A city without cars would be very strange, right But Venice is such a city.
Venice is in the northeast of Italy. It was built on more than 118 islands.
Even so, travel isn't difficult. The waterways have always been the best way to get around. There are 177 waterways and more than 400 bridges that can guide you wherever you want to go. People in Venice move from place to place by boat.
Venice grew out of small islands in saltwater lakes when some Italians escaped from a war over 1,500 years ago, and built their homes there.
Once, people used too much underground water made the city get lower little by little. Now the city has gone down by 23 centimeters. Another problem is the rising seawater. The temperature has risen over the years. This has made the ice of the Arctic Ocean melt (融化).
Every year, high waters hit the city in autumn and winter. When a lot of water comes, more than half of the city is underwater.
Scientists are trying different ways to stop the city from getting even lower. The Italian government has asked some of Italy's biggest companies to build a project, which is planned to be built under the seawater to stop the rising. Anyway, this project is helping solve the problem.

Most scientists agree the Great Sphinx of Giza (吉萨狮身人面像) was built around 2,500 B.C. But John Anthony West says that it's much older. If he's right, everything anybody has learned about ancient civilizations (文明) would have to be completely revised.
West, a writer and film-maker, first got interested in ancient history after studying the work of a French researcher. The researcher said Egyptian civilization could have developed as early as 30,000 years ago, rather than 4,500 years ago, as most experts believe.
West joined a scientist to do research together. Their research suggested that the Sphinx had been worn down over the years by water, rather than by sand and wind.
Wait a minute. Water How could that be The Sphinx is in the Sahara Desert, which has been dry for 12,000 years! However, before that time, it was very green. If it's true that water wore down the Sphinx, West thinks that it must have been built centuries earlier.
Whether West is right or wrong, it's important to challenge accepted ideas. That's how science progresses.
West gave some advice for kids: If you are interested in a topic, read everything you can on it. Do your own research. Don't always believe everything your teachers tell you. Ask lots of questions, and find your own answers.
( )66.Most scientists believed Egyptian civilization developed .

“Sometimes students get sad...they don't see why we do the things in the class, and then they see Mr. Mabus perform and know that the work will pay off,” Rousseau told The Daily News.
Mabus began playing around the same age as the students. “To have a way to express myself after a bad day or good day, is always nice,” he said. “Music gives you a way to be expressive (表现的).”

Can you imagine what it would be like to live in boarding schools
Boarding schools in Britain are not cheap. The cost is about $25,152 for just one year. The schools are usually very old and rich in history. They play a big role in British history, and have close connections to Oxford and Cambridge universities. Students are usually very rich. Prince William and Harry both went to Eton College, a school which has produced 19 British prime ministers (首相).
One of the most important things for these schools is sport. Cricket (板球), football and rowing (赛艇运动) are played nearly every day. These games build teamwork and rules.
There is a famous saying in English, “The British Empire (帝国) was built on the playing fields of Eton.”
Boarding schools often appear in English books and films. The young child without parents growing up in a boarding school is found in hundreds of stories, although the most famous now is Harry Potter. Boarding schools are becoming less traditional, though, and more international. Nearly 9,000 foreign kids joined a British boarding school last year, and a third of them came from China.
