Puffins are adorable birds with big, colorful beaks (喙) that live in grassy cliffs in the Far North. One summer day, my husband and I boarded the boat to Flatey Island, eager to catch a glimpse of these charming creatures.
As soon as the boat left the harbor, the rain started pouring. The wind picked up, and the boat began to jump. I was beginning to feel seasick.
By the time we reached the island, my fingers were blue. The boat wouldn’t go back for four hours. We huddled under the shelter of a warehouse, wondering what to do. Then a woman wearing mittens (手套) came close to us. “You look cold,” she said. “Would you like to come to our house for lunch ”
It was a small yellow house at the edge of the village. It was full of people, young and old. They made room for us at the table. We ate and drank a lot, and they told us all about the puffins and the other birds on the island.
It was almost time for the boat to leave, our new friend Sigrid walked in the rain with us to the puffins’ cliffs. We sat still on the wet rocks, watching the birds fly right toward us, cocking their heads as if wondering what we were doing on their island. They made us laugh.
When the boat whistle blew, Sigrid took my hand to say good-bye. “Your hands are so cold!” Slipping her mittens off, she handed them to me. “You need to have mittens for the boat ride,” she said.
It’s been seventeen years, and I still have Sigrid’s mittens. They’re not fancy and bright like the puffin’s beak. But as much as I liked those funny little birds, it’s the mittens I think of when I remembered the island. I’ve spent years trying to be as kind to someone else as Sigrid was to me that day.

Wild animals seem to have escaped the Indian Ocean tsunami, adding weight to the idea that they have a “sixth sense” of disasters, experts said on Thursday.
Sri Lanka wildlife officials have said the waves that killed over 24,000 people along the Indian Ocean island’s coast seemingly missed wildlife, with no dead animals found.
“No elephants are dead, not even a dead hare (野兔) or rabbit. I think animals can sense the disaster. They have a ‘sixth sense’. They know when things are happening, H.D.Ratnayake, director of Sri Lanka’s Wildlife Department, said on Wednesday.
The waves washed floodwaters up to 3 km inland at Yala National Park in the southeast, Sri Lanka’s biggest wildlife reserve and home to hundreds of wild elephants. “There has been a lot of evidence of dogs barking or birds migrating (迁徙) before volcanic eruptions or earthquakes. But it has not been proved,” said Matthew van Lierop, an animal behaviour specialist at Johannesburg Zoo. “There have been no specific studies because you can’t really test it in a lab or a field setting,” he said. Other authorities agreed with this opinion.
“Wildlife seems to be able to pick up certain signs, especially birds. There are many reports of birds detecting coming disasters,” said Clive Walker, who has written several books on African wildlife.
Animals certainly rely on the known senses such as smell or hearing to avoid danger such as predators (掠食动物). The idea of an animal “sixth sense” is a lasting one that the evidence of Sri Lanka’s damaged coast is likely to add to.
26.What happened after the Indian Ocean tsunami
A.Many people died but wild animals survived.
B.The “six sense” of wild animals developed.
C.Wild animals were killed or went missing.
D.The coast was found in good condition.
27.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “detecting” in Paragraph5
A.Taking up. B.Putting up. C.Picking up. D.Bringing up.
28.What is the text mainly about
A.It seems that animals can save themselves from natural disasters.
B.The different opinions about animals’ natural power.
C.How to protect wildlife when disasters happen.
D.The serious damage of the Indian Ocean tsunami.
29.In which section of a newspaper can we read this text
A.Travel. B.Custom. C.Culture. D.Discovery.
Every two weeks, the time period after which many people collect a paycheck, a language dies.
So concerning is the potential for language loss that the National Science Foundation this year launched the Documenting Endangered Languages program to advance knowledge related to endangered human languages. The launch of the program is even more urgent given the fact that about half of all current languages being used in the world have been classified at varying degrees of endangerment.
