As a country strong in math, China has many folk games filled with math wisdom. You may have played many of them before. Let’s take a look at two of them.
Luban Lock Luban Lock was first created by Chinese carpenter Lu Ban about 2,000 years ago. It is said that Lu used six wooden pieces to make a toy that looks like a lock for his son. The lock has a lot to do with solid geometry (立体几何). It’s hard to separate the six pieces. However, it is usually easier to unlock a Luban Lock than to put it back together. Now, there are Luban Locks made up of nine or more pieces.
Huarong Pass Huarong Pass is a traditional Chinese block-moving puzzle. Every block is named after a character in the book Romance of the Three Kingdoms, like Cao Cao, Zhang Fei and Zhao Yun. To succeed in the game, players have to move the blocks to get “Cao Cao” out. This is a test of one’s math knowledge, for example, of geometric area (几何面积). According to the Chinese Puzzle website, it takes at least 81 steps to set “Cao Cao” free.

The warm climate, water plants and wetland in nature reserves provide an ideal living environment for wild animals. This makes them feel like going back to nature. In reserves, people watch and study animals’ living habits, activities and so on.
Now, the AI system in reserves plays an important role in studying wildlife. Instead of using binoculars, people just sit in front of a big screen and then they can watch every move the animals make. The AI system helps in many ways. First, the AI system can tell the differences between different types of wild animals and record the changes in numbers based on their tails, feet and beaks. Second, it can keep recording animal behaviours for researchers day and night, while in the past, such recording could not last. Moreover, it can check unusual behaviours among the animals. If an animal walks or flies in an unusual way or lies on the ground for a while, the system can help find out what happens. So researchers can take quick actions to save it in time. Besides its main functions, the system can help to warn the unauthorized(未经许可的)people away from the protected areas. The AI system is also served as an educational platform(平台)for the people. By using it, visitors can watch and learn more about the wild animals living in the reserve.
However, there are problems. On one hand, the AI system itself sometimes mistakes an animal for another, or a plant for an animal. On the other hand, people still need to go around to get a whole understanding of wildlife because the AI system has not been put in at every corner of the reserves. To further develop the AI system, the reserves are now working with more high-tech companies.

It is also a mix of many art forms, including painting, music, opera and story-telling. Shadow puppetry was added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2011.
More than 2,000 years ago, Emperor Wu of Han was very sad about the death of his wife. One day, one of his men happened to see some children playing with toys. The shadows of the toys were lively on the floor. Then he had an idea— he made a puppet(偶)of the emperor’s wife. As night fell, he invited the emperor to watch a puppet show. This is believed to be the start of shadow puppetry.

Then in the Yuan Dynasty, it was introduced into West Asian and European countries along the Silk Road. The art form became the most popular in the Qing Dynasty. At that time, it was played in almost every province and in many kinds of celebrations like weddings and birthday dinners.
It is not an easy job to make the puppets. Their body parts are cut separately and then joined together so that they an move freely. During the show, puppetry artists connect the puppets’ most important joints(关节)with sticks. In this way, they can hold the puppets and make the puppets walk, run or dance as they want. Sometimes the puppets could be as lively as living things on the screen.
In fact, most puppetry artists across China don’t get trained and don’t play shadow puppetry as a job. They just play it for fun and love. However, they are still experts(专家)in this field. In recent years, puppetry artists have explored ways to make this ancient art form as popular as it used to be and pass it on to the young, hoping more people can understand its importance and feel its beauty. What Are Visuals
Visuals are the images or pictures that you see in different forms of mass communication such as television, the Internet, and magazines. Think about what the picture suggests. Suppose an article is about crime, and the picture shows a young person. Does that suggests that young people are the worst criminals or that lots of young people are criminals Do the facts in the article back up what the picture or pictures suggest

Black rice culture started from the Tang Dynasty(618-907). It is believed that children who eat black rice will not be bitten by insects and will be fit the whole summer.
Weighing people: Local people of Banshan developed the interesting tradition of weighing people on this day to check the changes in their bodyweight over the past year. People of all ages take part in the activity. Locals believe that people who weigh themselves on this day will not only have good luck, but also guard against weight loss during the coming summer.
Egg fights: Children are undoubtedly crazy about this game. With a boiled egg, each child tries to break the egg of their competitor. Whoever’s egg breaks first is the loser, and needs to eat the egg as a punishment. The champion in the game is awarded the title of “Egg King”.

