Skiing has always been a big part of Mikaela Shiffrin's life. Her dad ski raced all through college and her mom raced and coached skiing. The Shiffrins taught Mikaela and her brother, Taylor, to ski at a very young age. At two and a half years old, Mikaela made her first ski run down her driveway on plastic skis.
Mikaela loved skiing. From ages 8 to 11, she did hundreds of training runs on small hills to learn the skills of slalom skiing When Mikaela was 11, she began to learn at the Burke Mountain Academy, a Vermont boarding school for skiers. She took classes, studied, and practiced her skiing. According to Burke Mountain Academy headmaster Kirk Dwyer, "What separated Mikaela from others was the degree of her commitment (投入) to be the best. Mikaela practiced more than anyone and believed in herself then and now." At age 14, Mikaela began her international career when she raced in the world championships for 13- and 14-year-olds. And she won!
By the time she was 17, she had already won her first World Cup race. "Living away from home four and five months at a time can be difficult," Mikaela says. "But it can also be exciting. I'm getting to see the world." When Mikaela began ski racing in Europe, her mother, Eileen, stayed with her. She worked as her high-school teacher while they were on the road. "She has always been a super-hard worker," says Eileen.
For Mikaela, working hard is a full-time job. Even her off-season is work time. "If you want something, just try your best," she says. At the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, 18-year-old Mikaela Shiffrin became the youngest slalom skier ever to win an Olympic gold medal.
22.According to the text, Mikaela ____.
A.learned to ski by herself
B.was born into a skiing family
C.first skied when she was 3 years old
D.got to know slalom skiing at the age of 14
23.What Kirk Dwyer said suggested that ____.
A.Mikaela was cleverer than the other kids
B.Mikaela was too young to learn skiing
C.Mikaela was a hard-working girl
D.Mikaela was a slow learner
24.Who helped Mikaela with her school lessons when she traveled to Europe
A.Her mother. B.Her father.
C.Kirk Dwyer. D.Taylor Shiffrin.
25.What would be the best title for the text
A.The 2014 Winter Olympic Games
B.The Burke Mountain Academy
C.An introduction to slalom skiing
D.A young skier's fight for success
【答案】22.B
23.C
24.A

Skiing has always been a big part of Mikaela Shiffrin's life. Her dad ski raced all through college and her mom raced and coached skiing. The Shiffrins taught Mikaela and her brother, Taylor, to ski at a very young age. At two and a half years old, Mikaela made her first ski run down her driveway on plastic skis."
According to Burke Mountain Academy headmaster Kirk Dwyer, ‘What separated Mikaela from others was the degree of her commitment (投入) to be the best. Mikaela practiced more than anyone and believed in herself then and now.'"
When Mikaela began ski racing in Europe, her mother, Eileen, stayed with her. She worked as her high-school teacher while they were on the road." 故选A。
According to Burke Mountain Academy headmaster Kirk Dwyer, ‘What separated Mikaela from others was the degree of her commitment (投入) to be the best. Mikaela practiced more than anyone and believed in herself then and now.'" For Mikaela, working hard is a full-time job. Even her off-season is work time. ‘If you want something, just try your best,' she says. At the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, 18-year-old Mikaela Shiffrin became the youngest slalom skier ever to win an Olympic gold medal."

