I arrived home from work, my mind racing. I was scheduled to perform an experiment using a pricey piece of equipment, but I had spent the whole day worrying about the experiment which was on the top of my agenda, and I amazingly longed to shut off my anxious thoughts. So after dinner, I made a cup of hot chocolate, stretched myself on my sofa, and opened a page. Almost instantly, my mind left behind the details of experimental design and stepped into a land of monsters, magic dust, and man-like bears comprising a wonderful world distinct from my daily life. It was exactly what I needed.
Growing up, I was virtually never a big fan of novels. My classmates would be crazy about the latest Harry Potter book, while my copy sat collecting dust on a shelf. Instead, I would choose to read through the reference books related to my disciplines for better grades. After I started graduate school, extracurricular reading didn’t appeal to me at all but I spent most of my time on campus digesting research papers and textbooks and my mind couldn’t handle processing fact-filled nonfiction books at home, too. So I knew that I needed to find a way to enjoy reading again.
To help me stick with it, I made a New Year’s resolution: I would read two fiction books per month for the entire year. The result was an almost instant appreciation of fiction, along with many unexpected results including ones that have benefited my schoolwork.
What surprised me the most was how much I learned. Some of the best books I read were historical fictional stories happening in a realistic historical setting. I learned about life in different countries as well as struggles people there faced during difficult periods in their histories. The books have helped me build sympathy and understanding, with an unexpected benefit: I’ve started to think more deeply about the diversity of issues in the scientific community and could serve it, heart and soul.
24. What did the author do to wipe out the anxiety
A. He drowned it in chocolate. B. He escaped into a fantasy world.
C. He slept on the sofa leisurely. D. He conducted an experiment.
25. What does the author mean by the underlined part in Paragraph 2

B. Reading a good book was time well spent.
C. He was too busy to take good care of his books.
D. The Harry Potter book wasn’t as good as expected.
26. How did the New Year’s resolution benefit the author
A. More sympathy went out to him.
B. His moral values were strengthened.
C. He learned much about religious diversity.
D. He gained new insight into his academic discipline.
27. What does the author think of the impact reading fiction books has on himself
A. Overestimated B. Underestimated C. Favourable D. Temporary

This fall, students at the University of Massachusetts found a new menu at their dining commons: the “diet for a cooler planet” menu. This meant herb-roasted lamb, raised with a carbon-friendly approach. It included sweet potatoes that had been picked from a local farm’s field post-harvest. The options were plant-heavy, locally grown, and involved little to no packaging.
“We wanted to let students participate in climate action by making choices about their food,” says Kathy Wicks, sustainability director for UMass Dining. The university is not alone in this effort. Increasingly, American consumers and institutions are thinking about how their food choices factor into climate change. For many, small choices at the grocery store, dining hall, and restaurant can feel more accessible than big-ticket options like buying a fuel-efficient car or installing home solar panels.
Small changes in dietary habits may make a big difference. Climate activists often target fossil fuels and transportation systems, but studies point to the food system as a significant contributor to global warming. According to Project Drawdown, a research organization that evaluates climate solutions, the way food is grown, transported, and consumed accounts for about a quarter of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Beef is a regular target. “If, on average, Americans cut a quarter pound of beef per week from their diet, it’s like taking 10 million cars off the road a year,” says Sujatha Bergen, director of health campaigns for the Natural Resources Defense Council. Food waste ranks third among climate solutions. While much waste occurs before consumers are involved — food left on the field or “chucked” because it does not fit appearance standards, Americans also throw out a lot of food they have purchased: about $ 1,600 worth a year per family of four.
“People are beginning to understand that their food choices make a big impact on climate,” says Megan Larmer, director of regional food at the Glynwood Center for Regional Food and Farming in New York. But, she cautions substantial change will need to come from the whole food system.
28.What is the purpose of the new menu at the University of Massachusetts
A.To market the cold dishes. B.To reduce the cost of packaging.
C.To popularize the plant-heavy diet. D.To promote low carbon awareness.
29.What can be inferred from Paragraph 2
A.Food is a decisive factor for climate change.
B.Food choices matter much to global warming.
C.Universities are working together in climate action.
D.Fuel-efficient cars are not affordable for consumers.
30.What does Sujatha Bergen say about beef
A.It has great influence on carbon reduction. B.It is popular among millions of car drivers.
C.It has a close relationship with gas emission. D.It plays a significant role in American’s diet.
31.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.Food System Reform: A Successful Trial B.Global Warming: An Approaching Danger
C.Carbon Emission: A Killer, or Healer D.Low Carbon Diet: A Craze, or More

