Looking for a big-leafed houseplant that will make a statement in your room and decorate yourhome If so, then you’ve come to the right place!
Peace Lily
Extremely easy to look after, this popular, flowering plant is very tolerant and undemanding. It is a beloved houseplant for its large, glossy oval leaves and unusual white spoon-shaped flowers. Typically blooming in the spring, this lovely plant can effectively brighten up a living space.
African Mask Plant
This indoor plant is a smaller plant with large dark green leaves that are shaped like a heart. Native to tropical (热带的) parts of Africa, it prefers high heat and high humidity. That can be somewhat a tricky task for the average plant owner to achieve in their home, who is likely to have trouble duplicating (复制) these steamy conditions.
Snake plant
Commonly referred to as mother-in-law’s tongue, it is one of the easiest houseplants to take care of. With tall, twisting sword-shaped leaves that grow upright, it has air-purifying capabilities and can merrily grow in almost dark corners of the house. But the plant is poisonous to dogs and cats, so it’s wise to keep this plant away from them, if your pets are plant chewers.
Kentia Palm
Caring for the Kentia Palm plant is very straightforward, which can be neglected for weeks at a time. Quite enjoying a bit of shade, it has big leaves that grow from a narrow base and is great for filling a corner without taking up much floor-space. Place it in front of a blank wall, and its archingfronds (大型复叶) will cast beautiful shadows.
1. Which of the following requires an experienced plant owner
A. Peace Lily.
B. African Mask Plant.
C. Snake plant.
D. Kentia Palm.
2. What do we know about the Snake Plant
A. It poses little danger to dogs and cats.
B. It is better for purifying air than others.
C. It gets its name from a poisonous snake.
D. It grows well in shady areas of the house.
3. What feature do the listed household plants share
A. Distinctive leaves.
B. Flowering season.
C. Growth temperature.
D. Striking size.

An 89-year-old man, Manfred Steiner, has reached a goal he spent 20 years working toward and nearly a lifetime thinking about: earning his Ph. D. And now he is a physicist
Steiner values this degree because it is what he always wanted and because he overcame health problems that could have affected his studies. “But I made it, and this was the most satisfactory point in my life, to finish it,” he said.
When he was young, Steiner wanted to become a physicist after reading about Albert Einstein. But his mother and uncle persuaded him that studying medicine would be a better choice. He earned his medical degree in 1955 and moved to the US soon after.
Steiner studied hematology(血液学)at Tufts University and biochemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He became a full professor and led the hematology department at Browns’ medical school from 1985 to 1994. Steiner helped establish a research program in hematology at the University of North Carolina. He directed that program until he retired from medicine in 2000.
Steiner found medical research pleasing, but it was not quite the same as his interest in physics. “It was something like a wish that was never fulfilled, that always stuck in the back of my head,” he said. At age 70, he started taking undergraduate classes.
Physics professor Brad Marston was surprised when Steiner entered his quantum mechanics class. But he became Steiner’s adviser for his dissertation(学位论文)after realizing how serious Steiner was about the subject and how hard he worked. “He has written many papers in medical science, more papers than I’ve written in physics,” Marston said. “One thing that’s really true about Manfred is that he perseveres.”
After the university published a story about Steiner on its website, people across the US contacted him to ask for advice on how to go after their dreams later in life. His advice is: Do what you love to do.
4. Why did Steiner value his degree in physics
A. Because it solved his health problems. B. Because it was his long-pursued dream.
C. Because it met his mother’s expectation. D. Because it was inspired by Albert Einstein.
5. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. Steiner’s contributions to teaching. B. Steiner’s researches after retirement.
C. Steiner’s achievements in hematology. D. Steiner’s performances at Tufts University.
6. What impressed Professor Marston most about Steiner
A. His taking undergraduate classes at 70. B. His writing more papers in physics.
C. His sticking to becoming a physicist. D. His being a role model for Americans.
7. Which of the following can best describe Steiner
A. Active and open-minded. B. Enthusiastic and easy-going.
C. Intelligent and warm-hearted. D. Perseverant and hard-working.
C
When I was five, I once peeled off the paper that enveloped my crayons and snapped them in two. My great enthusiasm was dampened to find just more crayon inside. When I started writing words with pencils, I would twist them inside a sharpener to see if the pencil lead went all the way through the body. Growing up, I saw my television taken apart to reveal the inner workings that only made sense when I did a degree in physics.
Then I landed a career in engineering, spending six years as part of the team that designed the Shard, a famous building in London. Actually, whether I knew it or not, I was already on a mission to understand how things are formed.
After exploring the big, I decided to turn to the small. I realized whatever matter forms human-made objects, complex devices are made up of fundamental building blocks, without which our complex machinery wouldn’t exist.
It is this idea that inspired my book where I select what I believe are seven core elements that form the basis of the world-the nail, the wheel, the spring, the magnet, the lens, the pump and the string. Together they compose a vast range of innovations in terms of their underlying (潜在的) scientific principles and the fields of engineering they touch. They’ve changed our technology, and had a sweeping impact on our history, arts, culture, communication, political and power structures, etc.
The blender we use to make baby’s food relies on gears (齿轮), which couldn’t exist without the wheel. The speaker on the phone relies on a magnet. Even when we think of larger and more complex objects-diggers, skyscrapers, satellites-we come back to the same seven foundational innovations.
So, look around you, and ask questions about what you see: reignite(重燃) that childhood curiosity. Hopefully, that will inspire you to investigate and lead you to a better understanding of the building blocks of our world.
8 Why does the author mention crayons in paragraph 1
A. To explain his choice of college major.
B. To demonstrate his fascination with tools.
C. To highlight his disappointment at the discovery.
D. To show his early passion for the insides of objects.
9. What made the author’s book possible
A. His experience in designing buildings.
B. His understanding of the origin of things.
C. His finding of the components of machinery.
D His perspective on the operation of the world.
10. What do we know about the seven core elements
A. They throw light on scientific principles.
B They have a profound influence on society.
C. They mark an era of technological innovation.
D. They represent the advancement in engineering.
11. What can be the best title for the text
A. Small Things That Count B. Big Dreams That Reward
C. Ask the Right Questions D. Understand Core Elements
D
Humans, by nature, have always lived in groups and social interaction is fundamental for every part of our health. Lack of it can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness. A strong support network and solid community bonds promote our emotional and physical health, and are critical components of a balanced adult life. However, just as with many other aspects of our lives, there seems to be a limit to how large our personal networks can grow.
Back in 1992, a British scholar named Robin Dunbar came up with a hypothetical (假设的) number defining the maximum sum of meaningful human relationships a person can have. The number, which was later named after him, was discovered accidentally while he was studying the cleaning and brushing tendencies — a social behavior —of non-human primates (灵长类动物). Around that time, researchers had discovered that the large brain of these primates was a result of their socially complex societies. The relevance was that the larger the brain, the larger the animal's social group was likely to be. Scientists could then theoretically use an animal's brain size to calculate how many members could make up this group. Dunbar applied this theory to humans, and the resulting number was roughly 150.
Dunbar's Number, however, only refers to the limit of meaningful contacts within our social network. It does not account for other relationships. Human social relationships tend to have numerous layers, and extend outward from the individual in circles with the same centre. The innermost circle contains five people: our loved ones. The next circle holds of our good friends. The third circle is reserved for people we consider friends, and the fourth is where the limit of 150 can be found. Nowadays, with various forms of electronic communication, such as websites for social networking and microblogging people find it very convenient to create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other contents. Consequently, it is possible for a human to get into the fifth (500acquainitances) circle, an impressive breakthrough that was difficult to achieve in the past.
12. What can be learned about Dunbar's Number in Paragraph 2
A. It is confirmed by the social reality.
B. It serves as an accurate measurement.
C. It is backed by a certain theoretical basis.
D. It establishes links between health and network.
13. Which of the following diagrams illustrates human social relationships
A. B.
C. D.
14. Why is it easy today to go beyond the fourth circle of human relationships
A. Human brains are becoming bigger and bigger.
B. Social media have contributed to the phenomenon.
C. Meaningful contacts grow significantly with age.
D. People are eager to improve every aspect of their lives.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Group Living: A Solution to Health Problems
B. Dunbar's Theory: A Ladder to Career Success
C. Social Network: A Soured of Endless Pleasure
D. Dunbar's Number: A Measure of Social Relations

