Most scientists agree the Great Sphinx of Giza(吉萨狮身人面像) was built around 2,500 B.C.But John Anthony West says that it’s much older. If he’s right, “everything anybody has learned about ancient civilizations would have to be completely revised(修改),” he told a magazine.
West, a writer and film-maker, first got interested in ancient history after studying the work of a French researcher. The researcher said Egyptian civilization could have developed as early as 30,000 years ago, rather than 4,500 years ago, as most experts believe.
West joined a scientist to do research together. Their research suggested that the Sphinx had been worn down(磨损) over the years by water, rather than by sand and wind.
Wait a minute? Water? How could that be? The Sphinx is in the Sahara Desert, which has been dry for 12,000 years! However, before that time, it was very green. If it’s true that water wore down the Sphinx, West thinks that it must have been built centuries earlier.
Whether West is right or wrong, it’s important to challenge accepted ideas. That’s how science progresses.
West gave some advice to kids:If you are interested in a topic, read everything you can on it. Do your own research. Don’t always believe everything your teachers tell you. Ask lots of questions, and find your own answers.

(自然灾害)Have you ever heard of an avalanche(雪崩)? Avalanches are sudden natural disasters(灾难)where a lot of snow and ice slide(滑)down the mountains. As they slide, the snow and ice move faster and faster.Snow from an avalanche can move as fast as two hundred miles every hour.
Most avalanches happen after big storms. In the mountains like the Alps and the Himalayas, there are snow and ice all year round. After big storms, new snow puts more pressure on the snow that is already in the mountains. The pressure can make the old snow slide.
Avalanches are very dangerous.Heavy snow moving down the mountains may pull other things along, such as trees and rocks.Luckily,no one lives in the mountains where avalanches are easy to happen. So not many people die from avalanches each year.Because of this, many people don’t know the danger of the avalanche.
Most people who may lose their lives in avalanches are mainly ski lovers. They want to have fun in the mountains. And they want to challenge themselves.Experts can usually tell people when an avalanche might happen. However, the nature is unpredictable.Even though the experts can warn people of the risk, there are still some accidents each year.If you are a ski lover, remember to pay more attention to experts’ warnings and learn to protect yourself carefully.

There are countless myths(神话) to explain how the world came to have a moon to bring light to the night time. But now there is a plan for a man-made moon.It will give us much more light than the natural Moon.
China had prepared to put a man-made moon in the sky above Chengdu by 2020.It would reflect sunlight back onto the Earth. If it succeeds, three more such objects will be sent out in 2022,according to Wu Chunfeng,a space scientist.Wu said it would be similar to how we get moonlight, but he predicted(预言) that the man-made moon would have eight times the brightness of the real one.“This is because the object will be about 500 kilometers above the Earth. That will make it a lot closer to us than the Moon, which is over 380,000 kilometers away,” Wu added.
If the plan works, the man-made moon will save a lot of power.Scientists predicted that Chengdu could save around 1.2 billion yuan in electricity every year if a new moon lit up 50 square kilometers of the city. And in 2022,four man-made moons can take turns to work as they will not always be in the best position(位置) relative to the Sun.Together, they can give light to an area of up to 6,400 square kilometers on the Earth for 24 hours. That means its brightness will be seen in most areas in China,so reducing the need for streetlights.
