For most of us, walking is something we do automatically. It doesn’t require much effort, so many of us fail to remember the benefits of walking for health.
Physical activity doesn’t need to be hard. Whether you’re regularly active or not, even a quick ten-minute daily walk can deliver a host of health benefits. But what happens if we stop walking ahead and start challenging our brains and bodies by walking backwards Not only does this change of direction demand more of our attention, but it may also bring additional health benefits.
One of the most well-studied benefits of walking backwards is improving stability and balance. Walking backwards can improve how a person walks and balance for healthy adults and those with knee problems. Walking backwards causes us to take shorter, more frequent steps, leading to improve the muscles of the lower legs. But the benefits of changing direction aren’t just that- -an interest in backwards movement has led researchers to discover various other benefits. While normal walking can help us maintain a healthy weight, walking backwards may be even more effective. Energy expenditure when walking backwards is almost 40 percent higher than walking at the same speed forwards, with one study showing reductions in body fat for women who completed a six-week backwards walk.
Walking backwards is simple, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. So, how can you add walking backwards into your exercise plan When walking backwards, we’re more likely to crash into
something or fall over, so in the interest of safety, it’s best to start indoors where you won’t crash into someone or outside in a flat, open area. Look over your shoulder. Keep your head and chest upright while reaching back with your big toe for each step, rolling through the foot from toe to heel. Once you become more confident walking backwards, you can begin to speed things up.
4.Why does the author mention “the benefits of walking” in the beginning
A.To introduce the topic. B.To show people’s lack of exercise.

5.What does the underlined word “expenditure” mean
A.Increase. B.Experiment. C.Consumption. D.Production.
6.What does the fourth paragraph talk about
A.When is safe to walk backwards B.How can we start walking backwards
C.Why should we walk backwards D.What’s weakness of walking backwards
7.What is the best title for the passage
A.Physical Activity Is Easy And Simple
B.Walking Doesn’t Require Any Special Equipment
C.Walking Backwards Is Really Good For You
D.Walking Ahead Challenges Our Brains and Bodies
Last August, the 900-year-old Wan’an Bridge in Pingnan County, a locality of Ningde City in the coastal Fujian province, was destroyed when it suddenly caught fire.
Wan’an, a national-level protected building, was a wooden arch corridor bridge (木拱廊桥),which for centuries was an ancient architectural calling card for the region. The bridge,98.2 meters long and 4.7 meters wide, was first built in the Song dynasty (960~1279), and was the longest wooden arch corridor bridge left standing in China. Few, however, had imagined that such an ancient bridge would attract public attention in such a way.
Amid the powerful voice of the local population for new wooden arch bridges, the traditional techniques behind the building work have well and truly been revived (唤醒), but the protection of the ancient buildings still has much room for improvement.
Currently, China’s approach to the protection of national heritage sites puts protecting and rescuing endangered buildings before all else, but to keep these ancient buildings alive, preventive
protection is key.
“Technically, restoring (修复) Wan’an isn’t very difficult,” said Li, Deputy County Mayor of Pingnan. “Along with the help of the local inheritors of the national intangible cultural heritage, the bridge’s restoration looks hopeful. However, the historical value will definitely be affected.”
Meanwhile, Zhan, the former Deputy Dean at the Chinese Academy of Cultural Heritage, pointed out the recent destruction of Wan’an Bridge highlights a serious shortage of warning mechanisms and preventative protection measures, which currently are supposed to be the most important part of protection. “Significant improvements have been made in the past few years in protection, but we still have a long way to go on proper planning for protection work. How to protect cultural heritage is a matter that we need to discuss as soon as possible,” he added.
8.What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the bridge
A.Its exact length. B.Its historical value.
C.Its special location. D.Its talented builder.
9.What plays a key role in keeping ancient buildings alive according to the text
A.Rescuing ruined sites first. B.Following the locals’ advice.
C.Taking preventive action. D.Developing the tourist industry.
10.What can we infer about the protection of cultural heritage from Zhan’s words
A.It needs more effort. B.It is a complete failure.
C.It is a success story. D.It focuses on warnings.
11.Which can be a suitable title for the text
A.How We Restore Old Buildings B.What Wan’an Bridge Taught Us
C.A Fresh Approach to Fire Prevention D.A Plan of Action for Protection Work
I was cutting up lettuce in the kitchen when I suddenly remembered watching a video about soaking the lettuce stub (莴苣残余部分) in water to grow a whole new vegetable. So I took out a wide-mouthed cup and placed the stub into it, gave it a little water, and placed it by the window.
