On May 7th, 1902, on the island of Martinique, Ludgar Sylbaris, the town's drunk and troublemaker, got thrown into prison. However, it turned out to be the luckiest day of his life.
Saint Pierre on Martinique was at the time known as the Paris of Caribbean. It had a big population of 30, 000 people and was a cultural centre. Martinique is home to Mount Pelee, one of the most active volcanoes in the world.
In the weeks before Ludgar Sylbaris was thrown into prison, the volcano on the island of Martinique was showing signs of volcanic activity. Without modern Volcanology, people still sensed that something was going to happen, but they didn't have a really good sense of how big or how dangerous the threat was. Thousands of people left the countryside and came to the city of Saint Pierre because they thought it would be safer there. That was a terrible mistake.
The day after Ludgar Sylbaris went into that prison cell, Mount Pelee exploded. And in an instant 3, 000 people were killed. A pressure wave flattened every single building. Anyone who was unlucky enough to be outside was instantly burned to death. Those who were in shelter found themselves choking as their lungs were burned from the inside out. There was really no escape except for one person, Ludgar Sylbaris.
The cell he was in had been built as an armory (军械库) . So it had been built within the thick walls and it happened that the only opening in it faced away from the eruption. Even so, super-hot air began to force its way underneath the door. And as his cell heated to extremely high temperatures, he was forced to take off his clothes, push them underneath the door and he peed (小便) on the clothes just to try to keep the hot air from entering. He was still badly burned and wasn't found until four days later when rescuers heard his cries.
21.What caused so many people to die in the volcano eruption
A.Shortage of survival skills.
B.Ignorance of modern Volcanology.
C.Lack of good judgement of the threat.
D.Unawareness of the volcanic activity signs.
22.Which of the following is the right order according to the passage
a. The volcano of Mount Pelee erupted.
b. Buildings were flattened and no one escaped.
c. Thousands of people fled to the city of Saint Pierre.
d. Mount Pelee was showing signs of volcanic activity.
e. Ludgar Sylbaris managed to save himself and was rescued.
A.dbace B.abdce C.adceb D.dcabe
23.Which of the following is true according to the last paragraph
A.The cell's opening faced the eruption.
B.The cell was far away from the eruption.
C.Ludgar took proper self-rescue measures.
D.Ludgar hid in the heavily-guarded armory.
24.What's the purpose of the passage
A.To introduce the island of Martinique.
B.To inspire people to explore the Mount Pelee.
C.To provide ways to survive a volcano eruption.
D.To tell the story of a volcano eruption survivor.
【答案】21.C
22.D
23.C
24.D
Without modern Volcanology, people still sensed that something was going to happen, but they didn't have a really good sense of how big or how dangerous the threat was."
根据第三段中的"the volcano on the island of Martinique was showing signs of volcanic activity." 对应d;"Thousands of people left the countryside and came to the city of Saint Pierre." 对应a;"A pressure wave flattened every single building. Anyone who was unlucky enough to be outside was instantly burned to death. He was still badly burned and wasn't found until four days later when rescuers heard his cries."
Even so, super-hot air began to force its way underneath the door. And as his cell heated to extremely high temperatures, he was forced to take off his clothes, push them underneath the door and he peed on the clothes just to try to keep the hot air from entering."
We have all heard how plastic pollution has overflowed every corner of the world. Recently, scientists have made a surprising discovery that microplastics are even found in the human bloodstream.
After analyzing blood samples (样本) from 22 healthy people, researchers found microplastics in 17 of them! Most of the microplastics were classified as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is commonly found in drink bottles, and there were small amounts of polyethylene, which makes up plastic bags.
Although the exact chemical effects of microplastics on our bodies are unknown, it is clear that the increasing amounts of plastic in our environment could bring a risk to human cells in the future.
Microplastics were never considered a significant threat to the atmosphere until recent studies began to reveal that they could be found everywhere across the skies. For example, scientists recently discovered the presence of microplastics in the Pyrenees Mountain Range in Europe, believed to have arrived by rain or snow.
The low mass of microplastics makes them spread through air, which is why they can travel hundreds, even thousands, of miles from their source. They are also likely to spread through wastewater, oceans, and even soil.
Microplastics that are being blown and swept into the air have the potential to affect air quality and cloud formation. In fact, massive microplastics in the air could form such a kind of clouds that tend to stick around longer than naturally forming clouds.
With microplastics accumulating in the air we breathe, there is also an increasing concern that they may affect human lungs. The new study will allow scientists to better understand the impacts on human health and is a reminder of the need to find other replacements for plastic.
25.What have scientists discovered about microplastics recently
A.They are mainly made up of PET.
B.They're a major source of pollution.
C.They exist everywhere in the world.
D.They've found their way into human bodies.
26.Why is the Pyrenees Mountain Range mentioned in the fourth paragraph
A.To present a fact. B.To provide evidence.
C.To study a phenomenon. D.To introduce a topic.
27.What does the underlined word "accumulating" in the last paragraph mean
A.Becoming plentiful. B.Keeping declining.
C.Staying unchanged. D.Remaining unnoticed.
28.Where is the text probably taken from
A.A book review. B.An academic paper.
C.A scientific report. D.An environment brochure.
【答案】25.D
26.B
27.A
28.C

