形容词、副词的最高级用于三个或三个以上的人或事物之间的比较，常用of/in短语来说明比较的范围。
形容词最高级前要加定冠词the，副词最高级前的the可省略。

注意
1.如果其前有形容词性物主代词或名词所有格等修饰语时, 则不再用定冠词the。
如：Her youngest daughter is eleven years old.
2.比较范围用短语（介词in或of短语）或从句。一般情况下, 如果主语与介词短语中的名词属于同一类, 用介词of; 如果不是同一类, 则用介词in。
如：Tina is the most outgoing in her family.
Jim jumps (the) highest of all the boys.
The dog is the best present that I have ever received.

形容词、副词最高级的变化规则
形容词、副词的最高级构成方法：
1. tall, short, fast, clever, hard
一般在词尾加-est。
2. nice, large, fine, close
以字母e结尾在词尾加-st。
3. thin, fat, big, hot, wet
以重读闭音节结尾，末尾只有1个辅音字母应双写该字母后加 -est。
4. busy, heavy, early, happy
以辅音字母加y结尾，改y为i加-est。
5. slowly, useful, popular, comfortable
大多数双音节和多音节词是在原级前加most。

除上述四种特殊变化外，还有两个词的比较级、最高级变化有两副面孔，当其翻译成不同意思时，有不同的变化方式：

作表语“比……大”：old—older—oldest
作定语修饰其他名词：old—elder—eldest