Microsoft has announced the general availability of its Azure AI Content Safety, a new service that helps users detect and filter harmful AI-generated and user-generated content across applications and services.
The service, designed to reduce negative information in community environments, includes text and image detection and identifies content that Microsoft terms “offensive, risky, or undesirable”, including hate, bias, adult content, violence and self-harm.
“By focusing on content safety, we can create a safer digital environment that promotes responsible use of AI and safeguards the well-being of individuals and society as a whole,” wrote Louise Han, product manager for Azure Anomaly Detector, in a blog post announcing the launch.
Azure AI Content Safety has the ability to handle various content categories, languages, and threats to moderate both text and visual content. It also offers image features that use AI algorithms to scan, analyze, and moderate visual content, ensuring what Microsoft terms 360- degree comprehensive safety measures. The service is also equipped to moderate content across multiple languages and it can rate the severity of specific content on a scale ranging from 0 to 7. Then it instructs human detectors to take action.
“When it comes to online safety, it is crucial to consider more than just human-generated content, especially as AI-generated content becomes prevalent,” Han wrote. “To make sure that AI-generated outputs are accurate, reliable, or appropriate materials is essential. Content safety not only protects users from misinformation and potential harm but also upholds (支持) moral standards and builds trust in AI technologies.”
Azure AI Content Safety has a better understanding of textual content and cultural context and are more precise in processing data and content than other products in their category.

How to master tricky conversations at work
Many of us struggle to say what we need to at work. Whether it’s asking for a pay rise or facing a co-worker over their behaviour, these conversations can be difficult to have without the other person getting angry. ____36____. Here’s my tips on how to tackle your next difficult conversation.
Plan
First, you need to plan what you’re going to say. ____37____. Write down what you want out of the conversation and be clear on what you want to happen as a result. For example, you may decide: “I want to get an agreement on deadlines for this project and a clear outline of who will be responsible for each task.”
Prepare
The second thing you need to do is write down the key messages you want to get across in the conversation.
____38____. Remember to speak slowly, breathe. If you are particularly nervous, rehearse (排练) what you plan to say in front of a friend so you know you are coming across as you wish to.
Be empathetic
Finally, put yourself in the other person’s shoes — however annoying that person might be. The useless boss who never gives you feedback is simply struggling with her own workload. ____39____, the more we can plan how to work with them towards a successful outcome.
When you have the conversation, don’t get blind-sided by fast talkers. If the person you’re speaking to starts to avoid blame or your questioning, ask them what their part is in all of this and what they can take responsibility for. ____40____. And finally, if you feel under pressure, remember to respond slowly rather than reacting quickly.
A. Practise saying them out loud
B. Start with the end result in mind
C. The language you use is also important
D. The more careful you’re with the language you use

Catherine had stayed at home all her life to look after her three children, but now, she, who lost her husband in a car accident, had to step out and earn money to make ends meet. With zero work experience and no professional degree, her chances of getting hired for a well-paid job were next to zero.
One day, after dropping her children at school, Catherine spotted a construction site. “I think I can work here,” she thought and approached the manager.
“Hi, are you hiring ” she asked. “Yes, we are,” the manager looked at Catherine from head to toe. “Are you sure you can work here This job requires a lot of hard work.” “I’m ready for it,” she told the manager and signed a contract to work a 12-hour shift.
However, Catherine kept her new job a secret from her children. She thought they would feel embarrassed after learning their mother worked at a construction site.
Every morning, after dropping her children to school, she would go to the construction site and work until her shift ended. She would pick up heavy bricks on her shoulder to transport them from one part of the site to the other. One evening, Catherine’s son, Peter, told her about an upcoming contest in school that required mothers to participate. In the competition, students will wear blindfolds and have to recognize their mothers without looking at them. “That sounds like such a cool event, Peter!” Catherine said excitedly. “I can’t wait for it!” “I won’t go there with you, mom,” Peter replied. “But why ” What her son said next was something Catherine wasn’t prepared to hear.
“Mom, I would have to touch your hands to recognize you, and everyone would look at them,” Peter explained. “Your hands are so ugly. They’re so hard and rough,” he added. “I will feel so embarrassed when my classmates look at your hands,” the boy said. “I won’t attend the event.” Catherine felt terrible but couldn’t say anything in her defense.

