Squirrels (松鼠) are getting ready for winter. They are looking for nuts and seeds, digging holes in the ground or finding holes in trees. That's where they store the food they will need during the coming months, when the weather is cold and sometimes snowy.
Squirrels spend a lot of time in trees, which are like restaurants for them. Among their favorite things to eat are nuts and other parts of trees, like tender buds (花苞).
Squirrels may also eat corn, insects and other animals. And, as anyone who has a bird knows, squirrels love bird food!
Squirrels stay active all winter, so they need plenty of food to help keep up their energy. Squirrels tend to (趋向于) bury food underground, piece by piece. Some squirrels may gather food into piles that they put at the base of trees or bury underground.
When they need the food, squirrels use their memories and sense of smell to help them find what they buried. Sometimes, you'll even see them digging through the snow.
Squirrels make nests in trees. Some squirrels spend much of the winter in underground tunnels (地道), where it is warmer.
When spring comes, squirrels change their eating habits to new plant growth, like buds and leaves. Sometimes they forget to dig up all their buried nuts.
That's why you'll sometimes find a little tree growing in a place where neither you nor your family planted it. It must have been the squirrels.

Students from an Australian school will soon bring home more than just their homework at the end of each day. They will take their rubbish, too. Melbourne Girls' College decided to make a new rule this school year. It aims to create a zero-waste environment.
The headmaster of the school says the rule is trying to raise the consciousness (意识) of all the students. “If we can get that message through our students to their families or communities, then it's going to have a knock-on effect (撞击效应),” the headmaster said in an interview.
The school will stop using all its dustbins in classrooms and the yard. Both students and their teachers will have to take the rubbish like chip packets and juice boxes home. The rubbish that is taken home may still go to landfill (垃圾填埋场) through their home bins, but the new rule will help get families to buy fewer packaged things and reuse containers. If children bring “zero waste” lunch boxes, they will be rewarded (奖励). For example, if they use only reusable packaging, they will win prizes such as coffee cups.
According to the headmaster, the no-bins idea comes from national park guidelines, which ask visitors to take rubbish home with them. It's clear that everyone is encouraged to move towards zero waste.

I'm Grace Cortese, and I'm 16 years old. I believe I can make a difference in protecting the environment, because my science teacher, Mrs. Esby, tells us that there are many things we can do to help protect the environment if we are willing to change our habits.
Every year at my birthday party, I ask for charitable donations (慈善捐赠) instead of gifts. When I was eight, I asked my friends to donate to the National Resources Defense Council to save the polar bears. I raised almost $150. Last year, my friend, Mary, also did that. Imagine how much money we could raise to save the environment if everyone asked for charitable donations for their birthdays!
My whole school is doing things to help protect the earth, too. Our school makes a carpooling program to reduce the number of cars on the road, and we have a “Walk to School” day once a year. My science teacher, Mrs. Esby, has a “Teenie Greenies” club at lunch and she teaches a class on how to recycle after school. And we also do beach clean-up.
If you want to do something for the environment, look through the website Grades of Green. It is fond of great ideas for us to reduce, reuse and recycle waste, and it also has a lot of really interesting facts.

One Possible Version:
Environmental problems are becoming more and more serious all over the world.
With the development of the society, there are too many cars on the streets in our city. Cars have made the air unhealthy for people to breathe. Black smoke is given off by factories. Factories also put waste into the river. And wherever we go, we can find rubbish.
Now more and more people have realized these problems. I think that government should close down the factories and make laws to stop people from driving cars every day. I suggest everyone in our country should help to clean up the rivers and the streets. We should ask the people in the town to throw rubbish in the dustbins.
I hope the problems will be solved in the near future and our home will become better and better.
