Maps show where things are. Some maps show cities and some show the stars. Here I will introduce another kind of map, the Nature-in-the-Round map. It will show you the beauty of nature in your own area.
To create a Nature-in-the-Round map, you’ll need a piece of paper, a black pencil and some colored pencils or crayons. First, you should draw a large circle (圆) on the paper. Then cut it out. Next, draw a small picture of yourself in the center of the circle. Then take the paper and pencils outside and sit in the middle of an open area.
There are four kinds of the Nature-in-the-Round map. They are the sight map, the travel map, the sound map and the seasonal map.
The sight map
Now look around you. Draw everything that you see around you, including plants, insects and rocks——every natural thing you see. When you finish your picture, head back indoors and color your picture to complete the map. Write when and where your map is created.
The travel map
The next time you visit a park, a forest, a beach, or any other natural place, draw a map to help you remember your visit.
The sound map
Close your eyes and listen to the natural sounds around you. When you hear something, open your eyes. Draw what you hear, like a singing bird or a flowing river.
The seasonal map
Discover how nature changes from season to season. Sit in the same place to create a map during each season of the year.

Clara Daly was sitting on an Alaska Airlines flight from Boston to Los Angeles when she heard a worried voice over the loudspeaker, “Does anyone on board know American Sign Language ”
Clara, 15 years old at that time, pressed the call button (按钮). An air hostess came by and explained the situation. “We have a passenger on the plane who’s blind and deaf,” she said. The passenger (乘客) seemed to want something, but he was traveling alone and the air hostesses couldn’t understand what he needed.
Clara had been studying ASL for the past year to help blind and deaf people and she knew she’d be able to finger spell into the man’s palm (手掌). So she rose from her seat, walked toward the front of the plane, and knelt (跪) by the seat of the old man named Tim Cook. Gently taking his hand, she signed, “How are you Are you OK ” Cook asked for some water.
When the water arrived, Clara returned to her seat. She came by again a bit later because he wanted to know the time. On her third visit, she stopped and stayed for a while.
“He didn’t need anything. He was lonely and wanted to talk,” Clara said.
So for the next hour, she “talked” about her family and her plans for the future. Cook “told” Clara how he had become blind over time and shared stories of his days as a traveling salesman. Even though he couldn’t see her, she “looked attentively at his face with such kindness”, a passenger reported.
“Clara was amazing,” an air hostess said in an interview. “You could tell Cook was very excited to have someone he could speak to, and she was such an angel.”

Almost every child is told not to talk with strangers. According to parents, strangers are always dangerous. I followed the advice when I was little. However, I changed my mind after a special taxi ride.
It was a Sunday. I was waiting at a bus stop to go back to school. Unluckily, I waited a long time, but no bus came. As time went by, I became more and more nervous. Being late for school was the last thing I would do.
Just then, a taxi came and I stopped it. I was about to get into the taxi when a woman cut in line and opened the door. I didn’t want to argue with her and I decided to give up taking the taxi.
The taxi driver began to speak, “Madam, this girl stopped my car first. Can you let her go first ” Hearing this, the lady felt embarrassed (尴尬的). She said sorry to me and let me take the taxi.
In the car, I started talking with the driver. I asked him why he helped me. The driver explained, “I saw your school uniform, and I thought you must be in a hurry. Life is full of competition, and if necessary, you have to fight for a place.”
The experience not only made me braver, but also let me know the value of talking with strangers kindly.

书面表达
This afternoon, we had a chance to have a lively law lesson. During the lesson, we learnt about the story of two children running away from the kidnappers successfully. After that, we discussed some safety tips to protect ourselves from danger. Some students think we should shut the doors and windows before leaving home. Some students think we shouldn’t carry a lot of money with us. I think we’d better not to go out alone at night, especially girls. We shouldn’t speak to strangers either. I hope to have another lesson like this to learn more about the knowledge of law.