Thirsty or stressed plants do not suffer in silence. Instead, they make high-pitched(尖锐的) sounds, according to a study published in the journal Cell.
The reason why you have probably never heard the plants' sounds is that most humans are only able to hear sounds as high as 20 kilohertz (kHz), but the plants made sounds mostly between 40 and 80 kHz, Lilach Hadany, a co-author of the study at Tel Aviv University, tells Business Insider's Marianne Guenot.
Plants, obviously, do not have organs to make sounds. Lilach says, the present popular theory on how they make noises centers on plants' xylem(木质部), the tubes that transport water from their roots to their stems and leaves. In the process of transporting, when an air bubble(气泡) forms or breaks in the xylem, it might make a little noise; bubbles are more likely to form when a plant is suffering from drought. But the exact process requires further study, Lilach explains.
To listen in to plants, Lilach and her co-workers placed tobacco and tomato plants in small boxes equipped with microphones. First, they stopped providing water to some plants in the boxes and cut the stems of others. Then, the microphones were used to pick up any noises made by the plants even though they couldn't hear them. Researchers found that the sounds did show the specific types of stresses plants were experiencing. Thirsty tomato and tobacco plants made an average of about 35 and 11 sounds per hour, individually, while cut tomato and tobacco plants made 25 and 15 noises per hour.
In theory, these recorded sounds could help farmers know about which crops are most in need of water. "When more and more areas are exposed to drought due to climate change, efficient water use becomes even more important, for both food security and ecology," Lilach with her co-workers write.
26.Why do humans fail to hear the sounds of plants
A.The sounds are stressful.
B.The sounds are beyond human's hearing range.
C.The sounds are low-pitched.
D.The sounds are between 20kHz and 40kHz.
27.What might cause thirsty plants to produce sounds
A.Suffering from lack of air.
B.Stems and leaves transporting water.
C.More air bubbles gathering in the roots.
D.Air bubbles' forming or breaking in the xylem.
28.What did Lilach and her co-workers find in the study
A.Noises can be picked up by microphones.
B.Plants make more sounds in small boxes.
C.Cut plants suffer the same as thirsty ones.
D.Different sounds indicate plants' stress types.
29.What's the potential use of the sound recordings
A.To harvest the crops. B.To solve the food problem.
C.To locate the thirsty crops. D.To prevent climate change.
【答案】26.D
27.D
28.D
29.B
The reason why you have probably never heard the plants' sounds is that most humans are only able to hear sounds as high as 20 kilohertz (kHz), but the plants made sounds mostly between 40 and 80 kHz, Lilach Hadany,
Lilach says, the present popular theory on how they make noises centers on plants' xylem(木质部), the tubes that transport water from their roots to their stems and leaves. In the process of transporting, when an air bubble(气泡) forms or breaks in the xylem, it might make a little noise; bubbles are more likely to form when a plant is suffering from drought.
Researchers found that the sounds did show the specific types of stresses plants were experiencing.
In theory, these recorded sounds could help farmers know about which crops are most in need of water. "When more and more areas are exposed to drought due to climate change, efficient water use becomes even more important, for both food security and ecology," Lilach with her co-workers write.

Indoor food growing operations are seeing both successes and failures in the United States. Some companies in the food industry are investing (投资) even as competitors fail.
California-based Plenty Unlimited this summer began working on $300 million indoor plants, while Kroger announced that it would be increasing its availability of vertically (垂直地) farmed produce. Meanwhile, two indoor farming companies that got strong backing—New Jersey's AeroFarms and Kentucky's AppHarvest—filed for financial failure and reorganization. And a five-year-old company in Detroit, Planted Detroit, shut its doors this summer.
The industry changes do not worry Jacob Portillo, a grower with Eden Green Technology, an indoor farming company. "The fact that some people are failing and other people are succeeding is going to happen in any industry you go to," he said.
Indoor farming refers to growing crops indoors, which experts sometimes call "controlled environment agriculture". There are different methods. One method called vertical farming involves putting produce from floor to ceiling, often under artificial lights and with the plants growing in nutrient-enriched water. Other growers are trying very large greenhouses, indoor beds of soil in big buildings and using special robots for parts of the farming process.
Supporters say growing indoors uses less water and land and permits food to be grown closer to consumers, saving on transport. Indoor growing is also a way to protect crops from increasingly extreme weather caused by climate change.
But critics question the sustainability (可持续性) of operations that can require a lot of energy for artificial lights. And they say paying for that light can make profitability impossible. Curt Covington of AgAmerica Lending, a private investment company centered on agriculture, is not convinced that indoor farming operations can work—except in special cases. Given the high cost of indoor operations, Covington said, "It's just hard to be very profitable."
30.What is Jacob Portillo's attitude to the indoor food growing industry
A.Positive. B.Worried. C.Unclear. D.Doubtful.
31.What can we learn about indoor farming
A.It takes a lot of manpower to take care of plants.
B.It means growing plants in water instead of soil.
C.It protects crops from increasingly extreme weather.
D.It is different from controlled environment agriculture.
32.Why did Curt Covington question indoor farming operations
A.They produce little food. B.They carry great cost.
C.They need sunlight. D.They lack investors.
33.What is the best title for the text
A.What Types of Food Can Be Grown Indoors
B.How Can You Grow Food Indoors Without Soil
C.Indoor Farming Companies Take Agriculture Indoors
D.Indoor Food Growing Operations Face an Uncertain Future
【答案】30.A

