When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail His reply: "Because I love your stories. If you're willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this." Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere's horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith(银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse's mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else's choice.
What did the horse think, as the sped through the night Did he get tired Have doubts Did he want to quit I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere's horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, "Great. Now, write it again." I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn't win, I wouldn't care.

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route (路线) through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn't with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school's coach and asked him what had happened. "I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him," he explained uncomfortably. "I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide."
I bit back my frustration (懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that's all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

Zaki was small for his twelve years, and he hated being treated as a child. Farid, his older brother, had been looked upon as a man long before he was Zaki's age. Now, every day as the sun warmed the Gulf, Farid and the other young men went out in their wooden boats to dive for oysters. With luck, there would be pearls in many of them. Each pearl earned a bonus for the man who found it.
Many times Zaki begged to go along, but Farid always refused.
"You " Farid would laugh. "First, small one, you have to become larger than the oyster!" Still laughing, Farid would go his manly way, leaving Zaki bitter and angry.
So every day Zaki would go to the shallow water to practice. His grandfather, a former diver, would watch him and advise him. All morning, Zaki would practice diving beneath the waves. Every afternoon, he would again go underwater and hold his breath. With daily practice, his diving improved gradually. Soon Zaki felt as much at home in the water as he did out of it.
Zaki decided to challenge Farid the next day. He rose early the next morning. Even so, he had to hurry to catch up with Farid, who was already on the beach.
"Farid, wait!" called Zaki. "I must speak to you."
In the stillness of the morning his voice carried clearly. The group of men around Farid grew quiet as Zaki spoke.
"Farid, I say that I can hold my breath under the water as long as you can. If I win, I ask only that you treat me as a man and let me dive by your side." The men of the village burst out laughing.
Farid looked amused. "And what happens, younger brother, when you lose "
Looked down upon, Zaki shouted, "I will not lose! Let's go into the Gulf to compete. The men of the village are here to judge."
Farid looked surprised, but with all of his friends looking on, he had little choice but to agree.

The icy wind howled across the empty street and it was an unusually quiet day in the emergency room on December 25th. Quiet, that is, except for the nurses who were standing around the nurses' station complaining about having to work on Christmas Day, for people were supposed to be spending time with their families, exchanging gifts and wishes.
I was guiding nurse that day and had just done the cleanup in the waiting room. Since there were no patients waiting to be seen at the time, I returned to the nurses' station for a cup of hot coffee that someone had brought in for Christmas. Just then, a colleague came back and told me I had five patients waiting to be evaluated.
I was surprised, "Five, how did I get five; I was just out there and no one was in the waiting room."
"Well, there are five signed in."
So I went straight out and called the first name. Five bodies showed up at my guiding desk, a pale short woman and four small children in untidy clothing.
"Are you all sick " I asked suspiciously.
"Yes," she said weakly and lowered her head.
"Okay," I replied, unconvinced, "Who's first " One by one they sat down, and I asked the usual beginning questions. When it came to the descriptions of their symptoms, things got a little confusing. Two of the children had headaches, but the headaches weren't accompanied by the normal body language of holding the head or trying to keep it still. Two children had earaches, but only one could tell me which ear was affected. The mother complained of a cough, but seemed to try hard to produce it.
Something was wrong with the picture. Our hospital policy, however, was not to turn down any patient, so we would see them. When I explained to the mother that it might be a little while before a doctor saw her because there were several more critical patients, she responded, "Take your time; it's warm in here and there is a Christmas tree."