People use colour expressions to show their feelings and describe the world. Many colour-related phrases are common in our speech. Let’s see where they came from.
The Blues
The phrase is a short form of “the blue devils”, which also stands for sad feelings. This expression is also used to describe a type of jazz music that became popular in the south of America in the 1940s.
Black Sheep of the Family
The phrase refers to a member of a family or a group who is unacceptable. In the old days, the black sheep were sold at a lower price than the white ones at the market, because their fleece(羊毛)could not be coloured. This made the black sheep an unwelcome member of the group.
A Red-letter Day
A Red-letter Day is a day when something really exciting and memorable(难忘的)happens. It came from the practice of marking special western days, holidays, or other festivals in red on the calendar. Today, some calendars still use red numbers for special holidays, even weekends.
Green with Envy
Writers such as Shakespeare in the 16th century used the colour green to stand for envy, but it was the Greeks who connected it with sickness caused by envy. When a person was full of envy, his or her body produced too much bile(胆汁), giving his or her skin a greenish colour. That is green with envy.

The folk art form, kuaiban, which has a long history, can be performed by a group or a single person. With one or two pairs of bamboo clappers—a kind of traditional Chinese musical instrument in their hands, the performers tell stories in the local dialect(方言). These stories are usually folk tales or about social life.
Recently, Liu Jiming and Wan Yifu made and shared three short videos by using kuaiban which were viewed about 4 million times. According to Liu and Wan, people can understand kuaiban pieces without difficulty. The stories told in kuaiban pieces are close to people’s daily lives. Thus, they consider that it is a fun way to introduce the Chinese folk culture through kuaiban. And what matters to them is that both young people and old people begin to know the charm of the art form, kuaiban, which may not be paid much attention to, compared to other traditional art forms.

Is your house full of clutter(杂物)which seems useful but you never use Do you feel crazy when you can’t find something you want, standing in a messy room Items satisfy you but at the same time too many of them may also trouble you. Many people feel stressed by the amount of things they have. But it doesn’t have to be that way. With a little bit of organization and planning on decluttering(清理), you can create a comfortable space.
Start early. If you wait until the weekend to start, you’re not going to make much progress. You’d better start right now. The earlier you start, the more organized you will be during the decluttering.
Keep your eyes on one room at a time. This will help your mind stay clear during a certain period of time. Start with the room that needs the most attention. If you have a lot of clutter in the room, start from smaller areas like your desk, since breaking down the huge task into smaller goals can reduce much stress in your mind.
Donate unwanted items. Decluttering can make your life easy especially when you have unwanted items. You can donate them to someone who really needs them. It makes your home tidier. And more importantly, it also makes those items go exactly to the right person instead of staying useless in your house.
Classify(归类)the items. This follows donation. After classifying your things, an important part which can’t be left over is to label(贴标签)the box. On the label, write the type of the items and the place it should be put in. Yes, it takes extra time, but you’ll be thankful soon after your items go to correct places, which helps you find what you need easily next time.
Don’t decide everything now. Decluttering does make your house look better. But if you try to declutter every little thing in your house, the result may not satisfy you. Once you are not sure whether something still works for you, but you really like it, it’s OK to keep it. Don’t over declutter and end up with buying them again.

In his lovely piece of writing “Why Write ”, the writer Paul Auster shares a story about growing up as an eight-year-old in New York City. He was crazy about baseball, especially the New York Giants. The only thing he remembers about attending his first major league baseball game is that he saw his hero Willie Mays after the game. The young Auster gathered his courage and went close to his hero. “Mr. Mays,” he said, “could I please have your autograph (签名) ”
“Sure, kid, sure,” Mays replied kindly. “Have you got a pencil ”
Auster didn’t have a pencil on him, neither did his father or his mother or anyone else in his group.
Mays waited patiently, but when it became clear that no one present had anything to write with, he said, “Sorry, kid. We’ve got no pencil. I can’t give you my autograph.”
From that day on, Auster made it a habit to never leave the house without a pencil in his pocket. “It’s not that I had any special plans for that pencil,” Auster writes, “but I didn’t want to be unprepared. I had been caught empty-handed once, and I wasn’t about to let it happen again. The years have taught me this: If there’s a pencil in your pocket, there’s a good chance that one day you’ll feel like starting to use it. That’s how I became a writer.”

