二、阅读理解
It was decades ago now, but it's still one of the most memorable conversations of my life. On a long, slow train heading north, with nothing to do but watch the rain, the man sitting opposite began trying to talk to me. Like most young women who have learnt the hard way to be careful of strangers, I was unfriendly. But curiosity took over when he said that he was just bored, and liked talking.
So that's what we did for hours and hours as the man turned out to be quite talkative. When the train finally pulled in, we didn't swap numbers. However, I still think about it sometimes on long, boring journeys, before getting a phone out and scrolling silently like everyone else. It's a rare person' who can cheerfully break the social rule about not talking to strangers without any ill intention, but life would be more interesting if more of us knew how to do it.
And that's why I can't be in a position to query "Tube Chat" campaign launched to encourage Britons to talk to each other. All anyone is being asked to do is to start a conversation they wouldn't otherwise have had—maybe with a friend from whom they've been apart or a neighbour they don't know.
Obviously, it takes more than a bit of small talk over garden fences to unite strangers together. More people live alone than did so a generation ago, and the rise in freelancing (从事自由职业) means more of us work alone too. We socialise increasingly through screens, sending texts instead of bothering to call.
It's true that the "Tube Chat" campaign of a few years back failed in its attempts to make Londoners talk to each other on public transport. But even city people who would normally die rather than make eye contact with strangers still happily gather in large numbers by the Thames for the New Year's Eve fireworks. They would get a far better view at home on television—it's not really about the fireworks, but about being part of something communal(群体的).
There's no guarantee that this latest campaign to reconnect will succeed wherever others have failed. But if there ever is a moment to stop social disbelief it may start a fire to warm a world that sometimes feels cold. Wherever my train friend is now, I hope he's still talking.
11.Why does the author introduce her train friend
A. To share her most memorable but boring journey.
B. To express her deep regret for losing touch with him.
C. To show that talking to strangers can add interest to life.
D. To explain why people are becoming indifferent.
12.What does the underlined part "in a position to query" in Paragraph 3 mean
A. In doubt about. B. In support of.
C. In confusion about. D. In disappointment with.
13.The example of Londoners gathering for the New Year's Eve fireworks is used to show that _____.
A. "Tube Chat" failed in its attempts to unite strangers together
B. it's hard to break the social rule about not talking to strangers
C. people have a wish to be socially connected by nature
D. "Tube Chat" made some difference to reconnecting people
14.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A. Keep Our Desire to Connect B. Avoid Talking to Strangers

二、阅读理解
In a recent staff meeting, my colleagues and I discussed ways to ease the current stress our 11th-grade students were feeling. I offered a successful strategy that I use for organising work in the classroom—negotiating (协商) due dates. The assistant replied, “Yes, a good idea, being flexible with due dates.” Flexible That was not the word I used, and to me, those two words are not interchangeable; flexibility and negotiation are not the same thing.
Being flexible can help decrease stress and anxiety in the classroom. It shows willingness on the part of the teacher to listen, engage in conversation with students, and shift and adapt when possible. But the power dynamic (动态) has not really shifted. The student still needs to ask for permission, which may or may not be given. In a week when my work seems manageable, I may be feeling generous, but in a week when my workload is high, I may be less likely to lean towards flexibility. So flexibility might mean an extra hour, half a day, or a few days.
In either case the student has no power. In many ways, by the time students reach the stage of having to ask, it's too late. The stress has already increased, and students are placed in a position where they may make poor decisions, like skipping classes, to get some extra time.
Negotiation is different. It happens at the beginning of the process and is a proactive approach that encourages shared ownership, an acceptance of equal responsibility. Negotiating brings the teacher and students together to address the issue equally. The date by which work will be done is a question for all, but the student does need to do the work, and the teacher needs to assess it. There are competing needs and schedules and workloads.
Sometimes even the smallest things are worth considering carefully. In teaching, there is nothing small. As a teacher, I usually self-reflect my practice, and strengthen my practice.
11.What does the author think of the assistant's reply
A. It is a convincing statement. B. It is a wrong interpretation.
C. It is a detailed description. D. It is a positive response.
12.What is the author's opinion of being flexible
A. It makes the students feel free. B. It is a win-win choice in class.
C. It is a strategy to remove stress. D. It allows the teacher the final say.
13.How does negotiation work according to the author
A. By encouraging competition among students.
B. By helping teachers assess their responsibility.
C. By creating harmony and equality in the class.
D. By providing a way to reduce students' workload.
14.What can we infer about the author from the text
A. She is expert at arguing with others.
B. She is committed to her teaching work.
C. She is worried about the current education.
D. She is doubtful about the assistant's ability.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 20 percent of children aged 13—18 suffer from a mental health condition. Those are the same years when they are likely to be in school and spending most of their time with teachers and fellow students.
With the right support in place, these students might make the most of educational opportunities in order to reach their full academic potential. Yet, most students who may be dealing with a mental health condition are likely not receiving any treatment. Studies estimate more than 60 percent are not receiving services or treatment from medical or psychological service providers.
One might think, now that teachers, school psychologists (心理学家) and other educational professionals spend a lot of time with students, they could be one key way to identify children who are at risk of different conditions—and get them the help they need. But, for one, those working in the educational field are often already understaffed and overworked. Frequently, a school teacher or school psychologist may be responsible for hundreds, if not thousands of students. And, two, teachers and other staff lack the clinical(临床的) training to properly identify a true mental health condition.
In an ideal world, teachers and other staff who interact with students the most would receive extra training to help identify at-risk individuals and then direct them to the school nurse or psychologist for a treatment. Although one in five children may suffer from a mental health condition, with the right state of mind and methods, it is possible for families and schools to work together to make sure at-risk children are getting the care they need.
11.What is most needed for the children suffering from a mental health condition
A. Equal educational opportunities.
B. More company with their teachers.
C. Guidance on achieving academic potential.
D. Timely mental and psychological treatment.
12.Which word can replace "understaffed" underlined in Paragraph 3
A. Shorthanded. B. Frustrated. C. Occupied. D. Responsible.
13.How does the author develop Paragraph 3
A. By giving examples. B. By listing causes.
C. By concluding rules. D. By making comparison.
14.What suggestion does the author give to teachers and other staff
A. Getting extra training. B. Being more friendly.
C. Communicating with families. D. Showing understanding.

二、阅读理解
Many studies have shown the learning-by-teaching effect. Students who spend time teaching what they've learnt show better understanding and ability to remember knowledge than students who simply spend the same time re-studying. But why does teaching help
Researchers did a study to test their theory that teaching improves the teacher's learning because it forces the teacher to find back what they've learnt. They asked 124 students to spend ten minutes studying a text about a topic which is completely new to them. They told the students they could take notes while studying, but would teach the material afterwards without notes. After studying the text, the students were divided into four groups. In one group the students spent five minutes giving a lesson on the study material without notes. The other groups either spent the same time completing arithmetic (算术运算); teaching with a set script(讲稿); or writing down all they could remember from the text—a form of retrieval (检索) practice. A week later, all the students took a surprise test on their knowledge and understanding of the text.
The important finding is that the teaching-without-notes group and the retrieval-practice group performed better than the group that completed arithmetic problems and the group that taught with a script.
The researchers said the results show that the benefits of the learning-by-teaching strategy are caused by retrieval practice; that is, the learning-by-teaching strategy works but only when the teaching involves retrieving the taught materials.
The new findings have a practical suggestion for how the learning-by-teaching method is used in education. In order to make sure that students learn and remember an educational material, they should internalise (使内在化) the material before presenting it to others, rather than depend on notes during the presentation process.