For many, small choices at the grocery store, dining hall, and restaurant can feel more accessible than big-ticket options like buying a fuel-efficient car or installing home solar panels.(越来越多的美国消费者和机构开始考虑他们的食物选择如何影响气候变化。
根据第三段中Sujatha Bergen说的话“If, on average, Americans cut 1/4 pound of beef per week from their diet, it’s like taking 10 million cars off the road a year (如果美国人平均每周从饮食中减少1/4磅牛肉,那就相当于每年减少1000万辆汽车)”可推知,Sujatha Bergen认为牛肉对减少碳排放量有很大的影响。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是第三段中“Small changes in eating habits may make a big difference. Studies point to the food system as a significant cause of global warming.(饮食习惯的微小改变可能会带来很大的不同。研究指出,食物系统是全球变暖的一个重要原因)”和最后一段中“People are beginning to understand that their food choices have a big impact on climate(人们开始明白,他们的食物选择对气候有很大的影响)”可推知,文章主要介绍了人们可以通过选择低碳食物对气候变化做出贡献。D项“低碳饮食:是一种狂热,还是有更多意义?”适合做文章标题,故选D。

34词义猜测题。根据第五段划线词所在句“When it comes to online safety, it is crucial to consider more than just human-generated content, especially as AI-generated content becomes prevalent.(说到网络安全,关键是要考虑的不仅仅是人工生成的内容,尤其是在人工智能生成的内容变得prevalent情况下)”中的“it is crucial to consider more than just human-generated content, especially as AI-generated content becomes”以及下文中“To make sure that AI-generated outputs are accurate, reliable, or appropriate materials is essential.(确保人工智能生成的输出是准确、可靠或适当的材料是必不可少的。)” 故选A。
最后一段“Azure AI Content Safety is mainly priced on a pay-as-you-go basis. Interested users can check out pricing options on the Azure AI Content Safety pricing page.(Azure AI Content Safety的定价主要基于现收现付。

When English Meets The Arts
In the series of activities held by our school with the theme of "When English Meets The Arts", I am lucky enough to get involved and expose myself to the unique charm brought by the combination of English and the arts.
A wide range of activities, such as English poetry recitation, English song singing and English drama performance, made it accessible for us to feel the beauty of English rhythm with exposure to the arts. What impressed me most, however, was the English drawing and
hand-copying. Under the guidance of my teacher, I combined English learning with my drawing skills, therefore creating an imaginative work.
This activity provided me with an opportunity to learn through interest, enabling me to draw a work with my own insight into English and the arts.

Paragraph 1:
A few weeks later, Peter was walking home when something unexpected caught his attention. On a construction site, a familiar short thin female figure was busy carrying heavy bricks among a group of men. She used her hands to pick up bricks one by one and arrange them in a pile so that she could move them. Sweat poured down her face, but she had no time to wipe it off. Peter’s eyes got wet. That’s her mother, who he thought would make him embarrassed in front of others. Seeing the surprising scene, he had mixed feelings and ran off.
Paragraph 2:
On his way back home, he kept thinking about how he would apologize to his mother. He came into the kitchen, where Catherine was preparing dinner, words failing him. Catherine noticed him stand still and then asked curiously, “What’s the matter, Peter ” With a deep breath, Peter said, “I’m sorry, Mom. You have always been looking after us while I have made you sad.” Catherine smiled, and now she knew that Peter had already found her secret, saying, “That’s OK, son. But I really hope you will participate in that contest.” “Of course, I want to let everyone watch my mom’s hands. I really feel proud of it!” Peter said firmly.

M: Hello, everyone. We are lucky to have Molly Taylor here today. Molly is organizing an activity course for the summer holidays. Molly, this is the second year of the course, isn’t it
W: Yes. The summer course operated for the first time last year for a six-week period. We did think about making it longer this year and have a seven-week course, as there’re some schools which finish term a week earlier. In fact, two schools have eight-week holidays. But in the end we decided to keep to the same plan as last year.
M: But, as I understand, last year’s course wasn’t a complete success, was it
W: Well, we were actually very surprised by the number of people interested in the course. We didn’t actually have enough assistants to look after all the children. Besides, there was such a lot of rain that we couldn’t go outside as often as we wanted to.
M: So, what activities can the children look forward to this year
W: Well, once again there’ll be artists and musicians who will lead creative classes. We also considered providing some more exciting adventure sports. But we decided not to, in the end.
Instead we’re introducing some fun programs. I think it’ll be good fun for children.

Pleased to be here today. My name’s Joan and I’d like to share with you something about my French learning. I still remember when I first started to learn the language I didn’t really have a problem with the pronunciation. I just had a hard time memorizing words. But I made a great effort and soon I was scoring ten out of ten in all of the tests. By the time I got to university, I could do some writing and translations without much difficulty, and I actually enjoyed learning the grammar rules. Then as part of my university course I had to go and live in France for a year. As soon as I arrived, I realized I didn’t know how to order the type of coffee I liked, and trying to find somewhere to live or stay was something difficult to deal with. I called people about information in the paper, but I had to keep putting the phone down because I couldn’t understand a word they were saying — they all spoke so quickly! I could see then that there’s no point in just knowing words if you can’t hold a conversation with a native speaker. The ability to speak freely is what helps you get a job, hold a conversation or just buy things you need.
