When Charlotte Liebling was in college, she volunteered at a store that sold secondhand goods. She observed that people brought items to donate, including stuffed toys(毛绒玩具). Liebling could tell that the toys held great emotional value for their owners. So she felt sad when the toys were sold very cheaply, put in the dog-toy section, or thrown away.
One night, when Liebling got home from work, she started doing some research. She realized that it wasn’t happening only in her town. Worldwide, she learned, millions of toys end up in landfills every year. “If we can change the view that the stuffed toys lose their value once they’ve been loved,” she recalls, “then we can show people that they have so much left in them, and give them to others.” That’s how the Loved Before, a toy-adoption agency, began.
The process starts when someone donates a soft toy. The original owner writes down the name of the toy and a story about it. Liebling and her team believe that sharing what makes the toy unique helps potential new owners understand its value.
Next, the toy is cleaned, photographed, and packaged with its name and story. Every Monday, toys are posted for adoption on the Loved Before website. The company makes a charitable donation of at least half of the profit from the sale of each toy.
Since its creation in 2019, Loved Before has sold more than 50,000 stuffed toys. “But the company’s goal is more than just trying to save some toys from landfills,” Liebling says. “We are trying to change people’s views on a really wide level.” She explains that Loved Before hopes to teach kids “about the value of loving secondhand things again, in the hope that it will go far beyond the idea of teddy bears”. Loved Before is writing a new chapter in the life cycle of toys.
24. Why did Liebling feel sad about secondhand stuffed toys as a volunteer
A. They were not appreciated.
B. They were priced quite high.
C. They had no emotional value.
D. Their owners couldn’t find them.
25. What does Liebling think is the key to saving used stuffed toys
A. Encouraging people to claim their lost toys.
B. Persuading the original owners to keep them.
C. Preventing them from being thrown into landfills.
D. Making people realize their value can be passed on.
26. How does Loved Before highlight its toys
A. By offering appealing discounts.
B. By including the toys’ history.
C. By making up stories for them.
D. By changing the toys’ appearance.
27. Which of the following can best describe Liebling
A. Ambitious and critical. B. Intelligent and firm.
C. Innovative and caring. D. Adaptable and modest.

