Teaching procedures:
Task1: Free talk
Tell the students we’ll learn some different jobs today and ask them two questions:
What job do you know?
What would you like to be when you grow up?Why?
Task2: Presentation 1—— the past continuous tense
1. Tell the students we are going to learn about some different jobs. Show some pictures of different job and lead them use “was/ were + doing” to describe the pictures.
Eg: Picture1: What is the woman? ( She is a cook?)
What was she doing at this time yesterday? ( She was cooking some delicious food.)
Picture3: What are they? (They are vets.)
What were they doing from 9:00 to 10:30 last Monday morning?
(They were looking after a sick dog. )
After the picture show, make a conclusion about the past continuous tense—— when we talk about things that wee happening at a particular time in the past, we use the past continuous tense.
Play a guessing game. Show some pictures with part of them covered and ask the students to guess what he/she was doing. It’s to let the students practice using “ Was he doing……?/ Yes, she was. / No, she wasn’t doing ……”
Task 3: Presentation 2—— using “when”, “while” and “as”
Part A: Learn to use “while”
Do a memory test. Show the pictures the watched in Task 1 and do a memory test.
T: Do you remember them? What was he doing at 3 pm yesterday?( He was taking some photos.)
What was she doing at 3 pm yesterday? ( She was showing people around the park. )
We can put the two sentences into one.
( He was taking some photos while she was showing people around the park.)
Make a conclusion: when two long actions happened at the same time, we often use “while” to join them.
Practice: show more pictures to practice using “while” to join two long actions.
Part B: Learn to use “when” and “as”
T: Many students want to be doctors. Do you learn a lot about a doctor’s life? Let’s learn about Dr. Zhang’s day. Doctor Zhang is an excellent young doctor. He works in a big hospital. He is very busy even at weekends.
Show some pictures about Dr. Zhang’s day.
Eg: Picture 1: His son was sleeping when he left his home in the early morning.

Make the first conclusion: when the longer action is in the main clause, we often use “when” to join the shorter action. ( longer action + when + shorter action);