Kathy's family vacation to the beach was usually the highlight of her summer. This year, however, her parents announced a new rule: no phones for the entire week.
"But my friends will be expecting updates about the trip, "Kathy complained. Kathy's mom gave her a serious look. Unwillingly, Kathy handed her phone over and her mom locked it away.
The drive to the beach house took most of the day. As they turned off the highway onto country back roads, the clouds darkened. Rain started to pour. "Even more beautiful in the rain," her mother said. " What do you think, Kathy " Kathy glared at her mom. "Beautiful, "she muttered.
That night after dinner, Kathy wandered into the kitchen, where her father was washing dishes. She gave her father a loving look and said in her sweetest voice, "Couldn't I have my phone back, just for one second Just so I can tell everyone what an amazing time I'm having "
"Can't, "he said. "It's not here. Remember " Kathy was very annoyed. Having nothing better to do, she examined the dusty bookcase in the living room. The books looked as dull as the weather. On the top shelf, however, she spotted a puzzle(拼图). She took it, emptied the pieces on the table, and began to sort them.
After what seemed like a few minutes, she looked up. It was past ten o'clock. She had been working for almost two hours! She yawned(打哈欠). The puzzle was less than half done, but she was exhausted. So, she went to bed.
When Kathy awoke the next morning, she jumped out of bed and threw open the curtains. A blazing sun was rising over the blue ocean. The sky was cloudless. The scene reminded Kathy of a photo that her friend Betty had recently sent her.
This view was even better. It would leave everyone speechless. Kathy dashed to her bedside table and reached for her phone. But there was nothing there. She sighed. Still, she wandered in front of the window, admiring the sunrise.

On a hot September afternoon, Peter and his friend Isabel were on their way to the library. When they passed by Tubman park, Isabel suggested cutting through it to get to the library. As they entered the park, the sight of the swings (秋千) and the merry-go-round brought back a flood of memories of their childhood spent there. But now everything looked so old, sad, and dirty. Litter lay on the ground next to an overflowing trash bin. There were still young schoolchildren playing there but they had to avoid the trash that littered the playground. A little boy told them that the city took the other trash cans away and the remaining one never got emptied often.
As they headed toward the library, the two high school students wrinkled their forehead. In the library, they encountered Mrs. Evans, their kind-hearted fifth-grade teacher, retired yet still passionate. Mrs. Evans listened as Isabel and Peter eagerly explained what they'd seen.
Finally, she recommended them to go to the City Hall to voice their concerns.
The next day, Isabel and Peter went into the building of the City Hall but were met with an impatient officer. They were informed that the city couldn't help with their problem due to a tight budget. Discouraged, they left and turned to Mrs. Evans for help.
Under her guidance, they decided to ask Go Green, a non-profit organization whose goal is to protect the environment, for help. "This group is good at raising money for projects just like yours," said Mrs. Evans. She promised to arrange them to present their ideas to Go Green. Hearing this, their face lit up.
Two main tasks remained ahead: researching ways to clean up the park and preparing a convincing presentation. As Isabel was good at researching while Peter always had a talent for speaking they cooperated quite well. Isabel learned from a science magazine that a new type of trash bin can squeeze the trash down without being emptied often, which saves time, money, and energy. Based on this, Peter practiced his presentation over and over again.

Amy loved to draw, and her hands, always dirty from the pencil lead, moved on the paper, showing the pictures in her mind. She would sit for hours, lost in art. Trees on her pages seemed to swing in an unseen wind, and the faces she drew wore lifelike expressions. But Amy didn't look like the art she made. Her clothes were old and had many patches (补丁) that her mother made with care. Amy's family did not have much money, but they loved each other very much. Her mother worked hard at many jobs to take care of them after Amy's father got sick and died.
Amy had her good times and hard times in school. She loved different corners of the school which were sources of her inspiration and expected the art lesson. Yet other kids' laughing at her dress made her sad. She wanted to change the situation, but didn't know how to go about it. Despite this, she would quietly help someone with a hard math problem or pick up garbage on her way home. She always found comfort in her drawing. In the middle of the term, an art contest on the theme of "My Dream" was to be held, which would select the top three winners, and the head teacher would award them prizes. This news thrilled the children, Amy in particular. They enthusiastically registered for the contest and, after thoughtful consideration, finished their own art pieces. The contest organizers gathered all submissions one week later and set up an exhibit showcasing every participant's work in the school gym.
The school gym was filled with viewers as the walls displayed the efforts of the young artists. There were paintings of colorful landscapes where the sun burst through thick clouds. Some students had created portraits (肖像) of their heroes. In this sea of creativity, one painting stood out. In the painting, a community garden was drawn, a place where people from all walks of life were planting seeds together. The heartfelt work drew the viewers into a world where every detail had meaning. The exhibition would last a week and all the students and teachers could vote their favorite work.