At the University of Arizona, which is an important site for language preservation, a number of researchers are involved in activities meant to document endangered and lost languages. Others are working to help preserve languages classified as "moribund", meaning that no children are learning their native languages as their first
languages in their own homes.
A number of UA programs—some of them decades old—are dedicated to language preservation. Most recently, Christian Ruvalcaba, a graduate student, launched "The Language Capital Project "and is creating maps for corresponding website to help non-national language speakers to find and connect with one another.
"Languages allow people to create an identity for themselves and as community members", said Elizabeth Kickham, a visiting professor in the UA Department of Linguistics. "Language is so closely tied to culture: it not only reflects cultural practices, it is also influenced by them. Language and culture influence each other, so it’s difficult to separate them. You can, but you lose something when you do."
"One of the advantages of studying at the University of Arizona is the wealth of linguistic diversity to be found among the student population,” said Kickham, who involved her students in language preservation training this semester.
"Exposure to diverse populations, including languages, enables a richer understanding of the human experience," Kickham said. " Languages are beautiful. When people hear someone speaking a language they needn’t feel that the person doesn’t know how to speak English but rather that person has a wealth of resources."
30.Why did the National Science Foundation launch the program
A.To bring back lost languages.
B.To develop endangered languages.
C.To increase understanding of endangered languages.
D.To investigate the number of endangered languages.
31.What do the maps created by Ruvalcaba inform people about
A.Where there is a website for lost languages
B.Where non-national language speakers live.
C.Where they can learn the national language.
D.Where they can communicate in their native language.
32.What did Kickham want to point out in what she said
A.The influence of cultural practices. B.The importance of diverse languages.
C.A need for language preservation training D.A better understanding of different cultures.
33.What is the best title for the text
A.Language Loss Calls for Preservation B.Language Reflects Human Self-identity
C.Preserving Non-national Language D.Identifying the Causes of Language Loss
Overcome Your Procrastination
Procrastination (拖延) is a phenomenon we are familiar with. When we procrastinate we waste our free time and put off important tasks we should do until it’s too late. It’s a bad habit stopping us achieving greater success in life. 34
Break your work down into little parts.
Part of the reason why we procrastinate is that we find the work too much and huge for us. Break it down into little parts, and then focus on one part at a time. If you still procrastinate after doing so, break it down even further. 35
Change your environment.
Look at your work desk and your room. Do they make you want to work or do they make you sleepy 36
Create a detailed timeline with specific deadlines.
37 That’s because we would get the impression that we have time and keep pushing everything back until it’s too late. Break down your project, and then create an overall timeline with specific deadlines (截止日期) for each small task. In this way, you know you have to finish each task by a certain date.
38

六、书面表达
65.Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
College admission season is upon us. With the ever-increasing competition among college applicants, writing an effective and sincere college recommendation letter is one way high school teachers can help students stand out among the competition. Here are a few things I have learned how to write a recommendation for my students.
Try beginning your letter with something the person tasked with screening hundreds of recommendation letters will remember. I like to start with an amusing story that illustrates who the student is and how others perceive them. Make sure to use the student’s full name for the first reference and then just the first name after that. My favorite strategy is to end the paragraph with a single sentence that highlights the student’s strongest characteristics.
In the body of the letter, focus on who the student is rather than what the student has done. What college reps want to know is how the student will fit into their environment. Give specific examples of how the student achieved--did they overcome obstacles or tackle any challenges to reach their goals I usually write two short paragraphs for the body. Sometimes the first relates character to academics, and the next relates character to extracurricular activities. Other times, I use the student’s characteristics as the main focal points.
Conclude with a sincere statement of recommendation for the student to the college of their choice. When sending the recommendation to a single college, use the college’s name in your recommendation. Lastly, I return to using the student’s full name in my final reference to him in the letter.
My last statement encourages the college to contact me with any further questions. I’ll be surely delighted to receive any of their inquiry, meaning my student is under their consideration!参考答案:
