I was in a strange city and I didn't know the city at all, and what is worse, I could not speak a word of the language here. After having spent my first day in the town center, I decided to lose my way on my second day, since I believed that this was the simplest way of getting to know the strange city.
I got on the first bus in the morning, rode on it for several stops, then got off it and walked on. Then I decided to turn back to my hotel for lunch. After walking for some time, I thought I had better ask the way. The trouble was that the only word I knew of the language was the name of the street in which I lived and even that I pronounced it badly.
I stopped to ask a newspaper-seller. He smiled and handed me a newspaper. I shook my head and repeated the name of the street and he put the paper into my hands. The next person I asked was a policeman. There was a strange look in his eyes as he pointed left and right and left again. I thanked him politely and began walking in the direction he pointed.

For years I went to school by bus, so I met many “familiar” strangers. We took the same bus but didn't know each other's names. I used to think it was impossible for us to be true friends. How wrong I was! Smiles from the “nameless” people have changed my thoughts.
The first time on the bus, I saw different faces. As days went on, we chatted like old friends.
But I felt it a pity that I was unable to set up the same friendship with a silent girl in the front of the bus. Her old clothing suggested that she didn't have much money, but she always took a cup of water for the driver. I guessed she was a kind girl. But why did she sit in silence instead of talking with us Why did she never reply to our friendly greetings Couldn't she smile
Then, one evening, I got the answer. I walked to the park nearby and found the girl sitting alone under a tree, lonely and sad. I greeted her with the same warm smile that I had shown to her all these months, but this time her face turned red, then a shy smile appeared. As soon as she began her first words, I understood why she hadn't spoken to us before. Talking was hard for her.
I heard her story: her parents worked hard somewhere. She lived with her disabled grandparents. She said, “I can't express myself very well. Most of the time, I can't say what I want to say. I have no friends but...you always smile to me like an angel...so I also want to smile.” That evening, we exchanged our names and we said goodbye like old friends.

D
Almost everyone wants to behave in good manners. But what are the basic ingredients (要素) of good manners
A strong sense of fairness is one of them. A friend once told me an experience that he had. When he was driving along a broken mountain road, the car ahead of his produced clouds of dust (尘土), and it was a long way to the nearest main road in good condition. Suddenly, the car ahead pulled off at a wider place on the road.
My friend thought there must be something wrong with the car ahead. He stopped and asked if anything was wrong. “No,” said the ahead driver. “But you've endured (忍受) my dust so far. I'll endure yours the rest of the way.”
Another ingredient is empathy (同情心). It makes a person see into the mind or heart of someone else. Recently I happened to read such a story in a book.
A man was having dinner alone, and he was trying to open a bottle. But he failed. Then he asked a waiter for help. The waiter took the bottle, turned his back and opened it without difficulty. Then the waiter closed it again and turned back. He pretended (假装) to make a great effort to open the bottle without success. Finally he took it into the kitchen and returned very soon. He told the man that he managed to open it, but only with a tool (工具).
Another ingredient is the ability to treat people alike (一视同仁). No matter who he or she is and what he or she does, everyone is worth (值得) respecting.
( )68.What does the underlined phrase “pulled off” probably mean
A.Broke. B.Stopped.
C.Jumped. D.Repeated.
( )69.Why did the driver in the car ahead stop his car
A.To have a rest. B.To ask the way.
C.To repair the car. D.To let the back car go.
( )70.What might happen to the writer's friend
A.He became angry with the ahead driver.
B.He refused to help the ahead driver.
C.He repaired the car for the ahead driver.
D.He drove ahead of the other driver the rest of the way.
( )71.Where did the writer learn about the story of opening a bottle
A.In a book. B.From a friend.
C.In the kitchen. D.From a waitress.
( )72.What's the best title of the passage
A.A bottle hard to open
B.The sense of fairness
C.Basic ingredients of good manners

One Possible Version:
It's important for us to be polite in our life. A man being polite is always popular and people are willing to help him.
Last summer, I visited my uncle in another city. One day I went out alone and couldn't find my way. When I was worried about how I could get back, I saw a man passing by. I walked up and asked politely if I could use his phone to call my uncle. To my surprise, he not only gave his phone to me, but also waited there until my uncle came to meet me. I was so moved!
In our daily life, we should be polite. For example, when we meet teachers, we should greet them. Also we should say “Thank you” when someone helps us. All in all, with polite words and acts, we can make a big difference.