Recently, scientists have made a surprising discovery that microplastics are even found in the human bloodstream."
Microplastics were never considered a significant threat to the atmosphere until recent studies began to reveal that they could be found everywhere across the skies. For example, scientists recently discovered the presence of microplastics in the Pyrenees Mountain Range in Europe, believed to have arrived by rain or snow."
With microplastics accumulating in the air we breathe, there is also an increasing concern that they may affect human lungs." 故选A。
We have all heard how plastic pollution has overflowed every corner of the world. Recently, scientists have made a surprising discovery that microplastics are even found in the human bloodstream."
Some of the 17 million Americans suffering from major depressive disorder may soon receive a surprising new suggestion from their doctors: Have fun on a virtual reality (VR) device.
"Depression impacts so many people right now, and we thought VR could have a large impact," said Bullock, founder of Stanford's Neurobehavioral Clinic and Virtual Reality program. "There can be significant barriers to behavioral activation (行为激活) in some patients—they might be stuck in a hospital bed, or have no means to involve themselves in enjoyable activities like getting outside, exercising and volunteering. We started wondering whether simulated (模拟的) pleasant activities could be a good first step for them. "
The study by Bullock's team, published in JMIR Mental Health, followed 26 people with major depressive disorder. Half were told to plan and take part in real life activities like going on outings in their community or socializing with friends. The other half used a virtual reality headset to participate in activities ranging from table tennis to touring foreign cities or attending shows. After four weeks, people in both groups saw a decrease in their symptoms of depression and their depression rating by similar amounts.
"People who might otherwise have barriers to getting treatment might be open to using this technology in their own homes," said Margot Paul, a professor of mental and behavioral sciences.
Bullock believes the cost and ease of many VR platforms—especially those that have mobile phones put into cheap cardboard headsets—make it an easy treatment to promote.
The team says larger and longer-term studies are needed to find the best ways to practice virtual behavioral activation, as well as which patient populations might be best targeted with the VR treatment. They also think more efforts are needed to inform doctors about how to practice VR behavioral activation appropriately.
29.What is the benefit of using virtual reality to treat depression
A.It provides easier access to mood-lifting activities.
B.It increases public awareness regarding depression.
C.It motivates those with serious depression to get out.
D.It is more effective than taking part in real life activities.
30.What's Margot Paul's attitude towards the VR treatment
A.Unclear. B.Favorable. C.Doubtful. D.Negative.
31.What might the follow-up study focus on
A.Cutting down on the cost of VR treatment.
B.Exploring how VR lifts the patient' spirits.
C.Putting the VR treatment into practical use.
D.Encouraging doctors to adopt VR treatment.
32.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.VR—a simple tool to treat depression
B.VR—a shared world without frontiers
C.VR—a replacement for traditional drugs
D.VR—a technology taking the world by storm
【答案】29.A
30.B
31.C
32.A
There can be significant barriers to behavioral activation (行为激活) in some patients — they might be stuck in a hospital bed, or have no means to involve themselves in enjoyable activities like getting outside, exercising and volunteering. We started wondering whether simulated (模拟的) pleasant activities could be a good first step for them." Bullock believes the cost and ease of many VR platforms — especially those that have mobile phones put into cheap cardboard headsets — make it an easy treatment to promote." 故选A。

