As April 18 marks the International Day for Monuments and Sites, also known as World Heritage Day, we’ve selected four archaeological(考古的) sites in China that deserve exploration.
Zhoukoudian, Beijing
Zhoukoudian, a UNESCO heritage site located 50 km from downtown Beijing, has been a significant site. At various parts of the site, scientists have unearthed the remains of early human “Peking Man” that date back more than 500,000 years, as well as of “Shandingdong Man”, who lived 30,000 years ago.
Sanxingdui Ruins site, Sichuan province
As one of the greatest archeological finds of the 20th century, the Sanxingdui Ruins are believed to be the remains of the Shu Kingdom, dating back at least 4,800 years and lasting over 2,000 years.
The ruins are located in Guanghan city in Southwest China’s Sichuan province, covering 12 square kilometers.

The Yinxu Ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Anyang city, Henan province, was an ancient capital of the Shang Dynasty (16th century BC-11th century BC).
Spreading across over 30 square kilometers, the site features the greatest number of oracle bone inscriptions(甲骨文) discovered so far in the world.
The Daming Palace, Shaanxi province
Famous for its super-large scale and magnificent buildings, Daming Palace was the main royal palace in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) where Tang emperors lived and dealt with state affairs.

It’s not every day you cross paths with a wandering robot in the woods. Matthew McCormack wasn’t dreaming when he came across a delivery robot in the woods of Northampton in the United Kingdom. “I spotted the robot while cycling in Lings Wood,” he told NPR over email. “We have them all over town for grocery deliveries, but I was surprised to see it so far from the shops, so I took a picture of it.”
Since McCormack, a history professor at the University of Northampton in England, shared that picture on Twitter, he has been enjoying some minor social media celebrity. He did take a bit of poetic license by tweeting, “On my bike ride this morning, I saw a delivery robot lost in the woods.”
McCormack said, “It doubtless knew where it was going and got there eventually, but it did seem curious moving slowly and making a sound along in woodland.”
His tweet, which he posted on May 15, has received more than 250,000 likes and well over 17,000 retweets. The company that makes these robots, Starship Technologies, has also been in touch with McCormack since his tweet. Apparently they “absolutely love” his message.
But why has this image tickled people so much McCormack believes it’s because this little lovely woodland robot buddy is a reminder of beloved robot characters such as R2-D2 and WALL-E, he said. “I think the image is resonating(共鸣) with people because it is funny but also amazing,” he said. “We often project personalities onto technology, and these little grocery robots are very cute.”
McCormack reports that people have come across this wandering traveler out in the woods. This particular robot seems to favor the wilderness to life in Northampton.
Why did the robot in Lings Wood surprise McCormack initially
Because it actually lost its way.
Because it was abandoned there.
Because it rode a bicycle by itself.
Because it seemed rare to appear there.
What can we learn about McCormack’s tweet
It is inspiring.
It is really poetic.
It is well received.
It is delicately written.
What does the underlined word “tickled” in paragraph 5 mean
Amused
Defeated
Frightened
D. Touched
What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs
The robot is frequently wandering in the wild.
McCormack has a special affection for robots.
Personalized robots own human-like emotions.
This robot enjoys the wildlife in Northampton.
C
There have been huge advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) programs that create art. The programs, creating artworks based on short descriptions, have amazed many people. They have also raised tough questions.
reported on Dall-E2, a tool from OpenAI. Dall-E2 uses AI to create incredible paintings, photos, and other artworks in different styles based on simple descriptions. Since then, OpenAI has changed its rules to allow anyone to sign up and use the tool. But it’s still putting strong controls on the art that can be created. Now several other AI tools work in similar ways. These new tools are free or cheap, and don’t have some of Dall-E2’s limits. Midjourney is a website that allows users to create images from short descriptions.
The new tools are entertaining and powerful. They allow people to quickly see almost any idea they can imagine, even if they aren’t artists. For creative workers, the tools allow them to quickly explore new ideas.
These new AI art tools are all trained in similar ways—using massive collections of pictures with matching descriptions. The programs begin to create new images with a random pattern of dots. Step by step, they use their training to change the pattern until parts of the image begin to match the description.
Artists are upset that they’re now competing against computers for attention, prizes and jobs. It’s hard for a single artist to compete against all the art and photography appearing on the Internet. The images and descriptions used to train these AI programs were taken from the Internet, therefore, the tools can produce images that aren’t appropriate. More importantly, the training images were used without permission, causing questions whether what these tools are doing is fair or legal. Once created, an artwork is protected by copyright. The creators of the training pictures—the photographers, the artists, and even the people in the pictures—haven’t given permission for their images to be used.
What can be inferred about Dall-E2
It is a news website intended for children.
It has certain limits on users’ artistic creation.
It is developed by OpenAI to create anything.
It is available for artists to improve themselves.
What aspect of AI art tools does paragraph 4 focus on
Their strong functions.
Their wide application.
Their working principle.
Their common features.
Which factor related to the AI art tools upsets artists most
The great creative ability beyond imagination.
The massive collecting capacity of the Internet.
The inappropriate artwork created by the tools.
The illegal use of training images from the Internet.
What makes the best title for the text
AI Art Tools: Newborn Innovations
AI Art Tools: Powerful Competitors
AI Art Tools Amaze or Upset Artists
AI Art Tools Improve Art Significantly

