(1) What is the author's attitude to the Olympic Games Use details in the article to support your opinion.
A3 Reading and thinking
The author's attitude to the Olympic Games is positive and full of admiration. In the introduction, the author describes the athletes as "highly trained and talented" and the atmosphere of the Games as "in the spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play". In the paragraphs that follow, the author introduces Muhammad Ali and Jessica Ennis-Hill, who serve as examples of well-known Olympic athletes motivated by the Olympic motto "Faster, Higher, Stronger". In the conclusion, the author focuses on the joy and excitement the Games bring to people across the world and gives a quote by Coubertin: "With the Olympic Games, each generation celebrates its advent, its joy of living, its faith in the future, its ambition and its will to ascend."
(2) Do you think the Olympic Games can help people of different racial origins and from different cultures live side by side in peace Why or why not
Yes, absolutely. The Olympic Games, by celebrating sportsmanship worldwide, draw attention to the hard work that athletes put in and the devotion they have to their specific sport. Sports fans do not care about race or culture either, but instead, are impressed by the athletes' physical and mental abilities and show their appreciation for every athlete's effort.
(3) How do you understand Coubertin's words at the end of the website article
I think Coubertin's words mean that the Olympic Games would have a positive influence on the world well into the future. Coubertin believed that through the "joy of living" and "faith in the future", the Games would make the future better so that people of all races and cultures could live in harmony. When Coubertin said its ambition and its will to ascend", he was referring to how the Games would motivate humans to strive for greater and greater ambitions with each generation, making humanity stronger over time.
