When I was 20, my long distance friend and I were in need of a reunion after three years apart. We decided to book a holiday with a tour company to New Zealand.
Not a day of the trip went by where I didn’t have a smile on my face. Whether it’s skydiving over a volcano or jumping off the tallest building in New Zealand, I enjoyed a lot of excitement and adventure. But one thing I had never done was a tandem jump (串联跳伞). So my friend and I decided to challenge ourselves at the Canyon Swing, which was a 60-metre free fall, two people getting to stay upstanding in a protective belt.
After a few failed attempts to jump, we knew it was time to be brave. We walked slowly to the platform (跳台),afraid to look straight down. With our throats feeling tight and hearts beating out of our chests, we finally got the courage to step off the platform.
My body tightened and I was sure my heart would explode as we fell quickly down towards the rough rocks below. Our hair flying wildly in the wind, our faces frozen in place, the view of the cliff and surrounding trees became just a blur (模糊) of greens and browns rushing past our eyes.
The fall felt both lightning quick and like a long, dull movie. For a moment that felt like forever, my mind completely emptied. I didn’t even realize I had been screaming the whole time until we were at the end of the rope, gently swinging above the clear water under us. Joyful and light headed, we just stayed there swinging and laughing with delight while our bodies shook.
It was terrifying but I truly had the time of my life!

C.Challenging but flat. D.Easy but exciting.
We often hear honesty is the best policy, and no one likes to be called a liar. But is dishonesty always wrong
Not necessarily.
According to psychologists, there are two types of lies: lies that help your relationships and the people around you are called pro-social lies; and lies that hurt them are called antisocial lies.
How often have you clicked “Like” on Wechat Moment, not because you actually like what your friends posted, but because you want to show your support This white lie is an example of a pro-social lie. But when people tell lies on social networks to make their own lives seem more exciting, or to make others jealous, this is antisocial lying.
Workplace lies range from harmless lies to destructive untruthful statements. An example of a pro-social workplace lie is complimenting someone on their presentation —even though it was only average —because you know they were nervous beforehand. In this case your intention is simply to protect your colleague’s feelings. However, people sometimes tell bigger lies at work for the purpose of avoiding blame or to stay on the boss’s good side. These are antisocial lies. They are antisocial because your boss is likely to discover the truth and as a result, will probably stop trusting you.
Lying is also a significant part of the natural world. So it’s little wonder we resort(求助)to it almost by instinct. Human babies sometimes pretend to cry, check to see if anyone is listening, and then start crying again. By the age of five, children learn to say things that are completely untrue, and most nine-year-olds have mastered keeping secrets to protect themselves.
Lying can be incredibly harmful to our relationships and to the people around us. But that’s only true for antisocial lies. Pro-social lies have the opposite effect—they can actually help us.
28.What may help us tell a pro-social lie from an antisocial lie
A.The purpose it serves. B.The way it is told.
C.The occasion where it is told. D.The people it is told to.
29.What does the underlined word “complimenting” probably mean in paragraph5
A.Criticizing. B.Praising. C.Remarking. D.Claiming.
30.Why does the author mention bigger lies at work
A.They help with hiding the truth.
B.They show the intention of protecting others.
C.They prove that workplace lies can be destructive.
D.They tend to avoid blame or to stay on the boss’s good side.
31.What’s the text intended to do
A.To warn that lies could harm us.
B.To remind that honesty is the best policy.
C.To make it clear that lying is a second nature.
D.To persuade that there are some lies that we need to tell.
A new study proves when their teenagers cut back on social media use, they seem to feel better about themselves. Helen Thai, a doctoral student in psychology at McGill University, conducted the study. She said the research came from her own personal experiences. “I couldn’t help but compare myself when I was using social media, making me unsatisfied with my self-image.” Thai says. Although she was aware that social media posts often presented images that can be unrealistic in real life, it still had a negative impact on her. So, Thai and a team of researchers decided to test whether reduced time on social media would increase self-confidence in body image.
They hired a few hundred volunteers, aged 14-18, all of whom had experienced signs of anxiety or depression, which could make them easier to be affected by social media. Half of the teens were asked to reduce their social media to 60 minutes a day for three weeks. The other half continued to use social media freely, which averaged about three hours per day. The researchers gave the teens surveys at the beginning and end of the study. It included statements such as “I’m pretty happy about the way I look,” and “I am satisfied with my weight.”
Among the group that cut social media use, the overall score on appearance satisfaction improved from 2.95 to 3.15 on a 5 point scale. “This may seem like a small change, but any change in such a short period of time is striking,” the authors say.
“This research showed promising results that weight and appearance confidence can improve when people cut back on social media use,” wrote Thai. Thai says it’s encouraging that teens were willing to cut back screen time, even for three weeks. It’s also worth experimenting this approach with other groups, such as people with or at risk of eating disorders.
32.What inspired Thai to do the research
A.Her major. B.Online posts. C.Her experience. D.Social pressure.
33.What do the volunteers have in common
A.Family background. B.Mental problems.
C.Learning abilities. D.Body shape.
34.What did Thai think of the result of their study
A.It proved their expectation. B.It made them disappointed.
C.It changed their first idea. D.It needed further study.
35.What is a suitable title for the text
A.Higher confidence, more image satisfaction
B.Less social media use, less image anxiety
C.To be a social media addict or not
D.Social media, love at first sight

