Lin Chong (林冲), Li Kui, Song Jiang… These are popular characters (人物) from the classic novel Outlaws of the Marsh. Every spring Festival, they “come out” of the novel and dance in the street. This is Yingge dance. Yingge dance is a traditional Chinese folk dance in Guangdong. It is a mix (综合) of dance, opera and kung fu. It gets ideas from Outlaws of the Marsh and tells stories of good beating evil (邪恶). People also call it the warrior’s(勇士) dance. Dancers wear beautiful clothes and hold short sticks in their hands. While walking and dancing, they hit the sticks together. With the drums and the dancers’ cool moves, the dance rocks the streets and everyone wants to dance together. In Guangdong, young and old and men and women all like the dance. Girl Yingge dance gets ideas from the stories of Mu Guiying (穆桂英) and Hua Mulan. Look at this girl, she became popular online when dancing during Spring Festival. “Yingge dance is very cool,” she said. “Practicing the dance is hard work, but we will bring out our best.”
