Jiang Shumei learned her first Chinese character at the age of 60. Now, the 87-year-old grandmother is the proud author of six books.
She learned her first character in 1996, after her husband died in a devastating car accident, when her daughter Zhang Ailing suggested that she learn to read to take her mind off the loneliness and sadness.
The elderly woman bad her own way of learning. She composed lyrics for songs, and asked children to write them down, so that she could read each character as she sang the songs again and again. Whenever she came across characters she didn’t know on pamphlets, bus stops, or shop signs, she found someone to ask.

The Himalayan mountains are increasingly filled with mounting waste left by mountaineering activities over the years. There is no official data, but Nepal’s Department of Tourism estimates that on Qomolangma alone, there is nearly 140,000 tons of waste.
Now some of that material is finding its way to local craftswomen, thanks to a new plan led by Shilshila Acharya. Acharya owns Avni Center for-Sustainability, a waste processing business in Kathmandu. She has been working with the cleaning activity since 2019, targeting mountains such as Qomolangma, Makalu, Dhaulagiri, Ama Dablam and Annapurna.
“Metals go through the recycling process, but we were not able to find a way to recycle these ropes and small cooking gas cans,” she says: It occurred to her that the non-recyclable waste could be reused, but it wasn’t until she met Maya Rai at an event that a solution was born. Rai, helped connect Acharya with Sunita Chaudhary and her team of Tharu craftswomen in the hope of turning the mountain’ waste into economic opportunity.
“People like me, who are far from the mountains but belong to the local Tharu community, are using our traditional skills to change this waste into something entirely new,” Chaudhary says.
Finished crafts are sold at craft exhibitions. The craftswomen are paid according to how many items they make and sell, earning an average of 400 Nepali Rupees per half-day’s work. Training the Brain
People who can accomplish unbelievable tasks, such as memorizing thousands of random numbers in under an hour, state that they just have normal brains. Some memory superstars compete in Olympic-like World Memory Championships. These mental athletes, or MAs for short, can memorize names of dozens of strangers in a few minutes or any poem handed them. Ed Cooke, a 24-year-old MA, explains they see themselves as participants rescuing the long-lost art of memory training. These techniques existed not to recall useless information, but to cut into the brain basic text and ideas.
A study in the journal Nature examined eight people who finished near the top of the World Memory Championships. The scientists examined whether their brains were fundamentally different from everyone else’s or whether they were simply making better use of memorizing abilities we all possess. They put the MAs and control subjects into brain scanners and had them memorize numbers and photographs. The result surprised everyone. The brains of the MAs and those of the control subjects were indistinguishable. On every test, the MAs scored in the normal range. However, when the scientists examined what part of the brain was used during a memory activity, they found the MAs relied more heavily on areas in the brain involved in spatial memory.
MAs offer an explanation: anything can be fixed upon our memories and kept in order by constructing a building in the imagination and filling it with pictures of what needs to be recalled. Dating back to the fifth century, the building is called a memory palace. Even as late as the fourteenth century, when there were copies of any text, scholars needed to remember what was read to them. Reading to remember requires a different technique than speed reading. If something is made memorable, it has to be repeated. Until relatively recently, people read only a few books intensively (细致地) again and again, usually aloud. Today we read extensively, usually only once and without continuous focus.
So the great difference is the ability to create impressive pictures in mind and to do it quickly. Using memory palaces, MAs create memorized pictures. For example, recombine the pictures to form unforgettable scenes such as the ways through a town. One competitor used his own body parts to help him memorize a 57,000-word dictionary.
Anyone who wishes to train the mind needs first to create fantastical palaces in the imagination. Then they should cut each building into cubbyholes for memories. In a short amount of time, they will notice improvement with remembering things. To keep the skill sharp, MAs deliberately empty their palaces after competitions, so they can reuse them and they recommend that beginners do the same.
12. We can learn from Paragraph 2 that a mental athlete ________.
A. owns a brain that is larger in size
B. shows a gift in mental ability tests
C. uses the memorizing technique better
D. depends less on the areas that control spatial memory
13. Why does the author mention “speed reading” in Paragraph 3
A. To discuss the memorizing technique in the fifth century.
B. To give the reason why people read only a few books carefully.
C. To explain the text fourteenth century scholars had to remember.
D. To compare the type of reading nowadays with that of earlier times.
14. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4
A. There is a variety of unforgettable scenes.
B. Memory palaces can be quickly forgotten.
C. Impressive pictures are in actual buildings.
D. One person probably has 57,000 body parts.
15. What does the underlined word “cubbyholes” in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Small spaces. B. Blacks holes.
C. Technical skills. D. Different numbers.