I grew up in a small town where the primary school was ten minutes' walk from my home. So I would rush back home for lunch.
One lunchtime when I was in the fourth grade will always be kept in my mind. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play. However, no matter how smoothly I read lines at home, the moment I stepped onstage, every word escaped me. Finally, my teacher took me aside, explaining in a kind voice, "I had written the narrator's(旁白) part in the play. Are you willing to change roles " I had to hold back tears as I nodded, watching helplessly my part go to another girl.
I felt too ashamed to tell my mother what happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed I was different, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.
It was a lovely spring day with the rose vine turning green. Under the huge tree, we could see bunches of yellow dandelions(蒲公英) in the grass as if a painter had touched our landscape with dabs of gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion. "I think I'm going to clear all the weeds(草)," she said, pulling it out by its roots. "You see, we'll have only beautiful roses in this garden."
"But I like dandelions," I protested. "All flowers are beautiful—even dandelions."
My mother looked at me seriously. "Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn't it " She asked thoughtfully. I gave her an approving nod, secretly pleased that the dandelions could survive my mom's weeding plan. "And that is true of people too," she continued. "Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that." Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I couldn't help breaking into tears.

1.答案:
A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. I was informed that I won the first prize in the writing contest and that there would be an award presentation in two days. I was so happy to hear the news that I immediately shared it with my teacher. "I knew you'd win! I am proud of you. You made it!" he said excitedly. Then came the big day. When I was invited to the stage to receive the award, I expressed my thanks to my teacher. I said, "It's you who make me fall in love with writing, my social studies teacher. Without your recognition and guidance, I couldn't have written this article. Again thank you very much!"
I went to my teacher's office after the award presentation. My teacher was waiting for me. Holding my hands, he said "Congratulations! You are a good writer, so keep writing." "You know I didn't like writing before, but now I am crazy about it! I will try my best to create good works." I said seriously. Since then, I have written many good works and now I am a famous writer. I owe my success to my social teacher who is a beacon in my life on the road to writing.
2. 答案:
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn't look at me. I quietly said, "David, if you don't want to run today, no one is going to force you. But the real question is whether you are going to let others stop you from doing something you really want to do. Are you willing to let them get in your way " I held my breath as David took my words in. Then he looked at the field and said with determination, "I decide to run."
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. As the starter's gun sounded, David lurched forward. But he had only run a few metres before he tripped and fell flat on his face. My heart sank. As I started to shout words of encouragement, other voices around me took up the call, "Come on, David!" Then, David picked himself up and started again. Finally, a small figure emerged from the forest. With heels kicking out to the side, David raised his arms as he crossed the finish line amid wild cheers and applause. At that moment, he caught my eye, flashed a toothy smile at me and said, "That was easy!"
3.答案:
Zaki and Farid went out into the sea until it was deep enough for them to dive. Then, at a signal, both dived beneath the waves. Zaki opened his eyes and looked at Farid, who was smiling with confidence. That smile made Zaki even more determined to win. Seconds ticked by with neither brother moving toward the surface. Slowly, the smile was fading from Farid's face, for he hadn't been expecting such serious competition. Time passing, there was a frown on Farid's face, which soon turned into a worried look. Farid realized that Zaki could possibly beat him.
Looking into Farid's eyes, Zaki suddenly understood what losing might mean to his brother. He would be teased about losing to a mere child. Looking at Farid's suffering, Zaki smiled. Thinking for a while, Zaki kicked his feet, rising to the surface of the water a second before Farid's head appeared beside him. The watchers cheered, patting Farid on the back. Farid, however, put his arm around Zaki's shoulders, announcing that Zaki was qualified. Meanwhile, he whispered, "Thank you." Then, both brothers had learned that it takes more than strength to make a man.