A total of 23 spotted seals(斑海豹)were put back into the waters off the coast of Dalian in Northeast China’s Liaoning Province on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2023 as part of China’s continuous efforts to protect endangered wildlife.
The seals were hunted and sold, but have now been saved and marked for future protection. A fishery law enforcement ship arrived at the sea area near Dalian in the morning, carrying the spotted seals. The seals were let go free one by one into the sea. They swam freely in the water, returning to their natural home.
Spotted seals are nationally protected animals in China. They are the only kind of seals that can breed(繁殖) in Chinese waters. Like migratory(迁徙的)birds, they appear around October every year in Liaodong Bay, and take the long journey back to the Northwest Pacific in May after breeding. They are often considered as the “panda of the sea”.
Thanks to China’s top-class national protection in recent years, the population of spotted seals in Chinese waters has reached around 2,000, while the global population is between 400,000 and 600,000. Studies have shown that these 2,000 spotted seals are of great importance for the study and research on spotted seals.
To protect this rare animal and its ecological environment, the Liaoning Dalian Spotted Seal Wetlands were set up in 1992. In January 2002, they were included in the List of Wetlands of International Importance. Covering an area of 560,000 hectares with a coastline of about 370 kilometers, the wetlands are rich in biological resources. They have become home to nationally protected animals such as the spotted seal, finless porpoise, killer whales, false killer whales, common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and East Asian river dolphins.
Since 1992, researchers in Dalian have successfully saved 388 spotted seals and put 299 of them back into the wild.

Karlsson, a Swedish teacher at Beijing Union University(BUU), has lived in China for over 15 years. The seeds(种子)of his China journey were sown when he joined in a program for East Asian studies at Lund University in Sweden in 1997. Back then, cellphones and the Internet hadn’t yet come into wide use. Learning Chinese meant using textbooks, heavy dictionaries and audio tapes. He would read the dictionary carefully for hours to understand a one-page Chinese article.
“In those days, it was a real challenge,” he said.
In 2006, with a high score in the official Chinese language test, he won a scholarship for a five-week summer program at Beijing Language and Culture University.
After finishing the study program, Karlsson was offered a Beijing-based job as a market researcher. In 2008, the year Beijing succeeded in hosting the Summer Olympic Games, he got married. In the next year, he started to teach business at BUU.
Life in Beijing has been a wonderful adventure(异乎寻常的经历), especially as a witness to the great achievements China has made. It has offered him many chances for personal growth. Today, thanks to high-speed broadband and 5G, he can connect with students at BUU’s partner universities in Russia, Montenegro or Mexico while riding on the Beijing subway.
“When you open your eyes to these great projects, it is impossible not to want to be part of them or at least support them somehow,” he said.
Although he was busy on teaching days, Karlsson applied for a full-time scholarship at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing. In 2022, at 44 years old, he got his Ph.D. in economics. “I am quite interested in blockchain technology, and I know that China is quickly becoming the leader in blockchain applications outside the cryptocurrency space. So, I always write my articles in this area,” he said.
“There is always time to follow your dreams unless you decide to give up,” he said. “Taking on seemingly impossible challenges and also helping those around you are what makes life worth living.”

To succeed in the game, players have to move the blocks to get “Cao Cao” out. This is a test of one’s math knowledge, for example, of geometric area (几何面积).

Chinese shadow puppetry(皮影戏)is a form of traditional Chinese folk drama. It is probably one of the most ancient arts using light and shadow.
In the Tang Dynasty, shadow puppetry was played by many people in many places around the country.
They also get support from the Chinese government. Thanks to their hard work, Chinese shadow puppetry is becoming great again.

What Are Visuals
Visuals are the images or pictures that you see in different forms of mass communication such as television, the Internet, and magazines. When you look at visuals in media, you make a judgement of what you see-either you like it, or you don’t. How do you respond(回应)to picture of a sleeping kitten is different from how you respond to a picture of a roaring tiger.
Why Are Visuals Important
Pictures are powerful. They appeal to(吸引)our minds, our feelings, and our imaginations. Looking at a picture carefully can help you notice more details and get more information. You may also see things that entertain you or make you laugh. At the same time, learning to look at a picture carefully can help you make up your own mind about things. Otherwise, a picture may make you think things that are not true.
How Do I Do It
Here are some ways to evaluate(评价)visuals:
Look at all the parts of the picture. If there are people, look at expressions(表情). Look at how they are standing or sitting. If a picture shows an activity, imagine the movement it shows.
Look at the colours in a picture. If they are dark, they may make you feel sad, even if what the picture shows is not particularly sad. A dark picture of a person may make you like that person less.
Think about what the picture suggests. Suppose an article is about crime, and the picture shows a young person. Does that suggests that young people are the worst criminals or that lots of young people are criminals Do the facts in the article back up what the picture or pictures suggest
View to Learn
Analyze(分析)the advertisement on this page.

As a result, Liu and Wan have gained more than 1million followers on the Internet. They’ve created many new works to raise people’s awareness. Some of their works are about the danger of drunken driving and food safety. They also write stories to show respect to people who make contributions, such as traffic policemen.
Folk art forms, like xiangsheng, pingshu and kuaiban, share something in common. These traditional art forms show the beauty and value of traditional Chinese culture so they should be known by more people and get to more areas. Luckily, through the Internet, new performers who go on sharing kuaiban pieces, like Liu and Wan are playing an active role. Hopefully these Chinese folk art forms will be alive with the times.

根据上面短文内容填空(每空不限一词)

What is your pencil What is so important that without it you feel unprepared I know some cartoonists always carry pen and paper and some photographers always have a camera in their pockets. They are always prepared.

Roberta woke up early the next morning. Then she woke up Phyllis and Peter. “We’re in the new house. There are no servants here. We must help Mother now,” whispered Roberta.
Carefully the three children lit the fire and filled a kettle(水壶)with water. They hung the kettle above the fire.
“Mother isn’t awake yet. Let’s go outside and sit on that flat stone,” said Roberta. “Perhaps we will see a train go by.”
When Mother came out at eight o’clock, Roberta, Peter and Phyllis were all fast asleep in the sunshine. They had put the kettle on the fire at five o’clock: three hours ago. All the water had boiled away(烧干). Now there was a hole in the bottom of the kettle. The fire had gone out.
“Never mind,” laughed Mother. “We can boil some water in a pan. And I’ve found the dinner.”
She led them into the kitchen and pointed to a door.
“Last night, I thought this was a cupboard. It was so dark. But look,” she said.
Mother opened the door and the children saw a little room with a table in the middle. On it there was roast beef, bread and butter, cheese and an apple pie.
“Apple pie for breakfast,” cried Peter. “What fun!”
It was a wonderful breakfast. Everyone was very hungry.
“It feels like dinner because we were up so early,” said Peter, as he passed his plate for more apple pie.
When the children had finished, they helped Mother put everything away in the right place.
Then Mother said, “I’m tired. I’m going to lie down for a while. Go out to play but please be careful.”
Roberta, Peter and Phyllis looked at each other. They were all thinking the same thing.
“Let’s go down to the railway,” cried Roberta.
“Listen!” said Phyllis. “I think I can hear a train.”
Peter asked, “Do you think it’s going to London ”
“Father is in London,” replied Roberta. “Let’s go to the station and find out.”

Before 1970, few laws protected the environment. Then on April 22 that year, Earth Day was created to celebrate our planet, tell people about environmental problems, and encourage them to take action. Now Earth Day is celebrated all around the world. We still face many challenges, such as climate(气候) change, plastic pollution, and deforestation(毁林). But we can make a difference. Here is an Earth-helping hero.
Adeline Tiffanie Suwana was twelve when her family’s home flooded. Indonesia, her island nation in South-east Asia, is often hit hard by floods and other natural disasters.
Adeline wanted to help. Studying the problem, she learned that mangrove trees play an important role in flood protection. Their big, tangled(缠结的)roots slow floodwaters and keep soil from washing away. But the trees were being cut down.
Adeline gathered her classmates to plant 200 mangrove young trees during a school break. They started a group called Friends of Nature, which works to keep the area’s biodiversity(生物多样性), fight against climate change, and help people realize the importance of the environment. They even started a project to get clean energy to remote villages.
Today, Adeline attends college, studying how businesses can help the environment.

Xing Yifan and his parents were very excited when they knew that Xing had a chance to study at Beihang University with a score of 645. It would be a great challenge for most high school graduates(毕业生)to get such a high score, especially for the 18-year-old boy.
Xing was born in Jilin Province in 2003. His family were happy with his coming and did not notice anything wrong until he was three months old.
“When we took him for photos in the studio, the photographer told us our son wasn’t able to do the same things other kids of his age could. He advised us to take him to the hospital for a check,” said his father Xing Dacheng.
“Although we were psychologically(心理上地)prepared, we never imagined our son would grow up with such a condition. And the doctors told us there was no useful way of treatment,” Xing’s father said.
When relatives and friends heard the news, they advised the couple to have another baby. But Xing’s parents decided to pour all their love and care into their son.
“Yifan is an angel who came to our family. He might have broken wings, but we would never give him up,” the father said.
Xing Yifan got the highest score in his school for the senior high school entrance examination in 2018. To prepare for Gaokao, he studied even harder from the day he started at Jilin No. 1 Senior High School.
He seldom went to bed before midnight, especially in the third year. To avoid bringing trouble to others, he drank less water at school to lower(减少)his need to go to the toilet.
Unluckily, he got hurt several months ago, so he had to stay at home. After three months, he came back to school, and to his teachers’ surprise, he made great progress instead of falling behind his classmates.

Imagine you are walking through deep snow. As you walk, you leave footprints where you’ve been. That’s what happens when using technology, such as computers, mobile phones and tablets. You leave your digital footprint and it will never disappear.
Here are reasons why your digital footprint should matter to you.
How people see you
Of course, you have nothing to hide, but if people get information about you, they might judge you from the information you have left online. For example, you make a bad joke online. Years later, it’s found by the university you are applying to, and they don’t think it’s funny. Maybe they decide you are not the “right” kind of person for them,
Your private information
Not everything can be shared with everyone. For example, you might share your school reports with your parents, but keep them secret to your e-friends. If you share them on the Internet, they will not be a secret anymore. Therefore, to protect your privacy(隐私), remember to put out less information online.
Keeping your money safe
There are plenty of people looking at information about you, and some of them want to steal from you. So you shouldn’t write bank details, card numbers or passwords in emails or text messages.
Overall, the message is: No one can go online without leaving his digital footprint—but with care, you can control it.

A library is a place to keep books and store knowledge. Recently libraries are not as popular as before because people prefer to use the Internet to find out information, rather than books. With a click of a mouse, it is possible to find out almost anything people care to know.
But being in a room that is full of books is a fantastic thing. Just think about how many words there are in a library. Each of those words has been thought of, and carefully chosen, by tens of thousands of people. That must make it a special place to be.
Maybe all kinds of things can happen in libraries. Sometimes, you see that a library is used for poetry workshops or guitar lessons. Also, they may have writers visiting and talking about their books. All of these activities are much better because they are in a library.
Lots of schools have libraries. If your school has a library, it’s probably not just a place to read books. Libraries are also quiet places to be. They are calmer than the playground or the dining hall. It’s the books that keep us calm and peaceful.