The man was kind of small, but to a five-year-old, he was a giant. Cherry-scented smoke from Grandpa’s pipe kept the hungry mosquitoes at bay. Now and again, he blew a smoke ring and laughed as I tried to target the hole with my finger.
We sat side by side on the old wooden stairs that hot summer evening, watching the traffic, counting cars and trying to guess the color of the next one to turn the corner. We watched the sun go down behind the old Texaco service station across the busy street, which I was never allowed to cross unless accompanied by an adult.
My grandfather was baby-sitting while my mother, father and grandmother went out. While my two baby brothers slept inside the house, my three older siblings (兄弟姐妹) played with friends around the corner, where I was not allowed to go. I stayed with Grandpa, and that was okay with me. “Thirsty ” Grandpa asked, never removing the pipe from his mouth. “Yes,” was my reply. “How would you like to run over to the gas station there and get yourself a bottle of Coke ” I couldn’t believe my ears. On my family’s modest income, Coke was not a part of our budget or diet. “Okay,” I replied shyly, already wondering how I would get across the street.
He stretched his long leg out straight and reached his huge hand deep into the pocket. Opening his fist, he exposed several silver coins. He instructed me to pick out one. After he deposited the rest of the change back into his pocket, he stood up. “Okay,” he said, helping me down the stairs and to the curb (马路沿儿).
“I’m going to stay here and keep an ear out for the babies. I’ll tell you when it’s safe to cross. You go over to the Coke machine, get your Coke out and come back. Wait for me to tell you when it’s safe to cross back.” My heart pounded. Excitement took my breath away.

He pressed the button for the ground floor and the lift started going down but then stopped. He pressed the button again but nothing happened. He pressed the alarm and shouted, but nobody heard him. Most people had already gone home. Peter tried to phone his wife, but his mobile didn’t work in the lift. He couldn’t do anything. He just sat on the floor and hoped maybe somebody would realize what had happened, but on.
Saturday and Sunday, Peter knew nobody would be there. He slept most of the time to forget how hungry he was. So he was in the lift the whole weekend from Friday evening until Monday morning. At eight o’clock when the office workers arrived, they phoned the emergency number and somebody came and repaired the lift. Peter was very happy to get out. He hadn’t eaten since Friday afternoon and was very hungry. The first thing Peter did was to phone his wife to say that he was okay. Peter will soon be the fittest man in his office. Dear schoolmates,
Because of water pollution and ever-lasting population, human beings face serious water crisis. Aimed at saving water, the water-saving program has been held recently in our school. As for us students, it’s essential and vital to participate in it.
As a matter of fact, there are many phenomena of water wasting in our daily life. For example, many students spend too much time having a shower and don’t turn off the tap immediately after washing hands, both of which lead to water wasting. Therefore, effective measures should be taken to raise everyone’s awareness of saving water. First we can take a bath instead of taking a shower, and switch off the tap at once after washing hands. What’s more, reusing water is also a good way to save water.
My dear friends, let’s join hands to take action immediately. Every effort counts.

Grandpa held my hand tightly. We stepped off the curb and not until he confirmed I was safe to cross did he let go of my hand. “Go for it.” Grandpa said, patting me on the shoulder gently. On hearing that, I dashed out, overwhelmed with joy. I ran faster than ever before, my coin held tightly in my sweaty palm. The street seemed wide. I was wondering if I would make it when I arrived at the other side. Turning around, I saw my Grandpa. There he was, standing exactly where I had left him, I waved to my Grandpa proudly.
My heart pounded more wildly as I approached the Coke machine. I couldn’t wait to walk directly to it and fed the coin. I had dreamed about this moment many times. The big old monster greedily swallowed my coin. Reaching up on tiptoes, I grabbed one. Coke in hand, I proudly marched back. Grandpa was waiting patiently, his face spreading in a satisfied smile. Looking around, he yelled, “Come on, now.” I moved swiftly across the street and threw myself into his arms. What a thrilling experience! Years later, whenever think of my Grandpa, his love and warmth is still like a road to accompany me through my life.