Social Media Tells Lies
Social media does have its shortcomings, and one of those is that it can often seem like everybody is living and winning big—except you.
You are constantly bombarded (轰炸) with images of people you don't even know. 33. However, the reality is that these people also go through struggles. Nobody's life is perfect all the time. Everyone experiences life's hardships, failures, disappointment, heartbreaks and pain.
Social media only shows half of what is real. Things aren't always what they appear to be. 34. But they often exist in the real-life messy moments—those ones that don't get shot or documented.
As you interact with people through the tiny screen of your mobile phone, try to take a closer look before you make up your mind that they are better than you. Everyone has their battles. Don't get caught up in the lives of other people, and don't count their blessings. 35.
Don't let social media fool you. 36. In reality, there are people with only 10 likes who have plenty of friends, and people with 1000 likes who are rather lonely, and have no real friends. Someone could have a million views on their videos and still live in poverty.
37. It takes hard work, really hard work. The real winners in life are those who work behind the scenes but make the most happen, not the ones who show off their lifestyle to impress others.
A. These images are not always telling the truth.
B. Yes, perfect moments on social media do exist.
C. They are the ones that deserve your admiration.
D. Being popular on social media is not everything.
E. Success is not what is described on social media.
F. They describe a perfect life you wish to have very much.
G. You will lose sight of your own happiness if you do that.

Mary and her parents were downstairs in the living room. Mary was looking through the windows at the endless rain outside. It had been raining non-stop for three days. She had never seen a storm this bad. It was making her nervous. The wind roared and the rain beat on the roof and windows. Dad was listening to a weather report on the radio, while Mum was putting their important documents and disaster supplies into a bag.
"Mum, Dad," said Mary suddenly, "I think we should leave here right away!" "No," said Dad. "It's too late! The radio says the city has already been flooded. " "We can drive our car through the floodwater! Let's just leave! I'm really scared!" cried Mary.
"We can't do that, honey," explained Mum, "otherwise the moving water could wash the car away!"
Mary walked to the door. She was curious to see how much water there was outside. "Don't open the door!" shouted Mum and Dad at the same time. "The water may flood in!"
Dad moved the dinner table against the door, in case the floodwater forced the door open. Mum waved to Mary to sit on the sofa. "Mary, don't worry. Everything's going to be OK," she said softly, trying her best to comfort Mary. Her voice was calm, but Mary could tell she was worried too.
Without saying a single word, Dad walked to the sofa, sat down and hugged his wife and daughter. The sudden silence in the house seemed to make the wind and rain more frightening outside. What could they do
All of a sudden, the dinner table moved and the door was forced open. Water poured in. Mary burst out crying. "Upstairs!" Dad ordered. They rushed to the second floor, only to find the whole neighborhood had been surrounded by water.

Just then they heard a helicopter (直升机) flying in the distance.
Three days later, they returned home and found their house in a mess.
One possible version:
Just then they heard a helicopter (直升机) flying in the distance. Its roar gradually grew louder, bringing a ray of hope in the midst of the chaos. Dad took out a flashlight from the disaster supplies bag, dashed to the window and shone a beam of light through the rain. Soon, the helicopter spotted them and hovered nearby, lowering down a rope ladder. Grasping the ladder firmly, Dad helped his wife and daughter climb up first. As they all were lifted into the air, they breathed a sigh of relief.
Three days later, they returned home and found their house in a mess. Muddy water had stained every inch of the once-clean space and the smell of dampness filled the whole house. A wave of sadness washed over them, but they quickly recovered themselves and set out to clean up the mess. Dad handled the mud-covered floors while Mum and Mary sorted through the damaged belongings. They were convinced that as long as they were alive and together, their home would return to its former state and everything was going to be OK.

根据第四段中的"‘People who might otherwise have barriers to getting treatment might be open to using this technology in their own homes,' said Margot Paul, a professor of mental and behavioral sciences."
The team says larger and longer-term studies are needed to find the best ways to practice virtual behavioral activation, as well as which patient populations might be best targeted with the VR treatment. They also think more efforts are needed to inform doctors about how to practice VR behavioral activation appropriately."
Some of the 17 million Americans suffering from major depressive disorder may soon receive a surprising new suggestion from their doctors: Have fun on a virtual reality (VR) device." 故选A。
