Trees communicate. They migrate. They protect. They heal. This year for Arbor Day finds our favorite fiction, nonfiction books relating to trees.
The Overstory by Richard Powers, 2018
The Overstory begins with the nine characters whose lives will come together as the fiction unfolds. Their stories set the stage for a tale about a few environmentalists who are determined to protect an old forest. Richard Powers pulls you into their lives and fills you with astonishing facts about trees.
Finding the Mother Tree by Suzanne Simard, 2021
Finding the Mother Tree describes Simard's research on cooperation and coexistence in the forest. “Trees in a forest are often linked to each other via an older tree called a ‘mother’ tree,” Simard said. “And the old trees would help the little seedlings survive at crucial times.”
Twelve Trees by Daniel Lewis, 2024
There are tens of thousands of tree species on Earth, but writer Daniel Lewis focused in on just a dozen in his book, Twelve Trees. Lewis believes trees and people have more in common than you might think. “These twelve trees reflect aspects of ourselves. We coexist with them, and thus have a responsibility to understand them better.”
The Tree Doctor by Marie Mutsuki Mockett, 2024
A woman helps tend her mother's garden, leading her to confirm what she already knows: Her life as a wife and mother has caused her to ignore herself, and she must prioritize saving herself even more urgently than caring for her mother's flowers. The Tree Doctor is an excellent novel, showing one woman's response to life-changing crises.

When Stephanie Walsh began her dancing journey in her twenties, viral videos didn't exist. Now in her seventies, the hip-hop grandma has gained worldwide attention with her dynamic dance moves and incredible energy.
Walsh, better known as “Ms. Stephanie” online, has been featured on social media accounts with some videos drawing millions of people to watch. Her profile claims she is “inspiring the world to dance like no one is watching.” But they are watching, with a fanbase that is rapidly expanding everyday.“Dance isn't just your body, it's what you're feeling inside about the dance and it's what comes out here in your face,” Walsh said. “That's what I want to put through my movement, is how much fun it is, how much joy it gives you.”

At 40 years her junior, Gilbert, one of her followers, said Walsh inspires him every day. “I love that Ms. Stephanie is so humble. She's thankful that her videos are getting millions of views, but she still shows up and puts on a show because that's what she wants to do. She's a beautiful soul who taught me that it doesn't matter about your age or your size. As long as you feel good, that's all that matters.”

