Many students graduating from Shenzhen University have been inspired by a song. It was written and performed by the university's international choir(合唱团). This song is called Lychee Orchard. It was created by the International Choir of Shenzhen University as a gift to the school ahead of its 40th anniversary(周年纪念日) celebration in 2023.
“Although we come from different parts of the world, we have our love for Chinese language and music. Now, as we face graduation and separation, we hope everyone can look back on the school memories through our song,” said Shin Moonsub, the choir's head. He has spent more than 10 years studying at Shenzhen University.
With such high values, it is perhaps hard to believe that Lychee Orchard is the work of students. However, the International Choir of Shenzhen University has already written and produced many songs in Chinese since its founding in 2016.② In 2021, the choir produced When the Ice is Shining in celebration of the Beijing Winter Olympics.
“No matter how the themes of the songs may alter, the creative idea has always been telling stories about China,” said Shin.③ According to Shin, international students in China not only learn knowledge and the language, but also see China's development. Music is the best way to express their experiences in China.
In the beginning, the choir was small, with fewer than 10 members. Most of them were Shin's classmates. Now, it has around 140 members and becomes more and more popular.