Then she turned and, with a smile, settled her kids in the waiting room. On seeing the appealing gifts in the Christmas tree, the kids were too excited to move an inch. All of a sudden, the youngest kid looked at her mom ,whispering, "Dear Mom, May I take one of the gifts in the tree I can't get any gift for many years." Upset and sorrowful, the guilty mother shook her head. The rest froze, eyes falling on their little sister. Realizing they were homeless, I went back and told my colleagues what had happened.
My colleagues, complaining about working Christmas, turned to sympathy for the homeless family. Immediately we were occupied preparing presents for the unexpected guests, who just wanted to stay warm on Christmas Day. With gifts in their hands, the kids couldn't hide their joy, whose laughter filled the waiting room. As they were leaving, the mother hugged each of us hard and tight, expressing her gratitude, "You're our angels and it's your love that warms us up!"
5.答案:
After a quick breakfast, Kathy headed to the beach. Under no circumstances had Kathy expected the scenery to be so spectacular! With the sea wind blowing against her face, Kathy totally lost herself in the stunning views. After half an hour's leisure walk along the beach, Kathy returned to the house. "How do I spend the rest of the day " Kathy murmured to herself. Suddenly, the unfinished puzzle caught her attention. She felt a little excited and buried herself in it once again. Every time the shapes met, Kathy was overwhelmed with happiness. Soon, all that were left were a few gaps. She quickly put the remaining pieces into place. The puzzle was completed!
Appreciating the finished puzzle, she realized she hadn't thought of her cellphone for hours. Trying to preserve the image in her mind, she quietly started taking it apart rather than taking pictures to update about the trip. That, she thought, was just for me. Without the distractions from her cellphone, she found herself engaged in story sharing session with mom and daddy willingly. They spent a high-quality family time together. On arriving home, mom gave her cellphone back. This time, however, she had no intention to share but to keep all the great memories in her mind. (189 words)
6.答案:
A week later, Peter stood nervously at the back of the hall where Go Green was meeting. Finally, it was time for him to do the presentation. Standing in front of several experts from Go Green, Peter was nervous in fear of screwing things up. But unbelievably, when he began to speak, everything went so smoothly. His voice was clear and influential, and his speech was logical and well-organized. Peter ended his presentation with a deep bow and went out to wait for Go Green's decision.
After the meeting, Isabel excitedly told Peter the good news. Their ideas were approved and Go Green agreed to provide the money they needed to purchase the trash bin. Peter smiled. It meant not only their efforts paid off, but also Tubman park would restore its cleanness and tidiness. Peter and Isabel decided to tell Mrs. Evans this good news first and then worked out the next step they needed to take.
7.答案:
Finally came the day when the winners were announced. The head teacher started with the third place winner followed by a boy in the second place. Then the students waited with bated breath for the first place winner to be announced. "First place goes to — Amy!" said the head teacher. After a moment of silence, the crowd clapped. Amy stepped onto the stage to accept the prize, shocked and delighted. When Amy explained her intention of spreading the idea of unity and hope, everyone was moved. After that, things changed.
The children who had laughed at Amy started to see her in a new way. They got to know the real Amy — her kindness and her dreams. She wasn't alone anymore. During breaks, kids crowded around her to see her create pictures, which made her classmates eager to try drawing with their own thoughts, too. Amy's art became well-known outside of school as well. A local gallery asked to exhibit her best painting. As Amy made more art, she became more confident. Her art changed her life and how others saw art and the world.
8.答案:
I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled reassuringly. "You will be a beautiful narrator," she encouraged, "The narrator's part is as important as the part of a princess." Wearing a shining smile, my beloved mother comforted me as always as she did. Her words reminded me of how much I loved to read stories aloud to her. Over the next weeks, with her constant encouragement, I learned to take pride in the role. Lunchtimes were spent reading over my lines painstakingly and talking about what I would wear.
Finally came the big day. Waiting backstage, I suddenly felt nervous, but it was at that very moment that I found a dandelion in my pocket. Looking at it, I knew my mother was out there for me, which calmed me down and brought me power. My performance turned out to be a great success. And I firmly believed the princess couldn't have won such thunderous applause without my beautiful narration. Since then, the dandelion, a gift from my mother, has always inspired me to be a confident girl.
