someone’s life.

A. Addiction. B. Surprise. C. Disappointment. D. Puzzlement.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text

If you were asked to imagine a scientist, what image would come to your mind The idea that most of the kids have is a man wearing a white lab coat with messy hair, big glasses, and cups of colorful liquids giving off clouds of smoke. As for adults, the majority regard scientists as strange people who spend a lot of time working in a lonely lab. However, the reality is quite different.
Recently I’ve had a chance to take part in a scientific experience far from my lab and into Costa Rica. It has a large amount of wildlife due to its geographical placement between North and South America. It is home to more than 500,000 species (物种), which represents nearly 4% of the species worldwide!
First we worked to protect wildlife at a leatherback turtle (棱皮龟) protection center. We helped the volunteers to remove rubbish from the beach to create a safe environment for turtle eggs to come out. After that we stayed at Mount Arenal where we studied seismic (地壳的) activity relating to earthquakes. During our stay at Arenal, we rode over the mountainous areas and took a long walk through the rainforest. On the last day we got a professional introduction of rocket (火箭) science and learned about new rocket technology that will be used on the international space station.
During my Costa Rica experience, I know that being a scientist doesn’t mean working in a lab all day and night. A scientist is the one who loves learning and getting a better understanding of the world from helping protect wildlife, learning about
earthquakes or inventing rockets. I think that science is so much more than wearing a lab coat and mixing chemicals. Kids need to be aware of the excitement and adventures science can bring!
28.According to Paragraph 1, scientists are often believed ________.
A. to do experiments in messy labs B. to wear clothes in a different way
C. to spend too much time in labs D. to work in dangerous conditions
29.In Costa Rica, the author __________
A. experienced an earthquake B. picked up rubbish on the beach
C. took part in rocket experiments D. helped the volunteers collect turtle eggs
30. What does the author learn about science from his experience
A. Science is full of boring experiments.
B. Science is related to chemical liquids.
C. Science is more than working in a lab.
D. Science is about wildlife and earthquakes.
31.What is the best title for the passage
A. What a Scientist is Like B. Where a Scientist Works
C. How I Traveled in Costa Rica D. Why I Chose to Study Science
D
Cancer-fighting genes in elephants could help tackle one of the biggest killers of people, according to research. Despite their large bodies and long lifespans, elephants are much less likely to die from cancer than humans, with death rates of less than 5 percent.
The paradox has puzzled scientists because more cells lead to greater replications (复制), which increases the possibility of the body failing to detect damaged DNA or a faulty cell that can result in tumors(肿瘤). Elephants live for almost as long as humans and weigh up to five tons.
However, a group of British and European scientists say they have taken a big step towards solving Peto’s paradox, named after the British epidemiologist Sir Richard Peto. Elephants, they say, carry a much larger more diverse group of tumor-fighting proteins.
The findings, published last week in the journal Molecular Biology and Evolution, raise hopes that the cancer fighting genes in elephants could be the key to tackling cancer, which kills about 167, 000 Britons yearly. Cells keep dividing throughout an organism’s life, each carrying the risk of producing a tumor. One of the body’s weapons is a gene called p53 known as the “guardian of the genome”, which hunts cells with faulty DNA.It encourages the cell to repair itself or self-destruct, keeping the cell from combining with others and producing tumors.
Humans have two versions of p53 but elephants have 40, said the researchers. Biochemical analysis and computer simulations also showed that an elephant’s p53 genes are structurally slightly different, providing a much larger anti-cancer toolkit. The researchers suspect that while faulty cells might be able to skirt two p53 versions, they cannot combine with other cells as easily in the face of dozens.
The findings will open the way for research on how p53 genes of elephants are activated and on medical treatment for humans.
32.What has puzzled scientists
A. Elephants live long and weigh enormously.
B. Few elephants end up dying from cancer.
C. More cells lead to higher chances of tumors.
D. A larger body is less likely to discover faulty cells.
33.What can be learnt from Paragraph 4
A. How the anti-cancer gene works.
B. How many Britons die each year.
C. How the research was carried out.
D. What the findings have been applied to.
34.What does the underlined word “skirt” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Strengthen. B. Detect. C. Escaped. D. Cure.
35.Which is the text mainly about
A. Scientists find elephants live longer than humans.
B. P53 genes play essential role in preventing cancer.
C. Groundbreaking treatment for cancer is on the way.
D. Elephant genes could be key to fighting cancer.

读后续写
2.One possible version:
After a while I made friends. They were another way I learned English. I would pick up a lot of cool expressions just from spending time with them and listening to them speak. My friends were patient with me and helped me a lot, but I often became discouraged. Seeing I gave up speaking English, they tried to encourage me to speak out. They often invited me to their parties where I was surrounded by English atmosphere and I was forced to communicate with them in English.
Thinking back on the ways I have learned English over the years, I have something to say. It is clear that I am a visual learner who learns by seeing and looking. I had the most success when reading and using written materials. I enjoyed reading books, newspapers and magazines. Of course, it is also very important to be able to speak and listen. So, I spent lots of time trying to develop these skills, like getting involved in social activities with friends. So, if I could become more and more fluent, so can you!

M: Thank you. It’s great to be here. Let’s start with tip one. Don’t go to bed with the television on. Some people think they can sleep well with the TV on, but the noise and lights mean you don’t really sleep well, so turn it off!
Tip two: Don’t think too much before bedtime. Do your hardest homework earlier in the evening. Do easier homework later. If your brain is too busy and full of ideas it takes longer to get to sleep.
Tip three: Don’t play video games an hour before you go to sleep. You may get excited, they
can make your brain too busy and active.
Tip four: Turn off your cell phone when you go to bed. What is so important that it can’t wait until the morning If possible, leave your phone in another room.
Tip five: Play music if you like. But don’t play it too loud. Turn the sound down low.
W: Thank you for the useful advice for our young listeners, Doctor.