About a month ago, my husband and I found kindness in an unlikely place: standing in line at a Subway sandwich shop to pick up a quick dinner.
It was extremely busy on this particular night, and I noticed a dad behind us with his little girl, who looked to be around four. The man seemed as tired as my husband, but the little girl was cheerful and excited as she waited for her sandwich and cookie.
I watched as the man behind us got closer to the front of the line. He started to look worried. Right before we checked out, I heard the man say to the woman who had made his sandwiches that he was sorry to just leave his out because he didn't have enough money to pay for them all. He looked very embarrassed. His little girl continued jumping around excitedly.
I quietly asked the cashier to add the man's whole order to ours. I paid the $87.73, and we got out of there before the man behind us knew what had happened.
Like many others since COVID-19 hit, our family of five was living on one income. I was holding our debit card(and knew that we only had $90.16 in our account. That was all we would have until payday three days later. But still, it felt great to be able to help that family, even though we would be out of money for a few days.
What happened next was amazing. My husband went back to that Subway the next week to pick up five sandwiches that I thought would cost $44.58. There was $47 in our account. But it turned out that the dinner cost more than we had on the card. My husband told them to put his sandwich back because he couldn't afford it. Then he paid for the four sandwiches and headed to our car.
As he opened the door, one of the female workers ran to him.
……
The two men nodded at one another and went on their way.
As he opened the door, one of the female workers ran to him. When he was confusedly wondering what she was for, the worker handed him his sandwich. Without a word, she ran back into the store. With a grateful heart, he assumed that the lady had just given it to him. About two minutes later, he was getting ready to leave when he saw the same man and little girl from a week earlier. At that moment, my husband knew what had happened.
The two men nodded at one another and went on their way. Although they didn't say a word to each other, gratitude took roots in their hearts. They made sure for the second time that they both left the store with dinner for their families. My husband told me what had happened on arriving home. I was touched and lost in thought. In a world where distance means safety, it's refreshing and soul-lifting when someone does something kind for you, even if it's only at a local Subway.
As he opened the door, one of the female workers ran to him. With a grateful heart, he assumed that the lady had just given it to him. I was touched and lost in thought. In a world where distance means safety, it's refreshing and soul-lifting when someone does something kind for you, even if it's only at a local Subway.

28.What did Lilach and her co-workers find in the study
A.Noises can be picked up by microphones.
B.Plants make more sounds in small boxes.
C.Cut plants suffer the same as thirsty ones.

31.What can we learn about indoor farming
A.It takes a lot of manpower to take care of plants.
B.It means growing plants in water instead of soil.
C.It protects crops from increasingly extreme weather.
D.It is different from controlled environment agriculture.
32.Why did Curt Covington question indoor farming operations
A.They produce little food. B.They carry great cost.
C.They need sunlight. D.They lack investors.
33.What is the best title for the text
A.What Types of Food Can Be Grown Indoors
B.How Can You Grow Food Indoors Without Soil