A real-world study by researchers at NTU Singapore has revealed that the application of cool paint coatings in cities can help pedestrians feel up to 1.5 degrees Celsius cooler, making the urban area more comfortable for work and leisure.
Cool paint coatings contain additives that reflect the sun's heat to reduce surface heat absorption and emission. They have been regarded as a potential solution to cool down the urban area and combat the Urban Heat Island effect, a phenomenon in which urban areas experience warmer temperatures than their outlying surroundings.
Now, NTU researchers have conducted a pioneering real-world study to comprehensively evaluate how well cool paint coatings work in reducing city heat.
To carry out their real-world experiments, the NTU researchers selected four rectangular buildings that created two “street canyons”——narrow streets lined by buildings. One canyon, or “cool canyon” was coated with cool paints on the roofs, walls, and road pavement, while the other canyon remained as it was as a “control” for the experiment. Using environmental sensors, the NTU team monitored the conditions in the two canyons over two months, which included air movement,
surface and air temperature, humidity, and radiation, to see how well the cool paint coatings worked in reducing city heat.
The researchers found that during a 24-hour cycle, the cool canyon saw up to a 30%reduction in heat released from the built-up surfaces, resulting in the air temperature in the cool canyon being cooler than the conventional canyon by up to 2°C during the hottest time of the day, at around 4 pm. As a result, pedestrians in the cool canyon can feel up to 1.5°C cooler. The NTU research team also found that air temperature in the cool canyon was lowered because less heat was absorbed by and stored in the building walls, roofs, and roads, which would subsequently have been released to either heat up the surrounding air or the building's inside.
With global warming, people will increasingly look for ways to stay cool. The study shows how cool paint coatings can be a strategy to reduce the Urban Heat Island effect in future.
28. What is the function of paragraph 2
A. To introduce the purpose of the study.
B. To illustrate the findings of the study.
C. To explain the theoretical base of the study.
D. To provide background information for the study.
29. What is the primary purpose of the real-world study by NTU researchers
A. To assess the effectiveness of cool paint coatings.
B. To investigate the effect of climate on urban areas.
C. To study the behavior of pedestrians in urban areas.
D. To analyze the impact of urbanization on the environment.
30. What is one potential benefit of using cool paint coatings in cities
A. Increasing air quality levels. B. Improving pedestrians' comfort.
C. Enhancing surface heat absorption. D. Saving energy consumption in winter.
31. What can we learn from the passage
A. The real-world study is a first of its kind study.
B. The cool paint coatings also have markets in rural areas.
C. The cool paint coatings have proved effective worldwide.
D. Many cutting-edge technologies are employed in the study.
D
For thousands of years, humans have raced to be the first to climb a peak, cross a frontier, or document a new species or landscape. Now in some cases, people are racing to be the last.
In recent years, a growing industry has been stimulated by climate change ——last-chance tourism. According to Eco Sustainable Solutions, a UK-based organic recycling and waste processing company last-chance tourism is a kind of tourism geared toward seeing the last of something due to climate change. As temperatures and water levels rise, this could mean seizing the last chance to see the Great Barrier Reef, an Arctic glacier and a remote island that is sinking.
As millions of tourists rush to imperiled destinations, some are taking advantage of the increasing demand to spread environmental awareness. One tourist spot, the Sea of Ice in France, opened an exhibit in 2021 to educate visitors on glaciers and climate change. This educational push seems to be having an impact, as a 2023 survey showed that 80% of the visitors would try to learn
more about the environment and how to protect it while 77% said that they would reduce their water and energy use.
However, the last-chance tourism industry may become kind of our concern. As more and more people flood into these areas in a panic to see them before they are gone, they in fact contribute to the increased greenhouse gas emissions and over-tourism, leading to their destruction. Just as many scholars put it, last-chance tourism is a paradox(悖论).
Although tourists may acknowledge the broader risks and importance of climate change, it's even more important to connect the responsibility of the individual tourism to the future of our planet. It's not just about understanding the need to stop climate change; it's even more important to avoid making it worse.
32. What is last-chance tourism primarily driven by
A. Adventure seeking. B. Cultural exploration.
C. Environmental awareness. D. Historical preservation.
33. What does the underlined word “imperiled” in paragraph 3 most likely mean
A. Developed. B. Endangered. C. Deserted. D. Preserved.
34. What is suggested in addressing the negative impacts of last-chance tourism
A. Promoting cultural preservation efforts.
B. Spreading awareness about climate change.
C. Reducing individual contributions to climate change.
D. Encouraging more tourists to visit imperiled destinations.
35. Which of the following can best describe last-chance tourism
A. It's a stone to kill two birds. B. It's a double-edged sword.
C. It's a life jacket in the stormy sea. D. It's a solution once and for all.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Riding a bike boosts mental well-being. 36 They don't see it as work and rather, they see it as fun and freedom. Here are some ideas on how your family can take advantage of this powerful mental health supercharge.
Allow kids control. 37 We're guiding kids but giving them agency to make decisions. So, parents might highlight several kid-friendly destinations on a map of the city, and let the child decide where to go and how to get there on the bike.
Offer them jobs. 38 For instance, whoever is leading the ride gets to be in charge of a pre-ride check: Does everyone have their helmet secured, lights on, and water bottle filled During the ride, a leader can call out things to watch for, like stones or a stop sign.
Focus on the fun. To ensure riders don't get bored too quickly, build in a fun pit stop rather than making the ride the only focus. 39 Adventure can be urban or rural, too. If you live in a city with access to bike parks, join in the fun. For rural landscapes or those with access to bike trails, search for local beauty on the ride.
Bring some friends. The benefits of cycling can multiply when it becomes a social activity. Exercise in groups is often more motivating for people. 40

B. Self-paced exploration and adventure are key on the bike.
C. How, exactly, does one hand over control to children on a bike ride

Sometimes you can count on people to do the right thing. When Dave Tally found a backpack with a laptop and an envelope full of cash in 2010, he could have considered it a very lucky day. The homeless man counted $3,300 in the bag, an amount that would make a huge difference in his life. However, as tempting as it was to keep the money, deep down he knew it wasn't the right thing to do.
Back then, Tally was sleeping in the basements of local churches and trying to save up enough money to fix his only source of transportation: his bike. That money could have bought him, a brand new one. Instead, he turned the bag to his boss at the Tempe Community Action Agency, an
organization that helps homeless people in the area find jobs. Tally had been working there part-time.“ Finding the envelope with the cash was just exciting. There were lots of crazy thoughts that went through my head,” Tally told ABC News at the time. “I went into the survival mode for a moment, actually more than a moment, thinking about all the things I could do for myself.”
“I beat myself up pretty hard for even thinking I would spend one cent of that person's money,” Tally added.
After Tally made up his mind to return the bag, he faced the problem of tracking down its owner. There were no identifiers on the backpack or a way to get into the laptop without a password. But then someone suggested checking the flash drive that they’d also found inside the bag to see if it held any clues.
It sure did. Arizona State University student Bryan Belanger had uploaded his resume to the drive, easily providing Tally with his contact information. As it turned out, Bryan Belanger was carrying that cash because he was buying a used car from Craigslist website, and he accidentally left his belongings in a station on the way to work.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Belanger was regretful for his carelessness and thought his backpack was gone forever.
Tally said the day he found the money's rightful owner was the day his life changed.