This day they had a physics exam, so Mo was waiting outside her class. She hated physics, because it was her worst subject. Terry looked back at her from the front, then looked away quickly. Mo thought she looked guilty. Terry didn’t have a problem with physics.
“Hi, Mo. What’s wrong with Terry I thought you were friends,” said one of her classmates, as Mo arrived.
“Yes, so did I,” said Mo, “but she hasn’t spoken to me for two weeks. She promised to help me revise for the physics exam, but then she ignored all my calls and texts. And when I rang her house, her mum told me she was busy. She doesn’t remember who her friends are!” said Mo angrily.
The other students were going into the exam room. The exam started. Mo couldn’t answer question number five. She looked up and saw Terry sitting in the next row. Mo was surprised. Terry was holding her phone under the table and she was reading from it. Is that how Terry always got good grades She felt really angry at Terry but didn’t know what to do. It wasn’t fair! Mo never cheated and she failed lots of exams.

Actually, Terry’s family were having a terrible time: her father was in the hospital because of a heart attack. Her father had a big operation today, and Terry was very worried. She couldn’t wait to check her mother’s message on the phone. But Mo knew nothing about it.
The bell rang. “Stop writing and put your pens down,” said Mr. Reed, a caring and easygoing teacher who was popular among students. Oh no, Mo hadn’t answered two of the questions. She was going to fail again!

作文范文:
On behalf of our group, I’d like to give a summary of our discussion.
As we all know, cycling is a fun, healthy and economical means of travel around the neighborhood. Parking a bike takes up less space. Besides, with more people taking to bicycles, the traffic problem in big cities will greatly be eased.
Although there are so many advantages, it also has its own limitations. It is unsuitable for a long journey. As most shared bikes don’t have a roof in case of rain, it is inconvenient and unsafe to ride bicycles in the heavy rain. What is worse, some people with bad manners park the bicycle everywhere at their will, which leads to the disorder of the city.
Anyway, the shared bike is now a popular means of transport in China. In my opinion, such a change will contribute to a healthy and responsible lifestyle.
读后续写范文:
“Mr. Reed, I have something to tell you.” Mo whispered. Mr. Reed looked up from the papers. Mo said with anger, “I think Terry might be cheating on the exam. I saw her looking at her phone under the table. I’m sure she was reading answers from it.” Mr. Reed’s eyebrows furrowed in concern. He couldn’t bear anyone cheating, especially the student who he thought was an excellent one. So he let Terry in right away. “Did you use your phone in the exam ” He asked. Taking a glance at Mo, Terry understood what happened, and she took her phone out of the pocket and opened it. To their surprise, Terry cried and explained she was so worried about her father that she couldn’t wait to check the message.
Knowing the truth, Mo felt guilty. She realized that she had jumped to conclusions and hadn’t even tried to understand why Terry had been avoiding her. She realized that true friendship meant supporting each other through tough times, not just sharing happy moments. She decided to apologize to Terry and offer her support. After school, Mo found Terry alone and explained that she had misunderstood. Terry was relieved and grateful for Mo’s understanding. Their friendship was restored, and they learned an important lesson about the value of communication and compassion.