New parents often find it challenging to get sufficient rest, but for certain penguin species, the struggle is even more noticeable. Recent studies involving the use of brain wave-measuring devices on chinstrap penguins have revealed that these creatures take extremely brief naps, averaging only 4 seconds each. This behavior is repeated numerous times a day, accumulating to approximately 11 hours of micro sleeps which seem to keep the penguin parents for weeks.
Niels Rattenborg, a sleep expert from the Max Planck Institute, conducted an 11-day study on King George Island near Antarctica, monitoring the sleep patterns of 14 adult chinstrap penguins. He observed that these penguins maintained constant wakefulness, blinking(眨眼睛)their eyes open and closed around the clock for several weeks. He also found that chinstrap penguins only slept for about four seconds at a time in order to safeguard their eggs and newborn chicks. Remarkably, despite such minimal sleep, they were still capable of effectively raising their babies.
Typically, chinstrap penguins lay their eggs in November, constructing nests from small stones. Similar to many other penguin species, they share the responsibility of parenting. One parent remains on guard while the other goes off fishing for family meals. During the breeding season, adult penguins face few natural threats, but they must be wary of larger birds known as brown skuas, which hunt their eggs and chicks, as well as other penguins that may attempt to steal stones from their nests.
“For these penguins, microsleeps serve as away to repair themselves and they are crucial for the penguins’ survival,” said Niels. While the study did not extend beyond the mating season, it is hypothesized that chinstrap penguins may engage in longer sleep periods at other times of the year. The scientific community is yet to determine whether the benefits of these microsleeps are equivalent to those gained from longer sleep duration, and it remains unclear if other penguin species exhibit similar sleep patterns.
28. What does the recent study on chinstrap penguins focus on
A. Sleeping patterns. B. Brain waves.
C. Newborn nursing. D. Parenting style.
29. What is the primary reason for the penguins’ constant wakefulness
A. To keep exchanging with each other.
B. To look out for threats to their young.
C. To ensure they are always ready to hunt for food.
D. To adapt to the weather conditions of Antarctica.
30. What does the underlined word “wary” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Critical. B. Guilty. C. Watchful. D. Fond.
31. What can be confirmed through the research
A. Chinstrap penguins’ sleeping habits vary with seasons.
B. Microsleeps are a unique feature of chinstrap penguins.
C. Chinstrap penguins have microsleeps just in the mating season.
D. Microsleeps have restorative function for chinstrap penguins.
D
Cigarettes pose a risk to nearly all health conditions, yet the potential health consequences for smokers extend beyond immediate diseases.
A group of 1,000 healthy volunteers who were aged 20 to 70 were examined to see why human immune systems(免疫系统)vary significantly in terms of how effectively they respond to microbial(微生物的)attack. Age, sex and genetics are known to have a significant impact on the immune system, and the aim of this new study was to determine what other factors had the most influence.
The scientists exposed blood samples taken from the individuals to a wide variety of microbes such as viruses, bacteria, etc., and observed their immune response by measuring levels of secreted cytokines(细胞激素). Using the large quantities of data gathered for the individuals in the group, they then determined which of the 136 investigated variables, including body mass index, smoking, the number of hours’ sleep, exercise, childhood illnesses, vaccinations, living environment, etc., had the most influence on the immune responses studied. Three variables stood out: smoking, latent cytomegalovirus infection—a virus in the herpes family, and body mass index.
Analysis of the data showed that the inflammatory(发炎的)response was heightened in smokers and moreover, the activity of certain cells involved in immune memory was damaged. In other words, this study shows that smoking disrupts not only inborn immune mechanisms, but also some adaptive immune mechanisms.
Basically, it seems that the immune system has a type of long-term memory of smoking’s effects. But how does this happen That part is still unclear. Some researchers think this phenomenon is due to what could be considered the modern biological version of the 19th century’s concept off “aether”. They rely on a series of indirect evidence. However, it’s not a solid biological mechanism, and a detailed explanation will need to wait for further research. Regardless of why it happens, it happens, so stop smoking.
32. What is the purpose of the study mentioned in the text
A. To figure out the potential causes of smoking.
B. To explore how aging affects immune system.
C. To identify factors affecting immune response.
D. To develop a new way against microbial attack.
33. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The significance of immune response.
B. The analysis of data in the experiment.
C. The range of viruses used in the experiment.
D. The process and findings of the experiment.
34. What is the author’s attitude to some researchers’ theory basis
A. Positive. B. Suspicious.
C. Objective. D. Unconcerned.
35. What can be the best title for the text
A. Cigarettes Have A Long-Term Effect On Immune System
B. Smokers May Get Away From Immune System Disorders
C. Smokers Suffer From More Than Common Health Issues
D. Cigarettes Pose An Immediate Risk To Immune System

How to Tolerate Those You Have a Personality Conflict With
Living or working with people who have very different personalities or beliefs from you can present challenges. 36 Here are some strategics to help you navigate these difficult interactions and maintain healthy relationships and a harmonious environment.
37 In many cases, a personality conflict arises because of expectations, differences of opinion, or some other underlying issues. Consider if you’ve had a bad experience with the person, or if you’re relying on rumors(谣言)or someone else’s conflict to inform your opinion on the person. Figuring out the roots may help you realize that your conflict is foolish.
Get to know the person. Every person has their own perspectives that are formed based on their experiences. Consider where this person is coming from through his or her behaviors. 38 Acknowledging that his or her perspectives differ from yours can help you to give the person a chance.
Identify the virtues in the person. Holding on to negative thoughts and attitudes about another person is draining(使心力交瘁的). 39 Learn to see the positive in any person. Even the worst person has good qualities. It might take some time to recognize them, but being able to see the positive traits in a person can help you to shift your relationship with him or her.
Limit interactions with the person. If you genuinely find it challenging to put up with someone, minimize interactions with him or her. There are different ways to achieve it. For example, if you are at social settings, don’t sit near him or her or move if he or she is close to you. Nevertheless, sometimes you have to engage with the person either professionally or personally. 40
A. Let go of your expectations.
B. You are ultimately the judge of your situation.
C. Determine the source of your conflict with the person.
D. When you constantly harbor them, they can become stronger.
E. Should this occur, remember to keep the contact civil and polite.
F. Relevant context information can help you accept the person as he or she is.
G. However, learning to tolerate and manage these differences is mentally crucial.

