The Past Continuous Tense
过去进行时由be动词的过去式was/were加动词现在分词构成。过去进行时主要表示过去某个时刻或过去一段时间正在进行的动作。过去进行时常与表示过去的时间状语如then，at that time，at this time yesterday，a moment ago等连用，或者用另一动作来表示过去的时间。
It was raining all day yesterday.
昨天下了一整天雨。
They were playing basketball at four o’clock yesterday afternoon.

1、The telephone rings while Jane is practicing the violin.简在练习小提琴的时候，电话铃响了。
While在此意为“当...的时候，与...同时”，引导时间状语从句。从句中要用延续性动词。辨析：我出门不在时，有人破门而入。误：Somebody broke in while I went out.正：Somebody broke in while I was out.
比较：when 和while的用法
①when是at or during the time that, 既可以表示一个时间点（when引导的从句中谓语动词用非延续性动词），也可以表示一段时间（when引导的从句中谓语动词用延续性动词）。表示时间点时，从句用一般过去时或一般现在时；
表示时间段时，从句用进行时态。主从句所述动作、事情可同时发生，也可有先后。
我们到达那里时正在下雪。
When we got there,it was snowing.（同时）他做完工作就回家了。
He went home when he finished his work.(表示动作的先后）
②while是during the time that，只指一段时间，即while引导的从句中谓语动词必须用延续性动词，也就是从句用进行时态。
主从句中两个延续性动作同时发生。爸爸看电视的时候妈妈在做饭。
Mother was cooking while father was watching TV.
因此when引导的时间状语从句中的动词可以是终止性动词，也可以是延续性动词，而while从句中的动词必须是延续性动词。
e.g.
While/When I was having supper, someone knocked at the door.(was having supper为一个时间段，have为延续性动词)
When you leave the room, please turn off the lights.(leave为非延续性动词，因此从句不能用while引导)
2. Hold the line, please. 请别挂断电话 。 此句是一种常用的电话交际用语，类似的表达还有：Hold on(for a moment ), please · 请稍等 / 别挂断。Wait/Just a moment, please.请等一会儿。如 ： —May I speak to Ann？ 我可以和安通话吗？ —Hold on, please. 请稍等。
3. I called you to go to the English Corner but no one answered.
我打电话叫你去英语角,但是没人接 。
call sb. 给某人打电话, 类似的同义词组还有 ring sb;phone sb; give sb. a ring; ring sb up ； call sb up 等 。 如 ： I gave my mother a ring yesterday afternoon. 我昨天下午给我妈妈打了个电话 。
4.—What were you doing at this time yesterday
昨天这个时候你在干什么？ —I was doing some cleaning. 我在打扫 。
(1) 此句是过去进行时。过去进行时表示在过去 某一时刻或某一段时间内正在进行的动作或发生 的状态。由was/were + v-ing 形式构成。它与过去 某一特定的时间状语连用。 如 ：at this time yesterday ，at that time ，at 6 0'clock yesterday morning 或以 when 引导的谓语动词是一般过去 时的时间状语从句等 。
(2) do some cleaning 打扫 。类似的用法还有 ：
do some washing 做一些洗涮的工作； do some reading 读书 ； do some shopping 购物
