Discovering a hobby can lead to amazing results, as Maria Martinez, an 11-year-old with a heart of gold, has
proven.
Just over a year ago, Maria came across the world of clothes-making, thanks to one of the Christmas gifts she
received. Little did she know that this newfound ability would become a source of joy and purpose, not just for her,
but also for countless furry friends.
“I got a gift permit at Christmas to start clothes-making lessons,” Maria said. “I really liked it.”
After mastering the basics, an idea came to her mind during a visit to a local exhibition.Surrounded by pet
owners and their pets, Maria had an idea that would change lives. Why not create lovely bandannas (头巾) for dogs
and cats and use them to support animal shelters
With great interest and the support of her grandmother, Maria turned a corner of their home into a busy
working room. Together, they made many beautiful bandannas, each one filled with love and care.
But Maria’s wish went far beyond creating decorations. She began donating her works to shelters like Claws
Forever in Fall River, hoping to catch the eye of some people who can take these dogs and cats home.
Maria also began selling them through word-of-mouth and at various events. “At first she started just donating
the bandannas because it took her much time to make them. Then she got more skilled and was able to buy cloth
with some extra income that she was making from it,” her mom, Crystal, said. “Maria is a really kind giving person
and she doesn’t want for much of anything. It makes her feel good to donate. We are proud of her.”Ranging from
$3 to $7, money from her sales is now donated to shelters, too. A few weeks ago, she donated more than $200 to the
Kingston Animal Shelter.
“They were happy and really grateful, which made me feel really good inside,” said Maria. “It makes me
happy to see how it’s impacted the people and dogs.”

An American company is preparing to use a series of driverless trucks to transport goods on a major public
highway. Aurora Innovation says it plans to begin the service later this year in Texas with 20 trucks. The trucks will
drive back and forth to transport goods between the cities of Dallas and Houston.
The company says it hopes to increase the service to thousands of trucks within three to four years. Aurora
says the transportation method could operate 24 hours a day. It aims to speed up the process and possibly save on
transportation costs.
Aurora will continue testing for the next nine months. If all goes well, as it has so far, the driverless program
will begin after that. At first, the trucks will be carrying goods for FedEx and other transportation partners between
the companies’ processing centers.
Since 2021, Aurora trucks have already carried goods for over 1 million kilometers on public roads. But those
vehicles all had human safety drivers sitting inside.
The company said there had been three accidents related to those trucks. And it said all of the accidents were
the result of mistakes by human drivers of other vehicles. The accidents were not serious and no one was hurt in
them. And in each case, the Aurora truck was able to safely pull off to the side of the road.
Progress in the US on driverless technology has slowed in recent years. Several companies have already made
plans to start self-driving taxi services in big cities. But those efforts have repeatedly been put off.
Aurora and other companies believe that years of testing proves that their trucks will actually be safer than
human-driven ones. They note that the vehicles’ advanced sensors (传感器) can “see” farther than any human eyes
can. And the trucks never get tired as humans do. They also are not affected by alcohol or drugs.
8. What do we know about the test of the driverless program
A. It is getting along smoothly. B. It has received lots of complaints.
C. It has been conducted throughout America. D. It is far from satisfactory.
9. Which of the following was responsible for the Aurora truck accidents
A. Careless passers-by. B. Other vehicles’ human drivers.
C. Drivers in Aurora trucks. D. The imperfect system of the trucks.
10. What’s the main idea of the last paragraph
A. The advantages of driverless trucks. B. The weaknesses of traditional trucks.
C. The development of driverless vehicles. D. The technology used in the driverless trucks.
11. Which can be the best title for the text
A. Driverless Trucks Save Transportation Costs
B. Driverless Technology Is Developing Slowly
C. Driverless Trucks Will Appear on US Highways
D. Driverless Trucks Will Replace Regular Ones in US
D
Do you know anything about galaxies (星系) Are you interested in them How many galaxies can you name
Researchers have identified two ancient star groups that appear to be among the Milky Way Galaxy’s earliest parts.
The groups are named after the Hindu gods Shakti and Shiva. They were discovered using observations from the
European Space Agency’s Gaia space telescope (望远镜).
Scientists wrote in a study that the groups might be the remains of two galaxies that united with the early
pieces of the Milky Way 12 billion years ago. They say the discovery offers new information about how our galaxy
formed.
The Milky Way Galaxy is made up of hundreds of billions of stars. It is a large, flat circle about 100,000 light
years across. A light year is the distance light travels in a year. Experts say the study might have identified the last
event before the Milky Way Galaxy began to take the shape it has today.
The European Space Agency sent up Gaia in 2013. The space telescope is helping to create the largest and
most complete 3D map of the Milky Way Galaxy. Gaia is gauging the positions, distances, and movements of the
stars. This data enabled researchers to find Shakti and Shiva.
The study builds on another recent discovery. In 2022, scientists using Gaia data identified what they called
the “poor old heart” of the Milky Way Galaxy. It is made up of a population of stars from the earliest period of the
galaxy found near its center.
The stars that make up Shiva and Shakti are different chemically from most of the Milky Way Galaxy’s other
stars. They are called “metal poor” because of the amount of heavy element s they contain. For example, the stars
have less iron, carbon, and oxygen than similar stars in other parts of the galaxy. Heavier elements first formed
inside the universe’s earliest population of stars. When these stars blew up at the end of their life cycles, the
elements were then sent out into space.
12. What’s the author's purpose in raising the questions in the first paragraph
A. To raise some doubts. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To make a survey about galaxies. D. To encourage readers to research galaxies.
13. What can be learnt from paragraph 3
A. The size of the Milky Way Galaxy.
B. The forming time of the Milky Way Galaxy.
C. The events the Milky Way Galaxy has experienced.
D. The tools the scientists used to make the discovery.
14. What does the underlined word “gauging” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Following. B. Connecting. C. Measuring. D. Controlling.
15. How do the newly discovered star groups differ from the others
A. They have a larger weight. B. They take a strange shape.
C. They are further away from Earth. D. They contain less amount of heavy elements.