Do you ever wonder about what the term “locally-grown food” means Do you wonder where your food comes from Locally-grown food and sustainability are on the rise, and it’s important to know why this trend in farming matters.
Hawaii, in particular, is a pretty isolated place. About 85 percent of food is imported. Much of what gets to their table depends on what comes to use by ship. Sometimes, one notices there is no milk or other product left at the grocery story because there is a problem with a barge(驳船).
Steven Chiang, a professor from University of Hawaii, pointed out that in Hawaii, the cost of labor is high for people who might want to farm the land. Since many different groups or individuals own small pieces of land, getting access to farmland is also difficult.
However, Chiang added, “there are many benefits to growing food locally on the islands and elsewhere.” For one, they can hold onto traditions and the types of food they like. Food in soil will have the chance to mature more, and maybe absorb more nutrition. Areas of land that might be used for other things, like new apartment or office buildings, can be preserved. Also, plants can extract the carbon dioxide in the air, benefiting the environment.
Chiang said that there was more to locally-grown food than just those benefits. “Having local food helps make people aware of where their food comes from,” he said. When people are disconnected from the food system and don’t know where their food comes from, there’s a tendency to make potentially negative choices. “Because we’re so efficient at shipping and importing,” he added, “We don’t realize or know what it takes, and that can lead to poor decisions that can harm us all.”
So what can you do In Hawaii, there are many opportunities to volunteer at local farms. But in other areas around the world, you can do your part by supporting and buying locally-grown food. You can also help spread awareness by educating your friends and family. You can even grow your own food—in a container in your kitchen or in your backyard!
32.What can be inferred about Hawaii’s food supply
A. Hawaii relies heavily on imported food.
B. Hawaii’s cost of living is low for farmers.
C. Hawaii’s grocery stores are often short of milk.
D. Hawaii’s farmland is enough for all local needs.
33.Which is a benefit of growing food locally
A. Lowering the cost of local labor.
B. Increasing the variety of imported food.
C. Preserving land for non-agricultural use.
D. Offering quick access to imported food.
34.What is Chiang’s attitude towards locally-grown food
A. Negative. B. Doubtful. C. Undecided. D. Favorable.
35.What is the author’s purpose of writing the last paragraph
To encourage gardening at home.
To advocate sustainable practices.
To promote local farming in Hawaii.
To discourage buying imported food.