On a snowy morning I noticed the first sign. A first small leaf from its heart spread out. A tiny green flag of hope. Beaten, but not defeated. This lettuce was not done living! Within days, it was impossible to see the cuts where I had removed the leaves. The growth was explosive. And when I lifted the blossoming head out of the cup, tiny root threads fell down, seeking for the earth.
What is growing here Lettuce or hope
If I were a lettuce in a similar condition, I’d want to skeptically assess where I found myself before committing to full growth. Yet for this lettuce, my inadequate offering of water and a place by a window was enough for it to decide to reclaim itself again. It grew in a cup of water, in faith. This is the heart of this lettuce: alive, strong and fearless. It deserved a name. I decided to call it Monty.
Monty wanted to grow, as we all do. I think I gave him a little love and freedom. Those two were all he needed to return to himself. I see joy in this lettuce. The return to self is always an expression of joy, which is life itself. This is the tendency of all living things.
Monty still lives in a cup, but I’m going to transplant him outside. He deserves to become his full self. The only problem I see now is my ability to support Monty. I hope I have enough of a green finger.
I’m surprised to find myself where I am. Maybe Monty is, too. I have the same choice as he does: give in or start again. The prospect of starting again is discouraging. But my lettuce-friend, Monty, leads the way. I can only hope to be as brave.
12.Why did the author soak the stub in water
A.To decorate the nice cup. B.To hope that it would grow.
C.To make a video in person. D.To remove kitchen rubbish.
13.What can we infer from paragraph two
A.This lettuce showed no sign of recovery.
B.This lettuce was still fighting to survive.
C.Tiny root thread climbed out of the cup.
D.The cuts can still be seen where there used to be leaves.
14.How would the author feel if put in the lettuce’s situation
A.Hesitant. B.Fearless. C.Aimless. D.Annoyed.
15.What can we learn from Monty
A.Never being afraid to restart yourself. B.Believing in yourself when in trouble.
C.Enjoying your own life to the fullest. D.Giving freedom to the heart in a way.

As I stood in line waiting to pay for the things I bought at my favorite supermarket, I studied the customer in front of me who was reading the magazines to our left. She was young, maybe in her early twenties, but she looked tired-as if life had beaten her down too many times.
The things in her cart included the cheapest cuts of meat, rice, and potatoes. Powdered milk, day-old bread, bargain soap, and inexpensive shampoo completed the things she bought-well, almost. There were also lots of instant noodles and a pretty dress that was 50 percent off.
She continued to look at the magazines as we waited, and more people lined up behind us. She finally took one out and turned it over several times, trying to find a price before finally turning to me.
“I’m sorry to trouble you,“she said.“But can you tell me how much this is I left my glasses at home. ”“Of course,” I said with a laugh.
When I finally found the small print and told her, she sighed quietly and put it back.“They’ve become so expensive, haven’t they ”I said in a low voice.
“Next!”The cashier called before she could answer, and she moved forward to begin her tun. When the store employee finally told her the cost, the woman’s face paled(变苍白).She opened an old purse and began counting small bills and change. It was clear that she didn’t have enough, and she examined her things to see what she could do without.
One by one, she took things out, but she still came up short. She continued taking things out while the cashier waited patiently. The man right behind me complained loudly enough for all to hear, and the young woman’s face reddened with awkwardness. I wanted to pay for her things outright, but I knew that would embarrass(使尴尬) her even more.
“Take your time,”I added gently as she tried to decide what other things she could return.“I’m in no hurry.