73-year-old Barbara sat at a bus stop on a rainy evening, thinking of the past and wishing to find her purpose
in life.
A sudden sound awakened her. She got up and slowly approached the bus, as people aboard impatiently waited
for her to get on quickly so the bus could start soon. Barbara looked around for an empty seat but found none and
nobody wanted to give their seat to her. As the helpless woman looked toward the farther corner of the bus, she saw
a little boy waving at her, smiling.
Barbara thought the boy had mistaken her for someone else. Minutes later, he pushed through the crowd, held
her hand and took her to his seat. Barbara sat down and thanked the boy. A young woman near her smiled and said,
“It’s okay. David was just doing his job!” She introduced herself as the boy’s mother, Kristen.
Then a conversation started between them, from which Barbara learnt more about the mother and son.
In fact, the boy’s father died two years ago, leaving the mother with a great debt (债务) to pay and five little
kids to feed. Every day was already a terrible struggle for them. To make matters worse, the youngest son of the
family, Kevin, fell seriously ill and was battling for his life in the hospital now.
A strange feeling of sadness and pity struck Barbara. Moved by the single mother’s story, Barbara wanted to
help. She felt Kristen was like her when she was at Kristen’s age: her husband and daughter died of illness many
years ago.

47. 范文
So Barbara asked Kristen how she might help her. Kristen hesitated for a moment, unsure if it was appropriate
to accept help from a stranger. But seeing the kindness in Barbara’s eyes, she reluctantly shared her struggles. “The
hospital bills are piling up, and with my husband gone, I’m struggling to keep up,” Kristen explained, her voice
shaking with emotion. “And Kevin’s treatment...it’s so expensive. I don’t know how much longer we can hold on.”
Barbara listened intently, her heart heavy with sadness. She knew she had to do something. “Please, let me help,”
Barbara said firmly. “I’ll do whatever I can to ease your burden.”
The next day, Barbara arrived at the hospital with a box of money. It was the result of her life savings, a small
fortune she had been saving for a rainy day, but now she knew exactly where it needed to go. Kristen was surprised
and overwhelmed when she saw Barbara enter the hospital room, her eyes brimming with tears of gratitude. “This
is too much,” Kristen protested, but Barbara shook her head. “It’s not enough to cover everything, but it’s a start,”
she said softly. “And I’ll keep looking for ways to help. Kevin deserves every chance to get better.” As Barbara left
the hospital, she felt a sense of purpose she hadn’t felt in years. She realized that by helping others, she was finding
her own purpose in life.