To read poetry like a poet
A great poem can be there for you. It can help you process sadness, anger or fear. 36 . Franny Choi, an educator, says some poems make her “get out of my chair and shout it from the rooftops.” Here are tips to help you meaningfully connect to a poem.
Don’t approach poetry like it’s school. The way to engage with a poem taught in school is by trying to understand it, master it and take an exam, which keeps us from developing personal relationships with poetry. 37 , due to no quiz at the end!
Don’t worry about “getting it”. People often pressure themselves to interpret a poem, or figure out what the poet conveyed. Don’t do it, says Mullen, a poet and professor. 38 : what overall impression do you get What ideas float around in mind “Those overall impressions, I think most of us do get,” says Mullen.
Read it out loud. “Poetry was an oral art form before anything else,” says Choi. “And much information can be gained from reading poems loud.” As an exercise, try reading a poem aloud in different ways: like tasting every word and every syllable; like explaining something tough to someone else. 39 .
40 . A poem might offer visual imagery. If not, go ahead and fill them in with your imagination. “Think of the poem like a movie director,” says Mullen, “What colors would you use What kind of setting is there ” These brain pictures will illuminate whatever it is you seem to be getting out of the poem.
Visualize the poem
Read a bunch of poetry
So rest easy when reading a poem
Or make you feel happy or excited
Instead, ask about your opinion of the poem
Or better yet, head to your local poetry circle
It may help further your knowledge of the poem

On their way, they crossed paths with the bull’s former owner. “Hey, old woman! Where are you taking my bull ” the man called out, with a mix of surprise and annoyance.
The old woman pulled herself up, her ancient back as straight as a sword, and she spoke with a tongue that was just as sharp: “Now listen, your bull was abandoned and full of suffering.”
“Right,” admitted the man. “He is very sick, and he smells rotten. We can’t stand his stench anymore, so we drove him into the woods to end his days.”
When he said this, the old woman glared angrily, she wagged her finger and declared, “It is wrong to abandon a living creature who has served you well, even if he is dying. I’m to take him home and look after him myself.”
The man laughed at her, shrugging in disbelief. “You’re wasting your time! He’ll never recover.” The old woman continued, leading the bull towards her home. The villagers whispered praises and words of support as she passed by.
When she reached home, she cleaned the bull, gave him water and medicine, and placed him on a comfortable bed of straw. His strength grew daily, and his once-dull coat became shining. The villagers

Word spread quickly to the bull’s previous owner. He came to the old woman’s house, saw the healthy bull and demanded the return of his valuable animal. The villagers were astonished to hear this. The old woman still stood her ground, telling him firmly: “In days of despair and sickness, you abandoned this bull, left him to weep. I nurtured him with love and care. His strength restored. He’ll stay with me, no more to roam. He is no longer yours. He’s found a new home.”
The villagers cheered for the old woman. Their applause echoed through the valley. “Go away!” they shouted at the previous owner, heavily waving their arms in protest. “How dare you try to take back the bull! You heartlessly abandoned him in the woods to die, just because you couldn’t tolerate his natural scent. But the brave old woman found him and nursed him back to health with her tender care and expertise. He is hers now.” As their voices rose, the previous owner felt the weight of their
determination. Feeling deeply ashamed, he slowly backed away with his head hung low.

M: Yes, definitely! We were following a baby elephant once. It walked away from its mother and into a small pool. Its mother thought we were going to harm the baby, so she attacked our vehicle. It was scary, but luckily, we were okay. It’s important to note that normally, elephants are very friendly animals.

When I visited the fascinating art galleries in Italy, I discovered an extraordinary sculptor named Aldo Da Luca by chance. I came across his showroom and noticed a clothesline hanging across the showroom window. Why on earth would a sculptor have his T-shirts and socks hanging up to dry in his showroom window “That’s odd,” I thought. So I decided to go inside. Once inside, I saw Aldo Da Luca working on a carving. He was making a jacket and it was very realistic. It was only then that I realized that everything in the showroom window was actually made of wood, including a coat on the wall and a hat above it. Aldo Da Luca told me that he takes much of his inspiration from the ordinary objects we wear or use every day. He also expressed interest in designing pieces that represent abstract ideas as they provide different challenges for him as an artist. Da Luca’s showroom was undoubtedly one of my unforgettable experiences in Italy. I couldn’t leave there without choosing a piece for my parents.
