It has been nearly 11 days since the earthquake and its aftershocks struck the Turkey-Syria border, and rescues are still underway. As teams of doctors, firefighters, police officers, construction workers tried to search through the rubble (瓦砾) of fallen buildings, they were uncovering surviving people as well as animals. Ali Cakas saved a scared cat from the rubble, and the kitty has been glued to his side ever since.
A video shows the man, still in uniform and protective equipment, taking a picture with the cat on his shoulder. The black-spotted cat clearly has an appreciation for his hero, as he does not move from the firefighter's side even for a moment. "We named it Enkaz which means rubble in Turkish, because we brought it out of the ruins," the firefighter says. "It might sound a little off-putting, but we wanted it to be a memory this way."
As heart-warming as this rescue has been, people online have also found a way to sympathize (同情) with the cat while showing respect for Cakas. "Uh...not for nothing but I would also not leave this guys side," said Twitter user Paula Matiz. Another person admitted, "I don't know who is cuter...the man or the kitty." They all agree that Cakas has done something truly wonderful, saving the life of a sweet cat.
So far, no one has come forward to claim Enkaz, but the firefighter is keeping him safe, in the meantime, providing food and shelter. "I see sadness in this cat," the firefighter said after rescuing him. "I keep it by my side in case the owner comes, but if the owner doesn't come out, I'm thinking of taking him with me. It will be a memory." Fortunately, Enkaz has found a safe shelter after everything he has been through, so we hope this is the start of a beautiful relationship between the cat and his rescuer.

25.Why did Cakas name the cat Enkaz

There is an English saying that "Laughter(笑) is the best medicine." Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found that laughter can really improve people's health.
Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their hearts, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, makes the heart beat quicker and makes people breathe deeper; it also works on several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.
Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effects of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group that tolerated(忍耐)the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny program. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemical in the brain which diminishes both stress and pain.
As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they help to improve their patients' condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.
28.According to the passage, which of the following statements is WRONG
A.Laughter is good for health
B.Laughter can make you become old quickly
C.Laughter helps to reduce pain.
D.Laughter, just like physical exercise, is good for our body.
29.The underlined word "diminishes" in the third paragraph means "____".
A.delays B.prevents C.increases D.reduces
30.Why do some doctors hold laughter clinics
A.Because they want to earn more money.
B.Because they think they will help the patients recover from illnesses.
C.Because they want to improve their patients' condition.
D.Because they want their patients to practice how to laugh
31.What would be the best title for this passage
A.Both laughter and physical exercise are good for health
B.Laughter clinics help patients improve their condition
C.Laughter can reduce the effects of pain
D.Laughter is the best medicine.
【答案】28.B
29.D
30.C
31.D
They have found that laughter can really improve people's health." It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise." Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effects of pain on the body."
The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemicals in the brain which diminish both stress and pain."
As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they help to improve their patients' condition by encouraging them to laugh."

Chinese astronauts have successfully grown rice seedlings (幼苗) aboardthe Tiangong space station and this experiment may offer key insights into howastronauts can grow food to support long-term space missions, experts saidon Monday. This experiment is the first to produce the complete life cycle of
the plant, which begins with a seed and ends with a mature () plantproducing new seeds.
The breakthrough was conducted in the Wentian space laboratory, whichwas launched into orbit on July 28, 2022. Three astronauts were conducting theexperiment smoothly and testing the plants according to the plan.
"The rice seedlings are growing very wel," said Zheng Huiqiong, aresearcher of the task, adding that the experiment also contained seedlings of asmall flowering plant often used by scientists to study mutations (变异). "Theastronauts will keep monitoring the plants, and if it is successful, they willcollect the newly produced seeds and bring them back to Earth for furtherstudies," she noted.
The flowering stage is crucial for plant reproductive development. "Wewant to investigate how micro-gravity can affect the plant flowering time andwhether it is possible to use the micro-gravity environment to control therelated process," she said.
Since the 1980s, China has been taking seeds of rice and other crops tospace to help them mutate and produce higher yields once they were planted onEarth. But growing rice in orbit is a different challenge due to the toughconditions of space such as micro-gravity and lack of air.
Rice has been a main food for astronauts since the early days of spaceexploration. Freeze-dried chicken and rice was the menu for the Apollo /mission, which carried the first humans to land on the moon in July 1969.
"But if we want to land on and explore Mars, bringing food from Earth isnot enough to provide for the astronauts' long journey and mission in space. We have to find a food source for long term space explorations, Zheng added.

What do you do when you receive an invitation to an event that you do not want to attend or that you cannot attend due to your busy schedule In that case, we simply can't act on everything our heart feels. 36. Here are some right ways to decline (拒绝) an invitation without hurting others' feelings.
Respond in a timely manner.
 37. It's OK to put off responding if you're unsure at first, but give yourself a deadline to figure it out — and stick to it. Always respond to invitations in a timely manner.
 38.
It's OK to say you're sorry that you can't make an event, but it's better to redefine it as a positive. Rather than apologizing, say how happy you are that they invited you and that while you can't make it this time, you look forward to getting together with them in the future.
Don't say "maybe".
Procrastinating (拖延) by saying "maybe" usually means it's a no. 39. Saying "maybe" is a way of making yourself feel better, but it leaves the other person hanging, which is unkind.
Don't try to control the other person's feelings.
There's the assumption that we can decline without hurting anyone else's feelings, but we can't ensure the other person's experience. They may feel sad or disappointed when you decline, but that's OK. 40.
A. Focus on the positive.
B. Be honest but not too honest.
C. Don't leave the host hanging.
D. It's fine to decline via digital means.
E. Most people will understand that life just gets busy.
F. So just go ahead and say no if that's really what you mean.
G. Instead, we should learn how to politely say "no" to an invitation.
【答案】36.G;37.C;38.A;39.F;40.E
In that case, we simply can't act on everything our heart feels. Instead, we should learn how to politely say "no" to an invitation.

Five minutes later, she came out and walked out of the cafe without looking back.
Mary saw the handphone on the table. She quickly told Keith,"Keith, the girl left behind her handphone. "
Keith looked at the handphone. It took his breath away. It was one of the latest models on the market. Keith had always wanted a handphone. But his parents had told him, "You don't need one. You can always use the house phone. "
He stared at it for some minutes. Then he said slowly, pausing on every word,"I want to take the handphone. "
Mary could not believe her ears. She merely stared at her brother. "You can't! What if the owner comes to look for it "
Having made the decision,Keith quickly grabbed the handphone and put it in his schoolbag. Then, he took Mary's hand and led her out of the cafe quickly.
Once back home, Keith locked his house door with trembling hands. Inside his room, he took out the piece of beauty. Oh, he liked it so much. Now he had his own handphone. Soon, he was polishing it happily.
But Mary told him, "Keith, you cannot keep the handphone. What will you tell Father about this He will ask you how you got the handphone. "
Keith said quickly, "I will say a friend lent it to me. "
Mary said, "Now you are lying too. " Oh dear! When had Keith turned so dishonest
Then Mary saw a house phone number on the plastic cover of the handphone. "This is the girl's phone number. Why don't we just call this number We will talk to her and ask her to come and take back her handphone. " She was trying to talk some sense into him.

24.What is Ali Cakas

C.A firefighter. D.A construction worker.

32.What's the significance of Chinese recent space rice experiment