根据第四段“Currently, China’s approach to the protection of national heritage sites puts protecting and rescuing endangered buildings before all else, but to keep these ancient buildings alive, preventive protection is key.(目前,中国对国家遗产地的保护把保护和抢救濒危建筑放在第一位,但要使这些古建筑保持活力,预防性保护是关键)”可知,采取预防措施在保持古建筑的活力方面起着关键作用。故选C。
根据最后一段“Meanwhile, Zhan, the former Deputy Dean at the Chinese Academy of Cultural Heritage, pointed out the recent destruction of Wan’an Bridge highlights a serious shortage of warning mechanisms and preventative protection measures, which currently are supposed to be the most important part of protection. “Significant improvements have been made in the past few years in protection, but we still have a long way to go on proper planning for protection work. How to protect cultural heritage is a matter that we need to discuss as soon as possible,” he added.(与此同时,中国文化遗产研究院前副院长詹教授指出,万安大桥最近的被毁凸显了预警机制和预防性保护措施的严重不足,而这些是目前保护工作中最重要的部分。“在过去几年里,保护工作取得了重大进展,但我们在保护工作的适当规划方面还有很长的路要走。如何保护文化遗产是我们需要尽快讨论的问题,”他补充道)”可推知,从詹的话语中,我们可以对文化遗产的保护需要更多的努力。故选A。
根据第一段“Last August, the 900-year-old Wan’an Bridge in Pingnan County, a locality of Ningde City in the coastal Fujian province, was destroyed when it suddenly caught fire.(去年8月,沿海省份福建省宁德市屏南县拥有900年历史的万安桥突然起火,被烧毁)”及下文可知,文章介绍了万安大桥的价值以及带给我们关于文物保护工作的反思。
12.B 13.B 14.A 15.A
根据第一段“I was cutting up lettuce in the kitchen when I suddenly remembered watching a video about soaking the lettuce stub (莴苣残余部分) in water to grow a whole new vegetable. So I took out a wide-mouthed cup and placed the stub into it, gave it a little water, and placed it by the window. (我正在厨房切莴苣,突然想起看过一个视频,讲的是把莴苣残余部分泡在水里,就会长出一个全新的蔬菜。于是我拿出一个宽口杯子,把残余部分放进去,浇了一点水,然后把它放在窗边)”可知,作者把莴苣残余部分泡在水中是希望能看到它生长。故选B项。
13.推理判断题。根据第二段中“On a snowy morning I noticed the first sign. A first small leaf from its heart spread out. A tiny green flag of hope. Beaten, but not defeated. This lettuce was not done living! Within days, it was impossible to see the cuts where I had removed the leaves. (在一个下雪的早晨,我注意到了第一个迹象。第一片小叶子从它的芯里伸出来。希望的小绿旗。被打败了,但没有被打败。这莴苣没有放弃生存!几天之内,我就无法看到我切除叶子的伤口了)”可知,这棵莴苣没有放弃生长,真的长出了小叶子,很快就迅速覆盖住原先的伤口。由此可知,这棵莴苣还在挣扎求生。故选B项。
14.细节理解题。根据第三段中“If I were a lettuce in a similar condition, I’d want to skeptically assess where I found myself before committing to full growth. (如果我是一棵处于类似状况的莴苣,我会先怀疑地评估一下自己的状况,然后再开始全面生长)”可知,如果作者处于莴苣的状况之下,他会犹豫不决,在评估好环境后才努力生长。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“I have the same choice as he does: give in or start again. The prospect of starting again is discouraging. But my lettuce-friend, Monty, leads the way. I can only hope to be as brave. (我和他有同样的选择:要么放弃,要么重新开始。重新开始的前景令人沮丧。但是我的莴苣朋友Monty在前面带路。我只希望能像他一样勇敢)”可知,作者认识到自己应该像莴苣朋友Monty一样勇敢,不畏惧重新开始可能遇到的令人沮丧的状况。由此可知,我们应该向Monty学习永远不要害怕重新开始。故选A项。

16.上文“The most successful people all have certain habits in their daily routines.”(最成功的人在日常生活中都有一定的习惯)指出成功人士都会有些生活习惯,D项的“These habits”和“their success”分别与上文的“certain habits”和“The most successful people”相对应,即进一步指出他
17.上文“Before you can begin to work on your new habit, it is worthwhile to consider your goal.”(在开始培养新习惯之前,值得考虑一下你的目标)讲的是培养习惯之前首先得考虑自己的目标。 下文“Make sure that your goal is specific, measurable and realistic to increase your chances of success.”(确保你的目标是具体的、可衡量的且现实的,从而提高成功的几率)进一步指出所设目标需符合什么条件。
下文“Having good habits that are in line with the goals can improve your chances of attaining your goals. After you have set your goal and worked out all of the specifics of achieving that goal, identify a habit that is part of achieving that goal.”(养成与目标一致的好习惯可以提高你实现目标的几率。
19.上文“Once you have identified your goal and the new habit you need to accomplish this goal, take some time to consider your motivation.”(一旦你确定了自己的目标以及与之一致的新习惯,你需花些时间考虑你的动机)讲的是确定目标和培养什么习惯后,就得考虑自己的动机。 下文“Good motivation can be the difference between success and failure in terms of forming a new habit.”(就培养新习惯而言,好的动机可能是成功与失败的区别)则指出动机与成功养成新习惯的关联。
20.上文“As you work to form your new habit, just keep in mind that it may be a while before it comes true.”(当你开始培养新习惯时,牢记养成新的习惯可能需要一段时间)指出不是一朝一夕就能养成的,而是需要时间,F项“当你培养新习惯时,尽量对自己有耐心”对应上文“it may be a while”,培养新习惯时需要时间,所以要对自己有耐心。