16-year-old Benson was born in an ordinary family. His father worked at a factory, while his mother labored as a cleaner. Despite their modest means, Benson’s parents always struggled to provide him with the best they could. On his 10th birthday, they sent him something that would become a treasured possession: a convertible car(敞篷汽车)model. The toy gradually blew up a dream within him. He imagined that one day, through his own hard work, he could buy a real exquisite(精致的)car.
From a young age, Benson understood his parents’ devotion to supporting the family. Now at high school, he often helped out to ease their burden by taking on some chores after school. His parents appreciated his efforts, though they always reminded him to focus on his studies.
One day, Benson decided to bake cookies for his mother, intending to surprise her with a treat during her break at work. With a box of freshly baked cookies in hand, he made his way to the outdoor area where his mother worked. The sun was shining brightly, and Benson felt a sense of pride as he approached her.
When he arrived, they sat together on the grass, enjoying the cookies and each other’s company. They talked about his day at school and her experiences at work. As they chatted and laughed, a car, amazingly similar in design and color to Benson’s cherished model, pulled up in front of them. Benson couldn’t take his eyes off the car. He was fascinated and even walked closer to admire it. He longed to touch it but hesitated, feeling a mix of awe(敬畏)and fear.
Suddenly, the car’s roof began to retract(缩回), revealing a man in the driver’s seat. Wearing sunglasses and a serious expression, the man had observed all about Benson, obviously. Embarrassed, Benson quickly retreated to his mother’s side.

2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

W: Oh, hello. I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I’d phone to find out a bit more.
M: Yes, certainly. Well, we are a sort of social club for people from different countries. It’s quite a new club—we have about 50 members at the moment, but we are growing all the time.
W: That sounds interesting. I’m British actually, and I came to Washington about three months ago. I’m looking for ways to meet people. Er, what kinds of events do you organize
M: Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings. W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings
M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages—you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday—Spanish; Tuesday—Italian; Wednesday—German; and Friday—French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.
W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French.
M: OK. Well, if you can just give me your name and address, I’ll send you the form and some more information. If you join now, you can have the first month free.

M: Lily! How was your flight
W: Oh, fine. And the hotel is wonderful. It has amazing baths. So when can we meet
M: Well, tonight’s impossible. I’m seeing Paul, a Hungarian friend.
W: That’s fine. I’m a bit tired anyway.
M: How about tomorrow I’m meeting students during the day, but I’ll be free in the evening.
W: I’ve got a business dinner tomorrow night. Are you doing anything the night after tomorrow
M: Sorry, I will play tennis with three of my friends on Tuesday. We always play tennis on Tuesday nights, so I can’t cancel it. And I’m going to Vienna on Wednesday. What about Thursday night
W: Thursday’s fine. Are you going to take me to that restaurant you mentioned
M: Of course.
W: And then perhaps you can show me around a bit on Friday I’ll be free in that afternoon.
M: Sorry. Friday afternoon is no good. I’m going to the dentist’s at four. But maybe after dinner on Thursday, we can go for a walk and you can see Budapest at night. I can pick you up at the hotel at about 7: 30.

The man then stepped out of the car and walked towards Benson and his mother. He removed his sunglasses, asking with a kind smile, “Would you like to experience what it’s like to sit in a convertible ” Benson and his mother exchanged surprised glances. Encouraged by the man’s friendly tone, they cautiously approached the car. Benson’s heart raced with excitement as he and his mother settled into the luxurious seats. The man started the engine and took them on a short drive around the neighborhood. The wind in their hair and the thrill of the ride filled them with joy. For Benson, it was a moment of pure excitement, a glimpse into a dream he hoped to one day realize.
After experiencing the ride, Benson and his mother got off the car, still excited. They expressed their genuine gratitude towards the man. He smiled warmly, sharing stories of his own journey and the hard work it took to achieve his dream of owing the car. He said, “Keep studying hard, boy. Work towards your dreams, and one day, you might find yourself driving a car like this. ”His words deeply touched Benson’s heart. This unexpected experience left a significant impact on Benson.