A teenager with autism swims toward victory
Chen Xingrong won five medals, including a gold, at the 11th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 8th National Special Olympics Games.
Born in Hainan Province, Chen Xingrong could not say a word until he was 2 years old. When Chen Xingrong was found autistic(自闭的), his parents were worried. In 2012, his father learned that swimming could help people with autism, so he spent months learning how to swim by watching videos and reading books. When Chen Xingrong was 5 years old, he began to teach him how to swim. At the very beginning, he spent three months teaching his son, but all his efforts failed. To his surprise, after another three months, he discovered that his son had developed the ability to control his breath under water, which greatly increased his confidence, and swimming soon became a key activity of the family. His father planned all his exercises for him at first, but then it was all up to him. He decided how many exercises he wanted to do, and his parents respected his choices. It was a process of self-management. With his father’s help as well as his good self-management and perseverance, he succeeded in winning many medals in the swimming competitions.
As well as swimming, learning basic life skills is also an important part of life for a teenager with autism. His father hopes that his son can live well on his own when he and his wife grow old. To help the public to know more about autistic people so as to reduce misunderstanding, he once organized about 500 people to watch an autism-themed film.
Thanks to his father’s endless efforts, Chen Xingrong has learned to buy food in the market in their neighborhood. He also does voluntary jobs at supermarkets and fast-food restaurants, such as arranging shelves and cleaning dining tables. “He is good at skillfully arranging things. You don’t know me unless you read a book called The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Huck’s my name, Huckleberry Finn. That book ends like this: my best friend, Tom Sawyer, and I found $12,000 in gold in a cave. We became rich. We got $6,000 each.
My mother died long ago and then my dad, Pap, disappeared. He was always drunk and he often beat me. Then a kind old lady called Widow Douglas took me into her home to live. She gave me a bed to sleep in and bought new clothes for me. She read stories to me and taught me how to eat at a table. She sent me to school every day.
I hated those new clothes. I missed my old life. I put on my old clothes and ran away and was free and happy, but Tom Sawyer found me and said that if I wanted to join his club, I would have to return to live with the widow. For this reason, I returned to live with her.
The months passed and winter came. The weather got cold. One morning I woke up and there was snow on the ground. On my way to school I saw some footprints outside the widow’s house. My heart jumped. Pap!
“He’s heard about my money,” I thought. “And he wants it! ”
When I lit my candle and went up to my room that night, there sat Pap—his own self! I expected to be scared of him now, but I wasn’t. I stood looking at him; he set there—looking at me.
Pap was nearly fifty years old. His black hair was long and uncombed and dirty. He had allowed hair to grow on his face, which was ghostly white. Just looking at the ugly white skin made me feel sick. His clothes —dirty and torn. His feet showed through large holes in his shoes. His hat was on the floor—an old black hat with a large hole in it.

Chinese traditional painting and dance are two important parts of the art world. But what about when they meet each other
This year, a dance drama called Poetic Dance: The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting(《只此青绿》)was shown on CCTV’s Spring Festival Gala. It became popular overnight.
According to CCTV, this poetic dance got the idea from the 900-year-old Chinese painting A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains(《千里江山图》). Created by Song Dynasty painter Wang Ximeng at about 18, the painting is amazing in its sweeping size, rich coloration and expressive details. It shows a Chinese blue-green landscape: “mountains and groupings of endless rise and fall between cloudless sky and rippling water”.
A The dance shows the Chinese traditional beauty of the painting. The dancers each had a different hairstyle, which looked like a mountain rock. B The clothes that they wore were shades of green and blue, which is also poetic show of the mountains and rivers. C When the dancers swayed beautifully, the audience seemed to be looking at the moving mountains and rivers. D More than a thousand years later, green mountains and rivers still wow people as they did long ago.
In recent years, more and more modern shows highlight Chinese traditional culture and have received warm welcome, especially among young people. They show _______ Chinese culture and are proud of it.

Have you ever tasted a kind of snack, which is also of the traditional Chinese of forms of art—sugar painting.
Sugar painting started from the Ming Dynasty and became popular in the Qing Dynasty. At that time, many people made a living through sugar painting, setting up stalls(货摊)in crowded streets, in front of theatres and busy public places. And now it can still be found in many areas of China.
The sugar painters usually sit before a wooden table. On the side, there is a wooden plate with a revolvable arrow(可旋转箭头)on it. The plate is painted with different pictures such as a dragon, a bird, a flower and so on. After paying, the customers turn the arrow and wait till it stops. The picture pointed by the arrow is the one the painters will make.
Sugar painting is very different from normal painting. The sugar painters use syrup(糖浆)as the material, a spoon as the “paintbrush”, and a smooth slab(台面)as the “paper”. To make the syrup, they have to make sugar hot before painting. Since the syrup may become solid(固体的)if it cools, the painters have to produce the work very quickly. They move the spoon full of the syrup up and down, left and right. Soon a sugar painting of an animal, a flower or a bike is done.
The number of sugar painters is getting smaller. However, some of them still insist on this art. They make their efforts to hold different activities such as offering classes and giving speeches. Now, sugar painting has already been listed as National Non-Material Culture Heritage.