There are only a few truly pleasant smells to wake up to in the morning. It might be the aroma of freshly baked bread, or the scent of your freshly brushed teeth—but for me, it’s the smell of freshly brewed coffee. ____16____
If you’re a big fan of coffee, you’ll understand that opening a new packet of coffee releases an amazing smell—fresh, roasted coffee beans. Delicious! And if you’ve got a nose for the stuff, you’ll be able to identify the beans’ origin - Colombia, Vietnam or Brazil—the world’s biggest coffee producer. Tim Hayward is a food writer and coffee shop owner. ____17____ “When you walk into the coffee shop in the morning and that smell hits you, you’re getting physiological(生理上的) responses, ” he told the BBC.
I know from experience when I walk into a café for my double espresso or flat white, my mouth begins to water in anticipation. ____18____
However, this feeling sometimes turns to disappointment when I actually start drinking my hot beverage—the taste just doesn’t match the smell.. This is particularly the case when I order a coffee to go in a tall paper cup and sip the liquid through a hole in the lid. ____19____
Tim Hayward describes this process as “weird” and “baffling”. He says, “You walk into the coffee shop, you get the smell, but when you actually take the drink out, you are drinking it from something that is designed to deliver the hot liquid directly past your tongue, but prevent any smell coming up to your nose.”
____20____ In 2011, it was estimated that 2.5 billion coffee cups were thrown away each year in the UK, and that figure is likely to be higher now. So maybe now is the time to really wake up and smell the coffee by drinking from a cup or mug in a café, chatting with friends and saving the planet.
A. He believes the smell is absolutely vital.
B. Coffee beans’ origin makes all the difference.
C. In a word, saving our planet is on the top of our agenda.
D. Yes, it’s convenient, but is it really the right way to appreciate it
E. As well as eliminating the smell, takeaway coffee cups create a lot of waste.
F. Although it’s the caffeine hit I’m after, it’s the smell that makes me feel good.
G. Just a sniff of it makes me jump out of bed and rush to the kitchen for a coffee.

I wanted to share with you my recent experience with the photography club from my school. Last Friday, we went to the park for a photo shoot and it was truly an amazing experience.
Our theme for the day was “nature and its beauty”. I captured various shots of the stunning landscapes, vibrant flowers, and serene ponds. One of my favorite photos is a close-up of a butterfly perched on a petal, with its delicate wings spreading wide against the vibrant background.
It was a great opportunity for me to connect with nature and express my creativity. I feel truly grateful to be part of this photography club and I can’t wait for our next adventure.
Yours,
Li Hua
